Turmoil, rate cuts and the dollar's upcoming decline
Просмотров 27028 дней назад
There's a feeling in the markets that the US Fed left it too late to cut interest rates, which stoked recession fears. But ING's Global Head of FX Research, Chris Turner, says the FX market was likely the source of the volatility, notably the unwinding of dollar/yen positions. Now that some calm has been restored, Chris looks at how expected US rate cuts in September will affect the FX market o...
Has the Fed overcooked the interest rate cycle?
Просмотров 3928 дней назад
FX markets have seen a volatile summer as fears have grown over a sharper US slowdown. Has the Federal Reserve kept rates too high for too long? We continue to look for a soft landing in the US and weak recoveries in Europe and Asia, says ING's Chris Turner
Bank of England set to press on with further rate cuts in 2024
Просмотров 194Месяц назад
The Bank of England has cut rates for the first time in over four years but is choosing to stay tight-lipped on expectations for future easing. We think better news on services inflation and wage growth can unlock one, or more likely two rate cuts by year-end, says ING's James Smith
Why we think the Federal Reserve will hold out for a September rate cut
Просмотров 298Месяц назад
Recent US data releases may be giving policymakers greater confidence that inflation is moving steadily along the right path, but we still think September will be the turning point for the Fed's road to rate cuts. Here, ING's James Knightley shares his thoughts as to why - and everything he thinks we should be expecting this week from the central bank.
Why the global economy needs a half-time pep talk

Просмотров 1682 месяца назад
Talks between China and the European Union continue as trade tensions mount. Electric vehicles are in focus; the EU thinks they're being unfairly subsidised. China's hitting back with 'unfair trade' accusations. So, what is going on? And how might this end? We get the views from our economists in Germany and Hong Kong.

Just when will the Bank of England cut interest rates? It's August for us here at ING, although others think it'll be much later. Our James Smith says that although inflation is back to target, there are still some concerns. Elections in the UK and France also complicate the picture regarding the value of the pound.
3 things the Fed needs to see before it starts cutting rates
Просмотров 2002 месяца назад
We're still looking for US interest rate cuts from September. The Federal Reserve doesn't want to cause a recession if it can help it and if the data allows it to start making monetary policy less restrictive, they'll likely take that opportunity. But, as ING's James Knightley explains, they need to see progress on inflation, the labour market and consumer spending.

The US consumer is what drives the US economy. But we're starting to see a few cracks in what could be a weakening story here - and this will be an area to watch as the wider economy slows through the second half of this year, says ING's James Knightley
