She makes a valid point that we need to be intentional in how we learn of different races and cultures. I would add that the learning has to be broad and not fixated on one dynamic of a people group. There are nearly 50 million black people in the US alone, however, the narrative of black focuses only on a few perspectives. Although there are many similarities that we share with each other as black people, TV, movies, books and music tend to paint a picture that ALL black people have the same experience. The fall out of someone who only learns about black culture through a narrow lens is their perception becomes skewed to whatever narrative they consume. Because Hip-hop and entertainment mediums are the primary sources people who are not black consume, stereotypes of black people are hardened. On the flip side, others who wish to be "allies" to the struggles of some black people, inadvertently assume that black people require their rescue. Some people watch a show or movie and then believe they have a solid understanding of black people, but they've only learned one type of black experience. All this to say, if you are going to be intentional about growing empathy and understanding of another culture, you must not only be intentional on the content you consume, but be intentional in broadening the scope of content you consume. For those who are able to build relationships with people who are different from you, be willing to listen with the intent to understand and not respond.
