At the End of the Earth | An Ode to Scotland
Просмотров 899Год назад
Last August I made the tough decision to leave Scotland after three amazing years. I had one last week between jobs, to fit in as much of Scotland as I could, so I headed up to the Highlands for a week of hiking and adventure. It didn't all go to plan, but it ended up being the most Scottish experience I could've imagined. Key locations: * (Start of) the Cape Wrath Trail - Knoydart variant from...

Riding East - Cycle Touring New Zealand's East Cape
Hey Matt, long time no speak! Just wanted to say I loved this. What an awesome adventure. Really love your work mate (big fan of DAWN TILL DUSK). As someone who does photography and videography for work, this really gives me the bit between the teeth to take the time to do something outside of that for myself on a subject I'm passionate about. This looks like a lot of fun! Keep it up! Looking forward to seeing what you get up to next. Cheers Stu
Pal, absolute respect to you. What an achievement. Respect.
Amazing Matt and Josh! Super inspirational!
GG guys and everyone involved! Thanks, helps a lot!
Very cool dude! I was on the PCT in 2020 :) Glad I found this because I hadn't heard of this trail! I've done the big 3 in the US, and did Oban to St Andrew, and the Fife Coastal Way, and from Dunbar to Edinburgh. I wanted to do a N/S route because Scotland is just amazing. Btw, last year I did the TA. Your sandflies are friggin TERRIBLE!!! Heading back in the spring to do 2 more Irish trails and then hike Wales, and if I have time perhaps head up and finish the John Muir Way.. Congrats! and get some Darn Tough socks! haha
Haha unreal
Definitely some unreal memories there!
What an epic day out! And such a brilliant film. Your wee synopsis is bang on the money. Very well done boys and thanks so much for sharing.
Cheers Nick, glad you liked it! It was definitely a very special out for a number of reasons, and I'm glad we were able to capture and share it.
Well done, guys. No-one should underestimate what a feat that is. I supported an old friend (Gerry Orchard) on his successful attempt in 1988. He saved a bit of time by going up Broad Stand (suitably roped) rather via than Lords Rake. I ran with him from the top of Scafell to the top of Yewbarrow and it bloody nearly killed me. I realised then that anyone who does the full round is superhuman.
Cheers Mr Historian that's very kind, especially from someone who has a flavour for how tough the route is! Great that your friend was successful in 1988 - I'm sure there was a lot less info out there back then. I haven't been up Broad Stand but would love to give it a go.
Huge effort! Just going up Taranaki or Fanthams Peak was hard enough for me. Your love of this beautiful place shines out!
Yeah it was a pretty big day out Chris! The summit or Fanthams are both big climbs, never easy. Glad you liked the film, and yup I'm a pretty big fan of Taranaki haha. Sounds like you make the most of it.
Congratulations
Thanks @@amrunning1301!
Amazing effort Team Girvan!! I love the Maunga for a good vert session but you've inspired some new routes!
Cheers @KaitiakiEnduranceSports ! Yeah no shortage of vert up there... Carrington Ridge is a real adventure, good practice for really rough terrain!
Yeah the bros! Good job censoring your nipples at the end Matt
@@Stomperproductions can't just give away gold dust like that for free!
Fantastic stuff Matt, and a great idea for an adventure!
Thanks @WestieRunner , sometimes you've gotta make your own fun right?! Hope you're resting up well!
@@MattGirvanNZ I buried myself in Leg 5 to make sure I made it in well under 24 hours so I was a hot mess by the time I got to the Moot Hall. Everything seems to be getting back to normal though and I can now walk up and down stairs again!
That's the way @WestieRunner , can't leave anything to chance after all that effort. Glad you're recovering well, tackling the stairs already!
So good bro
@fastasdoublekicks Cheers dude, sounds like you're in good company in Welly!
Nice one!
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
What a great idea for a day out! I’m originally from Hawera and remember fondly a childhood in a part of the world offering such wonderful outdoor opportunities. Only wish I’d made more of them at the time. Whilst I’ve spent most of my adult life in the UK I returned earlier this year for 3 months tramping and will do more when I return again in November for 3-4 months. Just a question regarding the track from Syme Hut to the summit: I planned to take this route in Feb and overnighted at the hut. A beautifully warm and sunny day followed but the wind…I’ve never experienced anything like it! I was literally blown along the ground in the flat area near the hut, and certainly any thoughts of summiting were gone. It looks pretty sketchy and as you say the scree makes for hard work but is it reasonably possible to follow, assuming good conditions? Great video and thanks for making the effort to record the occasion! You were fortunate in having such an enthusiastic support crew too, aw well as good weather!
BTW BGR 695 (although the record shows me as 10 years older than I really was!)
Wow sounds like we've got a fair bit in common Jeff! Yeah how lucky were we to grow up in a place like that... I also feel like I didn't really make the most of it until my later teenage years, and only fully appreciate it now that it isn't just on my back doorstep. Yeah the conditions up there can be crazy... Though as you can see we got incredibly lucky for our run. The route from Syme Hut to the summit isn't too bad in clear conditions - there are good patches of solid rock higher up, and the only way is up... But it isn't too well marked so can help to have a GPS route. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Enjoy your big trip in November, and congrats on the BGR!
Shout-out to the real star of the show - Taranaki Maunga (Mount Taranaki) ⛰
Taranaki Maunga (Mount Taranaki) is definitely the star of the show!
Dammit. You lucky men 💪 good on you for showing us what ya got.
@codyokriv6942 we're lucky alright... Cheers for the comment!
Incredible! Looks so beautiful. Well done.
Thanks! Yeah the scenery on this trip was incredible - hard to get bored when Scotland's throwing all that at you!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
🙏🙏🙏
Felicidades!
Muchas gracias!
Astonishing feat, what amazes me the most is the demonstrated grit to not quit despite all that physical hardship along the way. Cannot agree though that It was self-supported since you bought food, slept on hotels etc. I would have done the same thought. The greatest moments to treat yourself to dine fine is after exhausting adventures.
Thanks for the kind words, there were some tough moments but it was an amazing trip overall. So many good memories! Yeah the definitions of 'support' (as used in the FKT community) aren't the most intuitive and get a bit technical/geeky... 'Self-supported' doesn't mean no support, it just means you can use any unplanned resources that are available to every hiker/runner. What you're thinking of we'd call 'unsupported', meaning you're carrying everything you need for the whole journey (so not really do-able for a two week trip). And agreed, those town meals always taste phenomenal after a long day on the trails!
Congratulations on your achievement, really enjoyed your story!
Thanks so much, glad you liked the journey!
Good work for keeping moving forward fellas. Really enjoyed video thanks.
Thanks for the comment. Sometimes one foot in front of the other is all you can do, and all that's required.
Great film every win a victory in running these distances well done
Glad you liked it! Too right, and this one was pretty hard-earnt.
Great job guys
Thanks mate, such an amazing adventure.
legends!
Cheers, such a legendary route!
Nice! Well done 👏
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Bloody epic. What was your training like leading up to this? Weekly mileage and elevation? Amazing achievement, especially when you’ve only been to the area once. Wow!
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the journey! My training was variable but generally a good few months of ~100 km weeks and 2000-3000 metres of vert. Lots of long runs in the hills, fastpacking weekends etc as I was focused on my Scottish National Trail trip only a few weeks later. There's a bit more detail in my blog for that trip if you're interested, link below. I think the boys down in London struggled a bit more with finding enough hills! stubbornlyoptimisticmatt.wordpress.com/2020/12/28/scottish-national-trail-trip-report-2/
Outstanding. I’ll have a read of that. Again, congratulations, amazing achievement
Thanks @@ryanglynn7080, appreciate it!
Subbed brother ...awesome slaying of the Dragon ... great vid and tune
Cheers buddy, such an epic adventure!
Well done Matt, good trail vid 👍 I did the EHW a couple of years ago and my own set of videos. Just subbed 👍 Justin
Hi Justin, glad you liked the video and thanks for letting me know! Hope you enjoyed your own adventure on the EHW 🙂
Looks amazing, how many kilometers is it ?
It's 380 km total, ranging from 49 to 70 km per day. It's truly an incredible event I'd highly recommend it!
How excellent. Well done. Best video I have seen on actually doing the round. Brought back lots of the emotions. It felt so real again, even after 12 years. #1707
Cheers, glad it brought back some memories (both highs and lows no doubt). It's one hell of a run, not something you or I will forget in a hurry. A fair few more completions since yours 12 years ago... Congrats!
Good effort and well done 👍🏻
Awesome fellas. A pleasure to watch that!!
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it!
Well done.
Seriously underrated video. As a Scottish lad who got into hiking in New Zealand and now living in Australia, this is always a great wee video to stick on waiting on my trip home next year.
Thanks mate this means so much! Glad it can bring you good memories of home.
So good Matt. I love seeing snippets of your adventures. It feels like living!
Glad you liked it buddy! It makes me homesick for Scotland in a way, now that I'm down in London. Hope you're doing well!
Huge round on heart felt applause to you Sir!
Beautifully done, you’ve got a real talent!
Too kind, thank you!!
i moved to tasmania a few years ago (born in nz) and have also lived in edinburgh, so mate, i entirely get it and why some of us like to live at the edge of wilderness. great videos, all.
In the words of Scarborough FC ‘No battle no victory’. Well done Marvellous effort That bit up Fairfield is a gruelling
Love that motto, I'll have to remember that one! Thanks mate, yep the BGR has a reputation for a reason!
Got to go find this vid! Just subbed bro
Great effort 👏🏻. Although, I think you meant to write “famous” club! It’s certainly not an infamous one 😉
Wonderful Matt That was an incredible trip
Nice man
Excellent. I have travelled round the World, but Scotland remains my favourite country of all.
What an absolutely brilliant, brilliant video. Incredible achievement and excellently filmed. Very inspiring 👍
Wow thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the film.
