The horrible power and authority of doctors back then, as well as men over women: There was an episode of This American Life about two infants accidentally switched in the hospital and sent home with the wrong family. The mom KNEW this was not her baby, but her husband told her, to paraphrase, "Now honey, we don't want to insult the doctor now, do we? We can't go back and tell him he made a ridiculous mistake! You could be wrong, this is probably our baby, just raise this one." And she did! All thanks to the "authority" granted to the men around her.

This mother threw her child away. She put her in a place like that and hardly ever checked on her, and now she is complaining that got pregnant. If she had done her part as a mother and been there for her daughter, it probable wouldn’t have happened. Because she would have been checking on her.

I have Moderate Intellectual Disability myself I have had my Disability since I was born I had my umbilical Cord Wrapped around my neck 3 times when my mother kept trying to push me out the midwives told her to stop pushing and she wasn't listening to them as she was pushing the doctor and midwives told her if you don't stop pushing your baby out she's going to die she has the umbilical cord around her neck but she still wouldn't listen to them the doctor said to my mum we need to rush you to operating room to have C-Section if we don't get your baby out we are going to loose her they had no time to waste I was dying in my mother's womb they didn't know what they were about to deal with or how much the cord was around my neck untill they opened up my mum to get me out the umbilical cord was so tight around my neck that when I was free from I died twice in the doctors arms I was blue they were loosing me fast I was cut in my right cheek on the face because they were doing everything they could to save my life I will have my intellectual disability for the rest of my life I am now a 35 year old woman and I struggle with it I can do all the normal things like look after myself I can cook clean walk when I tell people about my disability they say where I don't see it and I say to them well you can't see it because it's not a Physical disability it's inside my body it's self it really frustrates me I have been bullied about having a disability by others because they don't understand what it's like for people who struggle every single day just to live in the world without getting judged and point fingers and be rude and mean at we deserve to be heard like other's that don't have a disability accepting people for who they are not for what they look like or what they wear disability or non-disability we are all human

People with disabilities obviously thrive with more support. If a group home has a 2 to 10 ratio (or worse), the support won't be as good as with a 2:1 ratio, as it was when Jill returned home.

So after mom and sister visited her and noticed she was pregnant, they just left, went home, and didn't come back for a year?? The time to kick up a fuss was THEN. Why didn't they? Not days or even weeks later but don't come back for another YEAR after suspecting sexual abuse??

No one has the right to judge these people! I can't imagine all the different issues that went into the decisions made and the family dynamics etc. And I don't know what kind of care home she was in but all state funded facilities are understaffed by over worked and sometimes vastly under qualified people and most just have to do as they're told or they're fired. Something tells me that in places where the employees make a livable wage with decent hours etc the treatment is much much better. I'm not excusing her treatment and the rape is a completely different issue but I can understand why it happens (not the rape). The physical violent assault is inexcusable and criminal and everyone involved in covering it up as well as the perpetrator needs to be brought to justice. It's good to see she was able to reunite with her Mom and sister. I wish them all the best.

Those institutions they do whatever they want to do My grandmother had dementia we put her in one for a while they have her on so many different medications We ended up bringing her home Because the place was horrible We had a nurse come in To our house go through all the drugs she was taking the nurse took away about 95% of the drugs She was happier Don't ever put your loved ones into places like that Unless you don't care about them then go ahead
