Who finds fossil bones at Ravenscar? I do!
Ravenscar is known as a tough place to fossil hunt due to how hard it is to get to the site, but once there is a fantastic place full of rare Jurassic fossils for the Yorkshire coast. Usually this means the ammonites, but today we go adventuring and find more than just ammonites, plus major news from my personal life!

Summer Fossil Hunting in Sandsend
Просмотров 37121 день назад
I had my first hunt at Sandsend in quite a while earlier this summer. I head down to hunt for Harpoceras ammonites that are more commonly found here than elsewhere on the Whitby coast. Are there going to be any fossils left on the coast with all the summer tourists enjoying the sunshine? Come along and find out. I apologise for the delay in posting this video, my personal life has been very busy!

I can't help myself with this place... back again for another fossil hunt! Ravenscar is home to a diversity of ammonites, and a collection of rare species found nowhere else on the Yorkshire coast. Today I am hunting a Haugia having had a lot of disappointingly incomplete examples of this rare genus/species. Come along and enjoy the hunt!

My favourite spot on the coast for hunting as we always get a diversity of cool Jurassic aged (180 million year old -ish) fossils including ammonites, belemnites and bones. This time with some finds shown on the beach and after some quick preparation at home.

Another rare ammonite from the uppermost Lias of Yorkshire, exposed only at Ravenscar. When I found the specimen I thought it looked a bit like a Hildoceras with the unusual keel, but quickly realised I was wrong. It turns out that it's a rare Podagrosites, which rarely preserve their middles. Prep - Mark Smith - yorkshirefossils.net ID - Neil Trudgill 3D model - skfb.ly/oYvHP

I think most fossil hunters have love/hate relations with the coast paths in and out. Very few are nice gently paths especially after a lot of walking and a bag full of rocks on a successful hunt. The path up by Runswick is brutal but at least there are some nicely placed benches to help out. If you found devil's toe nails at Ravenscar I'd be surprised. Usually from the Lower and Middle Lias stuff from near Robin Hoods Bay or up north. That being said, if you were in RHB you definitely might have found an Amaltheus - usually distinct as they have a keel that looks a little like a rope with a series of small constrictions rather than a single smooth keel.

Awesome video!! How would one best get to ravenscar? I prefer to avoid ticks but does that mean you have to walk around a lot or is there another good way to get to the beach? I’m going on a fossil hunting vacation tomorrow and want to go to the best spots. Port Mulgrave I’ve also got on my list! 😄

    • @dinoskool
      @dinoskool Месяц назад

Ravenscar is probably one of the hardest spots to get to due to the height of the cliff. This also protects it from a lot of casual fossiling meaning the finds can be good. At the minute, you can follow the path pretty much straight down to shore where the seals haul out on the headland. From there, cut along the shoreline to get to the main fossil hunting sections thus avoiding the ticks. This route isn't possible in winter as the seals haul out in different areas and have pups in some of the bays you have to cross. It's a tough old time with lots of clambering and slippery rocks there and back as well as then having to get back up the cliff with hopefully a bag of rocks. I would not recommend if you are not fit or experienced with fossiling on this bit of coast as it will not be as rewarding as other beaches will be. Definitely do Port first and see how you find that!

Got some lovely finds there and ended up not going to ravenscar, but this time I’m too curious what I could find there. But will definitely go to port Mulgrave first to get a taste of it again before heading to ravenscar. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure out the route when I get there. The path you mentioned, is that just straight up where you put ravenscar into google maps and then you follow the route down? Or is it more complicated to find the path down to shore? I think I see a path down to south cheek but idk if that’s the right path to take to avoid the ticks Thanks again!

I think it'll be left as is for the moment as it's my only decent Harpo in my collection. Maybe down the line, but I love how it looks presently

Pretty sure it is. Think almost all the big ones in my collection are lusitanicum rather than the somewhat rarer bifrons

Nice! I have 75 genuses of ammonite represented in my collection but that's one I hadn't even heard of, let alone own. A quick Google shows most of them are coming out of France.

There's a fair few genera from Ravenscar that I'd never heard of until I found one and needed an ID. The uppermost layers there are eroded across the rest of the Yorkshire coast and so we don't see the ammonites elsewhere on our coast. Neil Trudgill is writing a book up on the upper lias of Yorkshire and suggests there might be 4 species of this genus in Yorkshire but tough to know with preservation not being great in many of them.

@@dinoskool thanks for the extra info, I'll look up the book once it's released.

In my opinion your top of the tree at the minute for finds on the Yorkshire coast, what a find and very rare, love the possible predation to go with that ammonite it makes it even more interesting. I'll look into this species more when I get time. I'd like to say I can't wait to find one but that probably wil l never happen 😢 great find and identification mate was well worth the wait 👍⚒️😃

Very kind for saying it. I know there are a lot more incredible finds people have, sadly most of us will never see their collections. I'm out again today hoping to add to the list of rare things, as well as dropping off/picking up a few more rarities for prep 😅

A few more goodies today, and one that might be super rare again but may not have a middle. We await prep to know for sure! My fossil email is arcuff@outlook.com if you want to drop me any pics for me to admire.
