Photolab 7 & Nik 7 - Start to finish edit of aurora australis
This is aurora australis aka the southern lights taken last Saturday (May 2024) from the South Island NZ. In the video I walk through how I went about my edit using DxO Photolab 7 to start and Nik Collection 7 to add some panache. I have been a long time user of Nik, but with this most recent release have had my enthusiasm boosted. There are so many improvements that I have been loving. If you haven't tried it in a while, grab a 30 day demo and try it out for yourself (link below).

Control points in Nik Collection 7... I missed somethig important
Просмотров 1 тыс.2 месяца назад
As it turns out I didn't need to whinge about the control point handles on my image. Thanks to a couple of kind viewers I have now had my eyes opened to the fact that I could have hid them. One viewer also asked why I didn't do a luminosity mask rather than a series of control points. I decided to take a look at that and in the end I would stick with the control points for this particular edit....

Everything I know about cropping in DxO Photolab 7. Did you know them all?

I know this isn't a flashy topic, but I think it might be useful. This is everything I know about the crop tool. I think lots of people could find some value in this one - right from beginners to people who have been with Photolab for a while. If you know anything that I don't - please do add it to the comments. I am always there to learn new things myself. Don't forget the 2023 Black Friday sa...

I pulled this video down for a bit. I published it as the 20th started in NZ which is of course well before it starts elsewhere. By the time this goes back up it will be midnight in New York and fingers crossed that will be a more appropriate time. Sorry to those who watched it early and were frustrated at no sale yet. Just the sort of Nerd that makes the world go around. We need more people like you.
I wish you could make presets on the local adjustment brush 😢
Really great thanks! Would you recommend buying the film pack package? I'm not really into old film simulations, while I love some classic ones. But the package seems to add some interesting options on Photolab (fine contrast, split toning, vignette effect, etc). Do you think it's worth it?
I am happy with NIK 6 the upgrading too expensive
Fair enough. Nik 6 is also awesome. For me the new features are more than worth it... But if 6 does everything you need them fair enough. 😊
This is still so slow and clunky. With Lightroom, hit “c” for crop, and “x” to flip the crop orientation. 😕
No doubt there are some improvements that could be made. X to swap orientation does sound quick. But I recently did a personal deep dive because I have been doing some higher volume situations where I am delivering 200-300 images per event... So I explored other tools including looking for AI auto crop options and just cropping in other tools in general... In the end I am back to doing it in photolab. With my current approach, I was far faster in photolab (and really wasn't happy with the ai result) . But milage always varies with software doesn't it? I often say, use what you love... And love what you use. :)
@@dxflow3271 I did an event this Saturday with 400 delivered. DxO's auto-straightening worked about 80% of the time. I sent all the photos back into Lightroom (as TIFFs) for final cropping (plus exposure and white balance tweaks).
Question.. How does the noise reduction in DXO Photolab 7 Elite stand up to Topaz's Noise AI?
I haven't done a comparison with topaz in a long time. My personal take away from comparisons I have done is that dxo is best while keeping it looking natural. Some others sometimes appear to have some another sections but then look a little plastic... Or painted to my eye. Or that they mess up the transition from in focus to out of focus. But always best to try for yourself... And see how it fits with your taste.
I tried to upgrade to Nik Collection 7 from Nik Collection 5 and was told that I have to pay full price. When I reached out to the DxO representative, I was told that they could be charging me "$79 for upgrade from v5 to v6 and $89 from v6 to v7, so, instead of charging you individually to upgrade we charge the $159 new price" . Isn't that like saying if I upgrade from iPhone 13 to iPhone 15, Apple should charge me for Apple 14 as well. Too frequent upgrades with minor changes and I have to pay full price for each upgrade. No, Thank you.
Thats strange because with dxo products you usually get an discount if you are 2 versions between.
Great
Thanks
I have to agree, the more I use Nik 7 the more I like it. However, with the move of Viveza tools into Colorefex I think that the writing is on the wall for Viveza as a separate tool, I just never use it now. Between PL and ColorEfex I can now do everything that I used to use Viveza for.
Agreed. I cannot imagine going to Viveza now. It makes me think, it might be nice to integrate all tools into color efex and silver efex. Basically bring it down to two interfaces - one for color work and one for B&W work. I personally think that might work from a workflow perspective without confusing the interfaces too much. might need to increase the max effects stack in that case. I have never maxed it out myself, but looking at the support pages recently I see it is currently 15
Great video! I have been doing something similar but this adds a few more steps toward a better result. Thanks. I, too, miss the one button method in LR, along with a bunch of other features but will never go back.
Yeah... one of those little features that is nice to have, isn't it. I don't miss it that much, but I would use it in Photolab if it was there for sure. I haven't really used Lightroom (more than in passing) in about 10 years. I confess it is not that bad now, but I don't enjoy using it - just purely from a 'how does it feel' perspective.
It is good to reuse existing camera profiles from Adobe, but among your images i see colorchecker passport, which allows to create individual color profiles for your specific camera and lens combo. DxO PhotoLab can create camera profile using Datacolor Checker color palette. You just need to make a photo of this palette and DxO PL will use it to create profile. Looking on your pictures I was thinking that there is possibly to X-Right Colorchecker in the same was as it is possible with Datacolor, but not, you were not offered such :-). Of course it is possible to create camera profile using separate software from X-Right and use it with DxO PL.
Yes. This video was in response to someone asking if there were camera profiles for Photolab like the ones in Lightroom. I did the video to say, "No... but..." I do in fact create profiles for use in Photolab. In the past I had to create them in other other software and then import them... but in Photolab 7 they introduced (maybe only in elite) the ability to create them right in Photolab with a built in tool. That one I use all the time with portrait work to ensure the best starting point. Cheers and thanks for watching.
Thank you for your videos. Have converted pretty much to DXO photolab for all my raw processing and just upgraded my nik from 6 to 7. Like the control point changes and the ease now to move to different apps in nik
Great to hear! I sure think it is the best out there :) Thanks for watching!
A luminosity mask will certainly work, but it doesn't give you the flexibility that a control point offers. Personally, I liked the way you "faded" out the color as the pools of light receded. Thanks for the tip about hiding those handles. I, too, always have problems grabbing ahold of them.
Yeah me too (on the fading out) and, yes, I am so happy to have found that tip to turn off handles.
excellent ! thank you to your subscriber for helping us all. I enjoy these videos
Glad you like them!
New to me.
handy though, right?
Purchase Nik 6 less than 60 days ago and just assumed they would provide updates to Nik 7 , boy was I wrong . Reached out to DXO and was told I had to pay for the update , ZERO consideration was given at all . As a long time user of their products this will be the end of the road for me . IMHO this is simply a money grab by DXO , so much for customer retention
Agree. That does feel rough. I have been there with other software in the past. At this point the yearly cycle is such a common thing, I always google when the next version is set to drop before I buy anything.
I do agree with you that Nik Collection is so fun to use, and you could really unleash your creativity. I still have not bought it yet, but i do have the free trial install to try it, but i do own Nik Collection 6. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video 📹 😊 ❤️
Thank's for watching. Hope you are having fun with it.
Thank you for this nice and informative video and DxO do keep up the good work (just finished upgrading my NC6 to NC7.)
Nice!
well done - I just purchased this collection. Your video helped my learning curve. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great, all your photos are very nice. 7 megapixels and good glass is a lot from a good artist for good art photography, so 3 megapixels can be good. I know that hardly anyone uses those photo cameras, but I would like to say that every photo camera is good if you know how to handle it and look for what is important. Thank you.
Totally agree!
Robin use the Shift "E" to hide the handles when using a control point. Or the little menu icon next to the local adjustment type picker.
Thanks for that. Just put out a short video sharing this tip with others. So good to know. :)
I'm really enjoying using the new Nik tools. You do realize that you can turn off the on-screen controls if you want to? ( the little icon beside the question mark. I prefer them but I know some, like you, don't) Also instead of all those control points did you consider using the new luminosity mask feature, I'm finding it really useful. Finally, have you noticed that you can place "negative" control points by holding down Alt as you position them? It looked like they'd removed that feature but they've just made it an "Alt" operation instead.
Thanks for that. I just did another video to share this great tip. In that same video I had a look at using luminosity mask instead. At first I thought there would be no difference, but in working it, I realised that I had set the different points to different opacity... so the luminosity mask didn't 100% duplicate my intent... but it was close.
Thanks! Great new additions to Nik. We must share the same size of hands/gloves: Tried them all, OnOne, C1, AlienSkin Exposure, Luminar to name a few and don't use them anymore. Staying with the basics Lr, PS and favorite Nik I bought back in 2012 when it was really expensive. After Nik's "dark years" when owned by Google, I'm glad that DxO now takes care of this excellent bundle.
Agreed. Thanks for watching.
Gives me something to think about. Nice to see a fellow actor/photographer. Not too many of us. Good luck with Tempest.
Cheers for that :)
This was helpful. Now I understand what is in NIK 7.
Glad it helped :)
Only bought NIK 6 3 weeks ago so no update for me
I don't know what the result will be, but if I were you I might try contacting support to see if there is anything they can do about that. I always find it never hurts to ask.
@@dxflow3271 thanks it worked got a good reduction on price
Thank you for this wonderful video, and I really enjoyed it watching it..❤🎉❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another update that has minimal upgrades and we have to pay for the upgrade. Version 6 was released not that long ago and to be fair that was a good upgrade but this is nut's! No upgrade for me thanks! I understand that some of the new bits are good but they should have just been given to us as there’s not much that’s new, well certainly not enough to pay out a lump more money.
Fair enough. From my perspective this is one of the biggest/best they have ever done. But if they are not changes that matter to you, I can totally understand. No sense spending money for features you don't need.
Luminar neo is worth having just for the power line removal tool. That's all i use it for (as a plug-in)
Fair enough. I generally use Photoshop for that aspect... but agree it is a good feature to have.
You shouldn't need to click "crop" at all in a non destructive photo editor... And crop needs a shortcut to engage and disengage crop mode at any point in the editing process... So it goes for every top bar editing mode.
It is curious that there is no hot key for that, huh?
Love the image handling and demosaiking on DxO, but boy is it the opposite of quick to edit... Especially crop.
You know, funny enough, I was buzzing through some grad photos I did last week and had to crop about 120 images. I selected them all, and then did a basic crop (which applied to all images) - then de-selected all, and started with the first image. I could just scroll through the images and do little tweaks to each one as I went... keeping the crop too active the whole time. I have to say, it couldn't have been quicker unless I had AI doing it for me and then it probably would have taken more time because I would have to go through them all and first check and then correct any that I wasn't happy with. So I actually think with a bit of a strategic approach it is respectably fast.
Thank you for a very helpful video. I just bought PureRAW and am very impressed by what it can do even with very high ISO images. One question: does the software sharpen as well as remove noise. In other words, do you feel the need to sharpen processed images in some way? I’m asking in general and not just high ISO images.
Hi there, yes there is a feature to sharpen as well if you have a look at the settings. It is on by default to my memory... but there are some different levels of sharpening you can use depending on the image. If you will need more than that will depend on your preference and the specific image. I often don't personally, but that is just my preference.
Great video, thanks. Came here to check the rotation and at 7:50 The rotation lag seems insane. I've noticed on my machine, and was looking just to see if there is something wrong with my computer or the software, but here is also taking almost seconds to render a frame change if you want to line something up/play around with the angle its unusable.
Yeah. That isn't the smoothest is it? I generally use the horizon tool slider the most. I find it the easiest to fine tune.
How do you detach the histogram to enable you to move it onto the image?
Just grab bear the top of the histogram and pull it free. To redock, just get it near the left side of the screen and it will jump back in.
Hello Don, I'm referring to minute 17:40 ruclips.net/video/hbRp6JgPZbk/видео.html There you set the saturation slider in the HSL tool to "0" to see what exactly is selected (sky). There is an easier method: Place the mouse pointer over the blue "cake slice" in the HSL tool and press the left mouse button at the same time as the, I think 'CTRL' key. This should have the same effect. Thank you for sharing your findings with us. Your personable and calm manner make your videos a pleasure to watch. Best wishes from Austria to New Zealand! Manfred
Thanks for watching and for the kind feedback. that technique is just my habit... and also the Ctrl trick doesn't work (on windows at least) when using HSL in the local adjustment area... so it saves me forgetting and trying to use Ctrl in there.
@@dxflow3271 Hello Don, I have to apologize, I then saw in one of the videos I watched after my comment that you use this technique anyway. Yes, unfortunately it doesn't work with the local adjustments. And now I'm looking forward to your new video on Nik Collection 7! 👍 Kind regards Manfred
Sorry but is possible add and use personal camera profiles (.dcp files)?
On elite only. You can create them and apply others but I am about 99% sure it is elite only. Sorry if that is bad news.
@@dxflow3271 But in the dxo store I can't find a normal and an elite version... So what should I do? Lightroom allows me to create and use personal camera profiles, even linear ones, starting from my camera.
Well done Don, perfect pace for someone new to Photolab 7 and on the learning curve. Not exactly a simple task coming from PS, old habits still lingering but indeed finding the software very capable for my needs. That said for the life of me, after editing and exporting a photo, I cannot figure out how to close the file in the edit window. I can over ride it with a new photo, but curious how to close it (MacBook Pro) without actually shutting down Photolab. I cannot find any info out on the net but perhaps you can help (I did try the close button, bottom right, but it just minimizes the software). Thank you, I truly appreciate your content and its presentation, an invaluable learning tool. Be well Don.
There actually is no closing a file in Photolab. As a non-destructive editor it is always saving notes about your changes in a side file. If you export a file you can view that too... but it will always show what it is pointed at. So you can change to another file and it will show you that till you close the application or change to another file. I hope that makes sense.
@@dxflow3271 sure does, overtime it became clear to me the logic of the software. Still clunking along but getting better as I go, it is very capable but has its quirks. Thanks for responding, stay well!!
Great software, and I bought it. But it doesn't always boot up.
I hope that has improved. That's no good.
is it possible to read the Delta E error after colour calibration?
Not that I am aware of. Just as a note, as of more recent versions of the elite version of Photolab... you can not create the profile right in Photolab too.
@@dxflow3271 yep I'm afraid you are right I had a confirmation from the developers, to me it's a pretty big flaw for a photo editing software, darktable has it and it's free :(... About the creation of the profile in photolab yep I'm aware of that, that's at least is preatty convenient.
It not be a perfect solution but for a series or burst capture the copy and paste selected corrections (i.e. the spotting) could be applied to the set of images given the dust is sensor based. Is this correct?
I have certainly done this and it worked well for me. I feel like I would want to check them individually that the source for the heal spots were all appropriate of it was important work. I haven't done it often enough to be super confident that it works 100%
Mmmmm I have a new learning curve . Thank you .
I need to do a new video I think and take this one down. The was it works has changed in a recent update. Cheers.
@@dxflow3271 Changed for the better you think?
Really useful and I've now done the same in Affinity and recorded it as a macro there too. Fortunately, I don't get too many spots but finding them to remove them can be a pain, this makes it much easier.
Awesome idea. Thanks for watching
The curves control in Photolab is one of the crudest curves implementations in modern software. Even the free Faststone Image Viewer has a more sophisticated Curve control. Hopefully V8 will improve on the current situation.
Fingers crossed it will get some love.
thats a really cool tip, thanks! a general tip after trying this out: If you use presets, make sure your custom preset doesn´t use Retouch or else every correction you made will be deleted :D
Great point.
Not sure if this is in response to my post on the DxO PhotoLab Users Facebook page but thanks for a great video. It would be great if DxO in one of its forthcoming upgrades did include a generic dust spot remove tool. Almost all other post processing platforms have one.
Your question did spark my idea about this and I thought this topic would be something that others might be keen on too so put this together. Cheers.
@@dxflow3271 Thanks. I wonder if DxO will incorporate a dust/spot removal tool as did Capture One. You method works well but would be nice have a one click solution. Am late to DxO but so far it is the best postediting software I have worked with. Keep up the good work!
Hi Don.. love your channel thanks very much, i've been looking at the compare function lately and dont find it very intuitive, I wonder if there are some additional tips you have on usage. e.g. i notice: selecting a virtual copy and comparing to the master places the editing copy on the right hand side, more logical to me that selecting master first to compare copies, selecting some tools like white balance and local adj seem to cancel compare but not others, if some tools are selected before compare like white balance then compare becomes split screen rather than full image, not sue if this behavior is following any rules or you just need to know. Can virtual copies be compared to each other and is there any way/trick to compare different images? thanks again.
Great suggestion. I will have a look at that as a video topic. Cheers and thanks for watching.
