Top 5 Quick Release Systems for Cameras and Accessories
I'm a true believer in quick release systems, but I wasn't always. Here's my top 5. Number one is a joke kind of. Actually if it was a joke why did I talk for so long about it?

Custom Button Hacks | Canon C80/C70
Просмотров 658Месяц назад
EDIT: a viewer pointed out that at 5:00 where I talk about base iso switching that the mode I couldn’t figure out was the auto base ISO switching mode. I've been working on these custom buttons for 4 years. Now that the Canon C80 is out it was relatively easy for me to update this list of changes to the assignable buttons. Most of these are still applicable to the C70 too. Website: inthecarmedi...
Canon C400/C80 | The Level Bar
Просмотров 499Месяц назад
The gyroscope used in the Canon C400 and C80 gives us new features that are a first for Canon. The level feature is incredibly useful (I'll never turn it off) but very difficult to find in the menus. SFX - Soundstripe. Music - Artlist 0:00 - Intro 0:07 - Custom Display 1 0:56 - Fine tuning

love your personality! subbed :) looking forward more content!
Thanks David--this was very helpful! On the C400 under System Setup (Wrench) it is submenu #10 to access Level Sensitivity.
Yeah I have no idea why some work and some don’t. It’s all a mystery to me. I think I selected that category, oddly none of them really match our industry. I play around with titles and see if that makes a difference. Sometimes I think what time of day you’re publishing makes a difference, but it all seems random to me. I just happy to get one view really 🎉
Helpful video. Thanks, David. I completely stripped down my gear for similar reasons.
@@monellifilms glad to hear it! Ironically I’ve rigged up my cameras more since I started using quick releases. I just make sure they fit in my cases ready to go.
@ yeah i’ll have to try some of your systems
This is great, it’s has me thinking about ways to make my gear more efficient. I hope it wasn’t 12:01am when your kid walked in 🤣
@@videographerstuff539 hahaha. It was at 4pm fortunately. Another way to make gear more efficient is hiring more crew who are familiar with your gear or bring their own. I find that hiring a gaffer, AC or grip each gets gear used that i wouldn’t necessarily use shooting with just a producer/director.
I’m here for the satisfying clicks as well!
Hey what “category” do you use for your videos? I’ve tried Science and Tech and Education. This video was clearly dropped immediately by the algorithm and I’m trying to figure out what went wrong besides my long-ass intro.
@@DavidEllsDPI looked today and I have mine category as ‘film & animation’
Thanks for this video! Super helpful.
Just out of curiosity: Did you consider a HDMI adapter that points "forwards" instead? I Imagine it wouldn't obscure the WFM button.
@@ScandinavianCoward yeah I tried that. Too easy to put strain on the HDMI port with it sticking out forward. Pointing backward it’s supported by the camera body.
@@DavidEllsDP That makes sense. I'm a pessimist by nature, so I deal with the extra weight of the camera cage and HDMI protector. Great info BTW.
Curious, what method are you using for storing the files? Is there a cloud service you use or are you putting on external hard drives?
@@Profshulman I use external SSDs on my Mac Studio. For immediate backups I use a HDD and Backblaze (cloud). For archive I use couple 16TH WD HDDs.
Cool. Is this not available on the C70?
@@bobdrummondfilms5402 correct. No gyroscope.
05:40 the two button switches are actually toggling between Auto Selection and Base 800. The first click takes you to Auto selection which starts with Base 800, but you'll find if you crank your ISO up in this mode, it will switch over automatically to the next Base
@@dtang7d oh dang! That makes sense. Thanks!
I need to get that top plate
It’s the best option out right now IMO. Tilta, Bright Tangerine, and Small Rig will undoubtedly throw their hats in the ring but I’m too impatient.
@@DavidEllsDPyeah i can’t wait any longer
I’m loving your content as I just got the C80, keep it coming! 🎉
Testing Digital IS between C70/C80 has been more formidable than I thought. The C70 is really hard to bait into locking on and ruining footage. Without being able to reproduce that result reliably I can't yet share my results. I just know that the C70 does do this because it happened to me once and ruined the shot.
It’s a known issue. Even my R5c does it. Particularly when the subject takes up more of the frame. If the subject starts to move the is will try to stabilize them instead of camera movement.
@ I spent about an hour trying to get the C70 to do it again with my face really close at shallow DOF. Any more tips for bringing it out?
Can you check which firmware version you have? The C70 firmware Version 1.1.0.1 disables the "Motion Vector For Digital IS" by default: "Prevents a phenomenon that may cause the image to shake along with the subject when recording a subject (such as a person or an animal) with a large amount movement."
@@ScandinavianCoward Interesting! I don't have this update installed yet. But the fact that I can't get the IS to misbehave without it makes me wonder if a previous firmware update helped with it. I'm wondering how the C70's IS works if not with motion vector since it doesn't have a gyroscope.
Thanks for this! Now I’ll have to see if it helps or distracts me 😂
@@videographerstuff539 “standard” may still be your best bet. I’m always trying to prevent cognitive load. Since I’m paranoid that my horizon isn’t level most of the time this is a great solution to me. But I could see it being the opposite for some folks.
Great first video! Love the reel shots!
Great video! Are you 100% sure the C400 has this feature as well? I asked B&H a while ago and they told me only the C80 has an electronic level. I hope you’re right!
@@justinhofstadler6398 just double checked the C400 manual. It’s there! Also common sense says Canon wouldn’t withhold a feature from the pricier camera with the same sensor. That’s bad business.
Yep the level is definitely in there on the c400, just turned it on 😊
@@DavidEllsDP Wonderful. Thanks for the reply!
@@videographerstuff539 Thanks for checking!
got my c80 about 5 days ago.. still waiting on cage systems to be made for it
@@VonHarris I seriously considered waiting before getting the top plate but I figured that the chance of finding another solution that was compatible with the WC mini handle was slim.
Subscribed and ready to hear all you discover about the C80. Thanks for letting us all learn from you.
Thanks for sharing! Are you using v90 SD cards or do v60 work well enough?
@@Profshulman I use both. V60 cards work fine with XF-AVC at all frame rates. I’d use v90 for RAW.
@ thanks!
Whats the bp-a battery you are running and do you have much time behind it? I just got a c80 as well and need a dtap and usb-c but want them on the side versus the back so I don't get jabbed! Thanks!
@@joshpreissner565 BLUESHAPE. I recommend it with a few caveats. I’ve been using them for 4 years. 3 can get me through the day with monitor and transmitter. I got them for the same reasons as you. The USB is USB-A but easy to adapt. Downsides: -can’t power camera with dc in while these are connected -usb-a port isn’t active until you press on the back button to check battery levels -port covers break off easily
Some extra thoughts: some weird things that the C70 has which the C80 does not: -view assist in playback mode -assignable select dial (back at the bottom) Wooden Camera Top Plate: My thumb has some difficulty getting under it to access the power button. A little annoying.
Stupid question: how do you activate the level? Very helpful video.
Go to the display menu > custom display 1 > level (bar). I also upped the level sensitivity in the last menu with the gear icon to 2x.
I just bought the C70. The price dropped and became more affordable. Even with the limitations I still love it.
Yeah it’s arguably a better image than the C80 in certain high dynamic range scenarios. For me the benefits of triple base ISO, 6K oversampling and full frame tick my A cam boxes, but C70 is a dream B cam. I’ll continue to use it 30% of the time most likely.
The dummy battery adaptor looks like a game changer for weight distribution! Will have to check it out - always interested in peoples little game changing objects/accessories, so if you have any more, I'd love to see a video!
Amazing. I'm glad you said so. I'm gonna start making a list of little game-changers for video topics. Are you A C70/80 shooter as well?
@@DavidEllsDP Currently a c70/r3 shooter, at a turning point between a c400 or a Red KX as an A cam
Great video. I'm a c70 shooter as well. I've watched a lot of c80 videos and this is the first one to talk about digital IS, the gyro, and the level, which I didn't realize were featured in this camera.
I really appreciate your comment! I'd like to go more in depth in a second video. Any specifics I can cover that you'd be interested in? I want to show a side-by-side of the Digital IS but I'm unsure how to control for the variables that are inherent in shaky movement.
@@DavidEllsDP I wouldn't mind seeing a quick and dirty IS comparison even if it's not a perfect test. Maybe hand held standing still and then a walking shot with both cameras.
@@DavidEllsDPI’d love to see what settings you are using for shooting and any hacks with assignable buttons that have improved your workflow.
@ I’ll definitely do an assignable buttons video. Thanks for confirming that direction!
Thank you ! Great video you mentioned things no one else does about the c80. I ordered mine today can’t wait to start using it .
