How to Sculpt a Barbarian Miniature for D&D/TTRPGs! Hand-Crafting Miniatures from Scratch
In this video I sculpt a barbarian humanoid miniature starting from a paperclip and ending with painting/clear coating. I love barbarians, and they're so much fun to have in D&D parties. This sculpt allowed me to experiment with a bunch of new textures (fur, leather, hair, chainmail, etc.) and I had so much fun making this mini! I really feel like I'm making some solid progress, and I can't wait to see how my next minis turn out.

How to Sculpt a Bard Mini for D&D (Edgin the Bard from Honor Among Theives); how to craft miniatures

    This is not a bad idea, but it seems to me that the alternative of learning to produce these types of miniatures (and, consequently, pretty much any other 3D printable thing) with resin printing will probably prove a much more useful skill for most people. It's not prohibitively expensive these days, will generally be more detailed, and is definitely much more scaleable among other benefits.

    • @zealman18
      @zealman18 5 месяцев назад

      I would have to agree on efficiency but disagree on cost. Myself and most of my friends who play d&d live in tiny loft apartments with no spare space to set up a 3d printer, let alone ventillating it so the apartment isnt full of fumes. Rent is so high now that having sufficient space for a printer would end up being super expensive. Affordability is definitely subjective and relative.

    • @d20crafts47
      @d20crafts47 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment :) That is a totally fair point, and in fact my closest friends actually gifted me a resin printer for that exact reason 😂 However I haven’t ended up getting it set up yet because I don’t really have space to have a dedicated printing area (was going to use my basement, but now my basement floods every time it rains so the humidity probably would impact prints) and I had some concerns about the resin fumes potentially impacting my own or my cats health. I work in health care and have already seen 2 patients complain about respiratory issues related to 3D printing so I am a little cautious about it. If I had a garage I could ventilate or set up a vent tent like this one (www.asianjoyco.com/resources-tutorials/ventilation-upgrades-for-3d-resin-printing) I would totally be printing more. Plus so many of the cool STL files I really would love to print are in bundles I’d have to pay for, which is another cost I consider. But I also just enjoy the sculpting process and my D&D crew get so excited when I sculpt them minis, so thats the other big reason I do it. This is how I made miniatures long before the time of 3D printing when I was but a mere middleschooler with no income hahaha Are you into 3D printing? Do you do anything to reduce fumes/is that a concern of yours?

    • @libraryproject2007
      @libraryproject2007 5 месяцев назад

      @d20crafts47 yes, you can make a container that encloses the printer, ventilates fumes directly to the outside, and lets you use the printer in pretty much any room with an opening window. I made mine with sheets of acrylic, silicone sealant for a gasket, a couple of computer fans, and flexible duct tubing. The fans pull in air through any gaps and circulates it through the tubing directly outside. I also eventually found a casement window seal that works with the tubing. Besides that, a respirator and gloves when handling any uncured resin are always recommended.

    I won't lie, I am very much a "needs to be very detailed" sort of person, but your video and your lil peasants may have changed my mind... If I can pump out hundreds of lil guys with just a pack of FIMO, some paperclips, and spray/paint/etc, and have them look as desired/needed? Who cares if you look closer and don't see the eyelids, or jawlines, or adams apples, or the rope belt on the tunic? They look great for how little has gone towards them, financially. They're clearly peasants, and they look like them at a distance that a player would be sitting away from the board, and if all I need are those things I could make HUNDREDs of models that I need on as much as £20 (2 boxes of paper clips being £2 and the fimo 454g block being £16) Liked and subbed. :)

    Please explain the guage of wire and paperclips you use? Dental tools work really well for sculpting and come in many sizes. Especially if you can get real ones. I've not heard of the type of polymer clay you use? Will regular polymer work?

    • @d20crafts47
      @d20crafts47 7 месяцев назад

      Hello! Thanks so much for your comment :D I am honestly not sure of the paperclip gauge, but I believe the other wire used was either 22 or 24 gauge. But I am not specific with that in my own crafting, even generic floral wire works great. And thanks for the tip! Yeah I love using dental tools! For my crafting purposed, the Cosclay is great but of course any polymer clay works! I just tend not to trust the durability of the ones with no flexibility if the piece has super thin areas like ankles/wrists/fingers, etc. I hope this info helped and I hope you’ll stick around my channel to check out newer content coming soon :) Happy crafting!

    Andy, why did you pop up in my recommendations? I'm already investing a lot of time in sculpting figures as a hobby (and loving it). Now, I'm so eager to start working on miniatures.

      Hey! I’m so glad I appeared on your recommendations! I have no clue how that algorithm works but I’m glad its finally recommending the video I made 3 years ago 😅 Yeah sculpting is so much fun! I find it super relaxing. I hope you’ll stick around my channel! I’d love to get feedback on upcoming projects I’m making when I finally finish editing the videos for them! I perpetually have like 5 different projects going, so I get very distracted haha but hoping to get more content up soon! Thanks for your comment :D

    I love how hand sculpted miniatures give the game a certain feel. Keep up the good work. I would love to show you my miniatures.

      Hey! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment :D I totally agree, even my derpy looking peasant NPCs feel like they have a lot of character and it makes them more memorable to players I think. The old man I sculpted in my first peasant video was unexpectedly loved by my D&D crew and they protected him at all costs which I thought was hilarious because he was not significant to the story or anything. Yeah I’d love to see your minis! Not sure if you can private message pictures on here, but if you use snapchat I made a D20crafts one!

    great work. I love watching crafting videos, i watch a lot of videos actually. Sometimes i craft houses/builds for Dungeons and Dragons and other similar games. Altough we can buy pre-fabricated models, assemble and paint them, there is nothing like crafting from scratch by our own. My models of course are far from looking professional like those we buy, but hey, i can make whatever I want, the look I want, and most important I have fun making them. You need to make a warband of those barbarians to fight that big cat :) I know from experience cats like to invade my little villages, its always good to have a lot of miniatures to defend from a giant cat. ehehehe Keep it up :D

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I totally agree- I love the freedom of being able to make any type of miniature I want or my D&D party would like to see! I’m happy to have my minis look more DIY than professional because to me they always remind me of where I was in my life when I crafted them. I love the idea of making a warband! In my villager videos I always made several minis at a time and I hope to go more in that direction with newer builds! I have a lot of projects on the way, but I’ve had a few simultaneous setbacks that slowed my progress a bit (gas leak at home, got pretty sick for a bit, basement flooded, etc.). Hoping to be back to uploading soon, so I hope you’ll stick around!

    These are really cool! Did you dry out the clay by putting it in an oven or did you just let it dry naturally?

    • @d20crafts47
      @d20crafts47 8 месяцев назад

      Hey! Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment :D I put them in the oven and was pretty careful to keep the oven time short (less time than the directions recommended) because the clay was less than 1/4 inch thick and I thought the paperclips might heat up much faster than the clay and I thought it could scorch it. Thanks for subbing! I’m preparing my next videos now! Happy crafting my friend 👍

I’m hoping to sculpt more often and increase my upload frequency in 2024! I am grateful to have you along for the journey 🙏
