Sailing dinghy with bilge keels and tarp sail. Launch and testing.
This video covers three days of sailing and testing Willow with my son on the Tamar river in Tasmania.
Putting bilge keels on this traditional dinghy suited my purposes for a number of reasons but the outcome was difficult to predict. So far, I have found her very well balanced and sea kindly at all points of sail and for that I am pleased and very relieved. She stays on course easily and her pointing ability is better than I had hoped. She feels safe and secure even in blustery conditions. Most of all, it is very nice to be sailing again!
The tarp sail is holding up with no signs of deterioration. We have used it for twelve hours now and it is performing nicely and all the taped seams ha...

Preparing a traditional 12ft dinghy for sailing. DIY sailboat. Part 3
Просмотров 5 тыс.21 день назад
Getting Willow ready to launch as a sailboat for the first time. It has been a long and very interesting process converting this traditional row/motor boat to a sailing dinghy and soon I will get to see the results. It's a bit risky I know to take on the role of amataur marine architect but I have always had a sense of wonder about these kinds of things and basically it is just too tempting to ...
Making a polytarp sail. Easy homemade sailmaking for small boats.

*UPDATE 28/11/24 A video of this sail is now available on my channel. After 12 hours of sailing in 6-30km/h winds the sail is still in perfect condition. Here's a breakdown. 1. Determine sail dimensions (and gaff angle if making a four sided sail) 2. Enter sizes into Sailcut CAD (free download) and print out development. 3. Use development to make the sail panels by lofting out on the floor. If...
Restoring a 1940's traditional dinghy and converting it to a sailboat.

Documenting the restoration of Willow and her conversion to sail. She has been a big success as a family boat so far. Powered by outboard engine and oar, we have explored many rivers and lakes across Tasmania. The bilge keels were added ten years ago during her initial restoration. With them, she is stable in the water and sits solidly on her trailer or a beach. She easily cruises at 5 knots at...

A short cover of Dido's Thank You with my friend Emeline. 😊 This one always makes me happy to listen to and watch, hope you enjoy it too. #musiccover #dido #90smusic #collaberation #singing #cover
Have you tried swamping her to test your flotation? How about righting her after a capsize? I'm sure you're testing all of this. Looking very good mate!
Wow! This is awesome Trev. She looks like she handles amazingly. Great camera work by the 1st mate there too. I just bumped into your channel yesterday and watched Willows transformation. Great job. Looking forward to more action.
Thanks for showing your anchor solution, and for noting that there isn’t a ready solution in small boats. That affirmation is as important as showing your anchor stowage! 😉👏🏻
Thanks for watching and your comment.

Thankyou!
Tyvek.🤔 bloody spell check
Only built one them sail so far. Hot tip; run the stuff through the washing machine 4 times. Gentle cycle, no detergent! Transforms the materials behaviour for the better.✌
Haven't got my hands on some Tyvek yet but will try this if I do.Thanks for the tip 👍
I appreciate your video, thank you. 👍
Thanks for saying. 😊
love you gays❤
The last 2 comments have expressed everything I wanted to tell you. So, I am as well looking forward to seeing your next video of how your beautiful boat responds under sail. Thank you, Robert p.s. great job
Thankyou again Robert ( great name btw, same as my son). I'm looking forward to trying her out and the challenge of making a video of it. Still a few weeks till then but definitely on it's way.
Brilliant work. Also very helpful illustration of your projects. As a Scaffie owner I am struck by the similarity of the bilge keel arrangement. I look forward to seeing Willow under sail.
Thankyou very much. I think those Scaffies are a great design, must be nice to sail I imagine.
Cant wait to see her under sail... always love clean extra room from a boat without centerboard
Yeah, gotta have some space to rest. Thanks again for your comment. Should have something to show in a few weeks.
Hi i'm building a 16' sailboat off my design and and i-m very interested in a simple way of lateral resistance . Your bilge kieels might be it. Looking f.w.d to see the results in your next video. Thank'you Roberto from US
Hi Roberto, That's great to hear. I have been busy finishing off the inside of the boat ( video coming of that) and am hoping to begin some trials soon.. It will be a few weeks before I can produce a sailing video. I will try to get some data using GPS of her actual course sailing upwind, COG. I am a bit nervous about it as you can imagine. I guess I can explore other options if it doesn't work. Anyway, I will post my findings and hopefully it will be useful to you with your endevour.
Good job. All the x,y, zs and trig. put me back in school where I slept during maths class for 4 years. I made two sails out of waxed cotton like Drizabone material. Fairly heavy stuff for my 21ft and 20ft masts which are lego' mutton with sprits to push out the clew. This is on a 19x5ft Ohio Sharpie skiff. She's got a flat bottom and draws 4 in with the board up. I was worried that I made the sails a bit flat so I added a tiny bit more roach on the leach and the luff and the foot . The boat sails like a little witch but the cotton sails have bagged like nanna's old boggers.Could have sewed them with straight lines all round and they would have gotten a good little belly in them after a few sails. Unless you are sailing up near 30 deg into the wind , especially with your cute little rowboat conversion, you can pretty much make them out of anything. In the islands they use rice bags . They look shit but they sail like racers around those islands.
Thanks for your comments. It's interesting to hear about the different materials that people attempt to use. Dryzabone is a new one on me. There's a bunch of people that use Tyvek aswell. I would try that but its imposible to find in small quantities and without Tyvek written all over it. Maths wasn't my thing either haha.
Well, youve done a mighty fine job and saved her for a few more years.
Thankyou. Yeah it means a lot to me to keep this one going.
Interesting. Thank you.
Thanks!
So far the best tarp sailmaking video
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Fantastic. I'm subscribing
Thankyou. Welcome aboard! ⛵️
Interesting technique! I will ve very interested in seeing it sailing and how the sail holds up without stitching. My hunch (from making polytarp sails myself) is that the taped panel seams will be a hard point so youll get ribs in the sail there, because the tarp is quite stretchy. But, im sure it will still be a satisfying boat to sail!
Thanks for your comment. I'll be testing this sail soon (after one other video) and will give a full report of its performance and updates on its durability. I am intending to get a real sail made but until then I will use this one until it fails, as an experiment. Will keep track of hours used, any deterioration, stuff like that and post the findings. I have used this non stich method on a smaller scale before and have had good success and it held together well. Taping and stiching together is always a pain because the needle gums up, so I decided that stitching wasn't worth it and went to a stronger tape that holds very well. Yes, I know what you mean about tarp stretching. I keep the weave parallel to the highest directions of tension, but it still does. I guess, it's just a draw back of using tarp. I have found that the tape and tarp stretch together fairly evenly though so far and haven't had bad issues with that.
Fabulous. Thanks for sharing.
Thankyou!
This is such an amazing work Trevor. .. It's a dream come true❤ and with classical music, it makes it even better 😊❗🎶 well done on everything...and now I can say I am able to make a boat😂🎉😅. Bisou
May the T-Rex force be with you
All you have to do is find an old boat, give it a bit of a fix up, make some tarp sails for it in a jiffy and then sail south for the winter. Don't forget to use plenty of 🦖🦖🦖tape and don't forget to visit me when you get there. Thankyou Emeline! 🫡
I did not see you posted this masterpiece 😍😝
😄😄 people need something other than the Mona Lisa to look at.😜🤪..seriously it was a total joy to make this with you.
