For almost the entire battle the German ships were trying to close the gap with their bows pointed at the U.S. ships, thereby, limiting their fire to just there front batteries. No way would they have done that. They would have brought as many guns to bear as possible. Not very realistic but I do appreciate the effort.

Actually there were people who did indirect fire even in Bad Company 2 days. It's just not well known. Mostly on Heavy Metal map. Some people use to know how to park the tank on hill at base and hit enemy base and flags from there. I know that because i playd with some of them. It was done with a help of helicopter, drone or recon who are in contact with tank. There were alot of gadgets in BF3 and 4 that allowed very creative use but players mostly ignored them. IMO it was a mistake BF series never give a try to realism because many elements for more realistic game were already present it just required some tweaking and better organization. It's also weird that all armys except Soviet and successor states didnt really apriciate enough indirect fire capabilities of tanks. Russian and Ukrainian tankers mastered art of indirect fire and are using it to devastating effect. Next step in tank evolution should be integration with drones built from ground up and new ammo for even better indirect fire role.
