Rent itself, vis-a-vis the common citizen, comes to mind. An owner often does better at keeping units empty given tax breaks that compensate for actual risk of tenant rental. The market lacks housing stock since principal owners want to sell to a gentrified, upscale, risk investment segment of income. The traditional tenant is something of an exotic luxury, a superfluity, from the owner/corporate view.

Monopolies can only exist due to government. Ditto large corperations. Government likes big business. As they can sell their product to them.

The Chinese government has long been suspected of hiring as many as 2,000,000 people to surreptitiously insert huge numbers of pseudonymous and other deceptive writings into the stream of real social media posts, as if they were the genuine opinions of ordinary people. Many academics, and most journalists and activists, claim that these so-called “50c party” posts vociferously argue for the government’s side in political and policy debates. As we show, this is also true of the vast majority of posts openly accused on social media of being 50c. Yet, almost no systematic empirical evidence exists for this claim, or, more importantly, for the Chinese regime’s strategic objective in pursuing this activity. In the first large scale empirical analysis of this operation, we show how to identify the secretive authors of these posts, the posts written by them, and their content. We estimate that the government fabricates and posts about 448 million social media comments a year. In contrast to prior claims, we show that the Chinese regime’s strategy is to avoid arguing with skeptics of the party and the government, and to not even discuss controversial issues. We show that the goal of this massive secretive operation is instead to distract the public and change the subject, as most of the these posts involve cheerleading for China, the revolutionary history of the Communist Party, or other symbols of the regime. We discuss how these results fit with what is known about the Chinese censorship program, and suggest how they may change our broader theoretical understanding of “common knowledge” and information control in authoritarian regimes.

10 minutes in and I'm gritting my teeth. So many comments being made to the effect of "Why pay an artist $100 for an episode thumbnail when we can get AI to do it?". Is there any wonder artists who are (or were) making their living doing things like thumnail illustrations or content copywriting are upset and feeling threatened? I agree with the premise of AI being a tool. What I find disturbing is the growing trend of audiences having no understanding that they are -not- looking at a painting or photograph, that the work is machine generated, and that the "artist" hasn’t put in the time and effort to hone their technical prowess manipulating physical materials, to earn the recognition that -they- not a computer did the work. The results are definitely arresting, and quite stunning visually. But the results feel heartless to me; no soul. And that's not even addressing where AI gets its source imagery - those "word prompts" don't generate images spontaneously; AI harvests artwork globally from the internet, whether known/"famous" artists or folks posting their original creations online. And no "this is mine" copyright disclaimer stops that. My opinion I realize but I’m not alone in it. I think the difference (between using Photoshop etc vs MidJourney etc) is that the photographer or graphic artist still need to train their eyes and hands, learn and understand the tool, how to use the multiple facets of Photoshop etc. And they get paid for their skill levels, especially if the work they do is created to be sold, either as commercial illustration or product photography, or as digitally rendered art. AI isn't a tool, especially Generative AI. AI replaces the need for human interaction. It may not replace the human aspects that have given the art world it’s geniuses but it will change the world for the many thousands of very talented but very basic artists who earn their livings day to day working at photographs or paintings to be sold at art fairs and galleries, for those that produce advertising and illustrations and ad content. It’s only since the Second World War that we’ve even had a significant percentage of the population able to support themselves as Artists, whether as Fine Artists or Commercial Artists. We’ve seen the manufacturing trades changed irrevocably by AI and mechanization - we will see the art world changed as well. It’s one thing to add a new tool to the artist’s skill set. It’s another to have the tool replace the artist, which is what we’re seeing as AI is moving at speeds and capabilities far beyond those projected even a year ago. Search out the thoughts and predictions of people like Mo Gawdat (ex Google AI developer, author of Scary Smart) and Mustefa Suleyman (CEO Microsoft AI and Deep Mind). Neither have much positive to say about where they see AI going now that it's self generating, and not just within the art world.
