    Amazing!! I'm also planning on doing the same trek this November. It looks like not that many people on the trail when you were there? Also for the sunrise las torres, what time did you have to get up?

    • @AudreyMarshall
      @AudreyMarshall Год назад

      You’re going to have a great time! The trails weren’t too crowded at all since we were early in the season. We mostly ran into other people at the campsites or lookout points. The hike from Chileno to Las Torres is a solid two hour trek uphill. We left a little after 3am to make it just in time for sunrise by 5:30am. It was also freezing once we got there, so make sure you have layers to add on!

    thanks for sharing. just wondering how much physical prep work one needs to be to hike the w-trek?

    • @AudreyMarshall
      @AudreyMarshall Год назад

      Great question! There are a ton of different ways you can approach this hike, so you'd be able to tailor it to your fitness level. We brought/carried all of our gear & food, so we were weighed down by our packs - this would be the more challenging approach (especially with some of the elevation gain). But you have the option of renting tents & sleeping bags along the way and/or purchasing meals at the camps, so you could essentially do this entire hike with just a day pack (making it much easier). Mostly, be sure you're able to walk really long distances consistently, are comfortable with some elevation gain, and throw in some strength workouts to ready your core & legs. The best way to train for backpacking is literally hitting a hiking trail, if you have that option!

    Hi and thanks for the video! I have a question for you and your viewers: Our son, who is 20 years old, wants to hike the Four Pass Loop trail next week during Spring Break with 3 other friends. This would be April 10th thru the 17th. He has never done such a hike before (actually he has never hiked before but, he says, 2 of the other three in his group are experienced). Our concern is if the trail will be accessible/hike-able in early April or will there be too much snow or mud? Also, we are from the east coast and he no experience with high altitudes. Do you think he will be okay? We want to encourage him to do hiking and other outdoor activities but we also have great concern for his safety. From his pov he says they will be okay and have been planning for this trip for a few months. Any comments are appreciated.

    • @jasonkamm5537
      @jasonkamm5537 2 года назад

      This hike is no joke and April would be impossible to complete this hike. Mid July at earliest because it is such high elevation and snow remains on mountain passes until mid summer. Also the elevation is not to be underestimated and this loop is not for beginners

    • @bebobman
      @bebobman 2 года назад

      @@jasonkamm5537 Thank you for your thoughts on this and you are absolutely correct. I took my son to our local REI store here in Maryland and had him speak with two very experienced hikers - one of which was from Colorado and knew the Four Pass Loop very well and many other trails in CO. After about 45 minutes of talking w/ my son I could see that his complete faith in his two "experienced" friends was changing. His friends (both 20 years old) had only hiked in New York state. In the end, they ended up changing their plans to go there in the summer so crisis (potentially) was averted.

    • @jasonkamm5537
      @jasonkamm5537 2 года назад

      I'm glad they postponed this hike. I did this hike in 2019 and have done lots of trips throughout WY, CO, MT, AZ, and UT and it was probably the hardest one. My sister in law who has ran 20 marathons also says this was probably the hardest one for her too. Also, permits will soon be required for backcountry camping along this route but don't know if it has been implemented quite yet

    • @AudreyMarshall
      @AudreyMarshall 2 года назад

      Agree with Jason's comments here! This hike is probably one of the more intense ones I've completed. Definitely beware of the altitude factor - I came in from LA the day before heading out and it really hit me hard a couple days in. That combined with the mileage, daily altitude gains & losses, and pack weight (note that bear canisters are required here), it's a challenging adventure (but super rewarding at the finish line). I'd recommend your son and his friends get in some practice backpacking trips locally beforehand, if possible!

    I first visited BSP as a teenager in the late 60s. My last visit was about 15 years ago. I moved to ME in the early 80s. I’ve experienced many amazing things there. Some associated with climbing and weather, but most with my encounters with wildlife. I’ve had moose run full speed through my campsite at Chimney Pond. I’ve had a fox enter the site acting more like a dog and actually walking calmly between my legs. I’ve had a moose with two yearlings bed down for the night in the field next to the bunkhouse while there. I’ve witnessed a small rodent migration, lemmings?, where they literally carpeted the forest floor. While searching for kindling across the tote road at Katadin stream campground I found a stack of boulders 4 high ranging in size from large car to bus to small house! No way this was done by man. Just a small sample of the many wonders I experienced there in 35+ years of visits. Thanks to Percival Baxter for his gift to Maine and the rest of the world.
