Smart Home Sellout - Trailer
Просмотров 2062 года назад
This is my first ever trailer for this channel!
Is it possible to weatherproof this coordinator?
I do not think so, the esp32 probably wont handle the hot or cold over long periods of time even if you waterproofed it. Why do you need an outdoor zwave controller? Are you trying to reach a shed or something?
@smarthomesellout was thinking to put it outside to maximise range and center it, to also yes, control the devices on the workshop. Any suggestions?
@@smarthomesellout thanks for the quick reply
@@jorgecosta95 I would either 1. do a point to point bridge with something like two UBB or cheaper from unifi with a separate zwave network, or if it's not that far, try zwave devices paired via zwave-LR and see if they are able to get signal out there. It's fine to have two zwave meshes for scenarios like this but not super common. I think this is really a better convo for discord tbh.
great content BUT... why would I need this? What problem does this solve?
Hey Louis thanks for the comment and frankly I agree, after watching this I even told Tube "i didnt do a great job explaining WHY they would want to buy it.. but hindsight is 20/20" I was originally making one big "Zwave for dummies" video but decided to break this out into parts because I just kept adding on useful info or things I wanted to cover.. so eventually I realized I should just split out the tube parts to their own video, but now I realize that I went over a couple things in the (not yet released) zwave for dummies video that would be very helpful here.. Anyways, the main reasons you'd want one of these is 1. to be able to centrally locate your zwave controller 2. to decouple from home assistant/haos/server hardware. 3. to escape a network rack, server rack, usb 3.x ports, SSDs, and other forms of interference. This is just as necessary for your zigbee coordinator as well! Another added benefit is removing the requirement for usb passthru for VM setups as some users have issues (such as vbox guys).
Great explanation! As a smart home enthusiast and long time HAS user, I always evaluate smart home content on the basis of "why do I need this" and am I creating a solution in search of problem.. in other words is this a nice to have or does it really solve a problem. Thank you for your hard work & committment to the community!
@@louisviciedo Thanks I'm not really interested in "putting out content" but rather helping people learn. If I accidentally put out content while doing that then it's a bonus lol
Hey great to see a new Home Assistant channel! Just subscribed!
Thanks I appreciate it Simon! I'd appreciate any constructive criticism. I know I need to work on a better cam setup, better lighting, say um/so less, editing, etc.
@@smarthomesellout The one thing I would suggest is to just keep making videos, the more you make, the more you learn. Try to have a schedule like once a week or once a month. You will naturally build up your studio gear over time.
Hi. Good info. Thanks! Where can I download the yaml you used?
dpaste.org/cBiAi this is the yaml - I edited the video description and added it a few min ago sorry about that!
@@smarthomesellout No problem! Thanks!
Brandon, I know your heart is in the right place, but this video is rather incoherent. Please revisit it and keep the following in mind. - Develop at least an outline of a script beforehand, and follow that script. It would be good to get someone to review the script before you start. It should flow logically and follow one topic through to the end, and you should go through at least one iteration of recording the video and rewatching it and re-recording it before you post the video. Posting a very rough draft of a video is not good practice. - You jump from one topic to another, from renaming to marketing to PIR to yaml to vs code to various other things instead of staying on topic. Please don't do that. The viewer gets lost. - Clicking rapidly between different web pages is very disorienting for the viewer. Don't click anything without explaining what you are doing. At one point you click ignore on a sensor installation without explanation. But that's just one example, many times you click four or five links in just two or three seconds. Impossible to follow. - It's clear that in many spots you yourself are confused by what you are doing. This does not Inspire confidence in the viewer. Make sure you understand what you are doing before you do it, and explain before you do something why you are doing it. I know this is complicated stuff and you're trying to do a great job, and I hope you'll take these comments into consideration and repost an improved version of this potentially valuable video.
Hey David I have read through this and will be improving some of the things you have mentioned. I think calling it incoherent is a little harsh, maybe I just need to limit the scope of future videos along with more practice. I did have a script but indeed the cracks showed. I noticed compared to my scripts of my other videos from a couple years ago this one was more bullet points so I will revisit that. I will make sure to slow down the web page and other clicks - I prepared the websites I would need and had them all up ready to use but then I ended up jumping around a bit. I think a lot of this will just come with time. I also need to invest in a better camera setup but that will have to be closer to Christmas at the earliest.
@@smarthomesellout sorry, didn't mean for incoherent to sound harsh. I meant it in the sense of "lacking orderly continuity, arrangement, or relevance : inconsistent." And I really do appreciate the effort.
@@davidhite1868 No problem I appreciate the feedback. I do not plan on remaking this video but I'll try to do better on the next one.
What a cool sensor. Definitely have to pick up a few. thanks for the rundown!
Thanks Pat make sure to follow the tuning in the wiki it really simplifies tracking objects the way you want!
great video, very informative and nicely done!
thanks man!

Why not just use your desktop computer? I'm new to this, obviously. I'm running boot camp on my Mac, so I can have Windows 10. Do I install it to my Mac or my windows? Thank you
Hey Robert thanks for the comment. You can run it in a VM on a windows pc or mac but it needs to be running 24/7 and in general people often have issues with usb passthrough (like for zwave or zigbee dongle) when using virtualbox on windows or on a mac. As long as you're comfortable with usb passthrough and your hypervisor/VM config then you can run it on windows/mac no problem. If you are familiar with docker / docker compose you might prefer to install and run it that way instead of with home assistant OS, but you will lose the supervisor which means you wont be able to have the addon store(very useful) or the ability to restore from backups.
@@smarthomesellout Thank you! Ya all this is wayyy over my head. I gonna just stick with the apps I’ve been using. But thank you 🙏
@@robcbr91 I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit. There are complicated ways to do complicated things in home assistant which are over my head but often it's extremely simple to do things you'd think were black magic. I highly suggest you at least install home assistant and play with it. The amount of things it finds on your lan and allows you control over is really great. Last week I setup a cheap sensor on my mailbox and now when the mailbox is open I get a notification on my phone and each homepod mini in the house plays the oldschool AOL "you've got mail" audio clip haha. discord.gg/2xJVjqE here's an invite to my discord server if you feel like chatting and want to join a cool community. we're all tech guys doing smart home, homelab, 3d printing, etc.
Good video! I removed a crude x-10 setup from my home a few years ago because it was too hard to find parts and it did not work reliably. Attempted to set up one or two z-wave devices with my Ring, but that was a nightmare. Decided on Home Assistant, hopefully for ease of use. Attempted to run on CasaOS with a zooz USB stick, but that didn't work so well. I have settled on a cheap NUC with HAOS using the zooz USB adapter. We'll see how that goes -- I am optimistic! I am retired I.T. so I have the knowledge to work on things, but I just don't have the desire to have an overly complex setup that no one else can understand! Looking forward to future videos on the topic...
Hey Ned thanks for the comment. I think you'll love Home Assistant man and a 700 series zoos stick is a good zwave controller. Make sure you put the zooz stick on a usb extender to improve performance. USB 3.x ports cause a ton of interference for zigbee, zwave, etc usb sticks so using a usb extender (ideally a usb 2.0 extender) to move the usb stick away from the usb ports is the best scenario to decrease interference. Feel free to join us on discord for more back and forth about hass and other tech topics like 3d printing, homelab, etc. discord.gg/2xJVjqE
Never occurred to him to make the bed :)
that was after i made the bed lol
This is a respectable start. Just subscribed.
Thanks David it's an uphill battle and I've got to start somewhere! For the next video I was thinking about a specific tutorial such as setting up hyperion with wled and an esp8266/esp32. I was thinking about starting with these intro videos and building on them but frankly I think more people will be interested in "how do i do this cool thing" vs me explaining stuff i've learned and looking at the camera the whole time.
@@smarthomesellout Go ahead with the tutorial. You have an engaging manner which makes it sound interesting and is just as important as the innovative subject. Keep going.
:)
Thanks for stopping by Richard :)
Good luck with the channel, you giant nerd!
Thanks man i really appreciate that.
