How to set up an RD-2000 for classical music

Roland FP-30 review and advice

This is my personal, NON-commercial review of the Roland FP-30. I put special emphasis on the piano sound. If you are currently looking for a new digital piano, you might like some advice and want to hear what my experiences are using this instrument. I try to provide you with some details on the piano sound, so I avoid playing fancy pieces and instead play more single notes. In the video, I do...

    Yes, me too, worked with this RD for 6 months and gave up. Classical voicing and tuning is what I was looking for. This video is 7 years old, Roland has offered a new (must purchase) V-Piano expansion called German Grand. I am assuming a Steinway Concert D emulation. I have been very tempted to buy this for $150US. Have you added this expansion? Today I have demoted the RD2000 from solo acoustic piano for practice and recording to my synth studio for playing in orchestration with many other instruments, hiding the sound of the RD in the mix. Today I am very happy with the Yamaha DGX-670 for solo acoustic piano practice and recording (but only after my own sound design on it).

      I don't have the new expansions yet, and I don't know whether I will need them. I play on an acoustic grand, and the RD-2000 is mostly there for working with the computer. Nowadays, it is actually overkill for me since I don't need all its many features.

I think V-Piano expansion has very good capability to edit the piano sounds. I am in to western classical music. Thank you. I'm sad about my RD2000. It has some noisy keys, the keybed is not very good, not robust as it should be. When I tap at the side of many keys, or play staccato, I hear annoying noises from the keybed. This should never happen. Fortunately, the instrument is fine, and these noises don't go through the sound system, nor the phones. I have to play with phones for not to get annoyed by them. 😮😮😮

    Classical pianists DO NOT use reverb (doesn't exist on an acoustic piano) and they sit at the piano on a bench without a computer keyboard in the way. Of course, you should set it up with a decent audio system. That makes a tremendous difference. The RD2000 has an exceptional sound. However you need to reproduce it.

    • @tiroh8490
      @tiroh8490 2 года назад

      Classical pianists don't use an RD-2000 but a grand. This video is not about being a classical pianist but how to make the sound of the RD-2000 less dry. A dry grand doesn't sound as attractive when compared to a grand played in a concert hall. I don't recommend to hook electrical pianos up to any audio system. The room acoustics of most people's living rooms (who are not audiophiles) with all the many reflecting surfaces at the wrong places don't lend themselves to attractive reverb. Also, multiple speakers would have to be placed at exactly the right places with the right distances and angles relative to the listeners which is something only audiophiles would be willing to care about (and pay for).

    You can always reduce treble on those brighter pianos you don't like, right? Good advice for those that like that style of sound. I greatly detest that wet, reverb-laden sound like venues that add too many reflections. I love the sound of acoustic pianos and strings and horns in venues with sound-deadening panels throughout the walls and ceiling. Far better for appreciating the performance and the work musicians put into their tone and finer nuances of their playing, all in best clarity, which is a real treat.

      @tiroh8490 3 года назад

      No, I didn't. It is important to understand that those instruments are all very good, one isn't better than the other. It depends on (a) what you want to do exactly and (b) what your personal taste is. For instance, the RD-2000 is a master keyboard with extensive MIDI capabilities. It is supposed to control many other MIDI instruments on stage. If you don't need that, you don't need the RD-2000.

    Well my comment might have come up a little late, but this is the time I decided to buy a digital piano. Without the smallest hesitation I'd call this the best review I've seen on this product, and I've seen almost everything available out there especially because I cannot try the piano myself before buying it. And yes, acoustic pianos with a metallic taste are not bad pianos. In fact, except for a few uprights, most pianos bee it Yamaha or Steinway will always show that metallic sound here and there. It's undoubtedly more pronounced in some brands though. For example I've studied for my entire childhood on an August Forster. It was an upright piano with quite an overdone heaviness, with a metallic sound especially in the 3 4 last notes of the central octave. It looks like that piano sound is imprinted on my brain and that's why I'm fond to that particular quality of tone still. •Also, it's very appreciated that you mentioned the negatives of this piano without extra negativity, very well done! Vielen Dank für den tollen Service!

      @tiroh8490 3 года назад

      Gut. (Ich sage mal internet-typisch "du", ich hoffe, das ist ok.) Also: Eine Grundregel von Live-Auftritten ist (unabhängig ob Rock, Pop oder Kirchenmusik), dass man den Klang an die jeweilige Raumakustik anpassen muss. Und nicht alle PAs arbeiten gleich oder gleich gut. (Manche Live-Musiker haben sogar als Notbehelf für den Fall, dass die PA vor Ort nicht gut funktioniert, eigene Mixer dabei.) Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass es für die Raumakustik ein großer Unterschied ist, ob der Raum leer ist oder ob das Publikum da ist. Die Anwesenheit vieler Menschen verändert die Akustik nämlich unter Umständen ganz immens. Das ist eine Sache, die man nur mit Erfahrung in den Griff bekommt. -- Bevor wir klären können, wie du dein Setup korrigieren musst, gibt es zunächst drei weitere Fragen: (1) Wie viele Wege haben dein Verstärker und deine Lautsprecher? (2) Wie groß sind die Durchmesser deiner Lautsprecher? (3) Welche Leistung hat dein Verstärker in Watt?

    • @tiroh8490
      @tiroh8490 4 года назад

      I switched to an RD-2000, so I don't know how my FP-30 would behave today. I can only say that the FP-30's action felt very sturdy, the keys were precise and without any slack, as I would expect from a manufacturer like Roland. In general the key actions of digital pianos are "parts of least concern", at least with instruments that are not super-cheap. They shouldn't change over time. At that moment where your key action fails, something else will have failed already, for example the amplifier electronics. If you see a DP whose key action rattles or clicks, I would assume that it's an extremely cheap one. (The FP-30 is cheap, but not extremely cheap.)

      @@tiroh8490 Thank you. How does it help with that? I wonder now whether the fp80 that had many more built in sounds and rhythms would have helped with that. My hope is to create music but i need to learn to play better and more about how music is put together.

    • @tiroh8490
      @tiroh8490 3 года назад

      An instrument like the RD-2000 has lots of sounds and options built in, so I can experiment with that. However, it is "just" a stage piano (in contrast to an entertainer keyboard or a workstation), that means it cannot help you with arranging or producing music. For that you still need either a PC or a sequencer. In my experience, stage pianos are only the right choice for people who want to -- surprise -- play the piano. They look impressive, but they won't impress you anymore when you sit before them and realize that you are actually not a pianist but more of a sampler or synth guy.

    • @tiroh8490
      @tiroh8490 4 года назад

      Loudness is influenced by the type of headphones. If you are using hi-fi headphones, the sound may be a bit quieter because hi-fi headphones usually have a higher impedance which causes the loudness to be lower. I use Sennheiser HD 598 (a slightly older model, I think), and for my taste the sound is loud enough. If you want it loud, you would need headphones with low impedance, but then the sound may not be very good. I didn't test that. (Of course, you could also use an external amplifier ... but honestly, is it really THAT quiet?)

    • @tiroh8490
      @tiroh8490 4 года назад

      Ok, my Sennheiser HD 598 have 50 Ω impedance, the Roland RH-5 have 32 Ω, the Sennheiser HD 180 have 24 Ω, and the Shure SRH440 have 44 Ω. So, the impedance does not seem to be causing your impression that the sound is quiet. You are lucky that you like the sound of the Shure, because they are studio headphones. With studio headphones you always have to be a bit careful because those are not necessarily made for LISTENING to music but for PRODUCING it. This can lead to a different kind of frequency response. This surely depends on the model.
