Thank You Christa for the way that you tell your story. As a parent I learned about how wayward two youth leaders had been around our three children and I mistakenly attempted to go through the Sexual Complaints System of the Presbyterian Church. The entire process is a scam, in my opinion. There is no support offered to the abused, the process does everything to minimize and cover up any transgressing, while the abusers get all the protection and support. Isn't that the absolute opposite of how our Lord would deal with these situations? My opinion is that there are numerous other leaders who are involved in the complaints process that are or have been abusers themselves.....I would not recommend anyone to follow the Presbyterian process. The resulting damage from doing so has only added to the abuse that occurred. Hearing your story has been inspiring and I will reflect on all of it.

Such great discussions, and my experience is that these are difficult discussions that are very resistant in churches, including my new one in which we have been through church, spiritual abuse and hurt, and there is a reluctance to heal as a group they want people to do it individually and to not really talk about it in the church. Isn’t that sad? Perhaps this is what most churches do but that doesn’t mean it’s right.

All fundamentalist and high demand religions teach these toxic messages to young girls. In my case my mother was indoctrinated in purity culture from her Orthodox Jewish background. She was the enforcer and tried to dictate and control everything I wore, the boys I dated, who their parents were, etc. It drove a wedge between us that never healed. Her ideas about my sweet loving boyfriend were along the same lines you describe and our parents actually ended our relationship, forbidding us to see each other breaking both our hearts even though we were good kids. She finally forced me into an early marriage with an abusive controlling man who believed in dominating me and our home life. As soon as I gave birth to my son I knew we had to get away from him but my mother kept trying to force us to go back by controlling us financially. When I see the wonderful easy relationship between Sheila and her daughters I am so gratified to see it and know that's the way it should be. We did finally get away and after years of financial hardship I became a lawyer and was able to help women and children to a healthier way of life. But it still makes me sad how mothers and daughters become enemies because of purity culture.

My husband and I just started going to a new church. My husband met with the Pastor to make sure their ideas matched our beliefs (especially in regards to marriage and sex). Well, fast forward to week 7 and during a message about communication in marriage, the Pastor states, “MEN NEED SEX, WOMEN NEED COMMUNICATION.” And then went on to get men to hoot and holler in agreement. My husband and I were SHOCKED to say the least. When my husband met with the Pastor, we had the belief that he didn’t have this male-centric sex idea. Needless to say, after we talked to him after the dumpster fire of a sermon, he basically said he does NOT agree with how we think and won’t change his mind. So we’re looking to find a new church.
