William, disguised in a Spring Bonnie costume, lures five children to the backrooms of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and murders them in what becomes known as the "Missing Children Incident." Unbeknownst to him, the souls of the murdered children-possessing deep anguish-bind themselves to the animatronics, bringing them to life as haunted beings. Around the same time, Henry’s own daughter, Charlotte "Charlie" Emily, is killed outside Fredbear’s Family Diner by William. Her soul possesses The Puppet, an animatronic designed by Henry to protect children, transforming it into a vengeful spirit. These events lead to the closure of Fredbear’s and tarnish Fazbear Entertainment’s reputation, though the company continues to expand and rebrand. William Afton’s experiments with a supernatural substance called Remnant-believed to be derived from the agony and souls of the dead-fuel his obsession with immortality. His twisted experiments extend to his own family, resulting in devastating consequences. William’s youngest son, Evan (the Crying Child), is subjected to constant bullying by his older brother, Michael Afton. During one such incident at Fredbear’s Family Diner, Evan is forced too close to Fredbear’s mouth. A spring-lock failure causes the animatronic to crush Evan’s head, leading to his death. This event haunts Michael, who becomes determined to uncover his father’s secrets and atone for his role in the tragedy. Meanwhile, William’s daughter, Elizabeth, becomes captivated by Circus Baby, an animatronic her father created for a new venture, Circus Baby’s Pizza World. Despite William’s warnings, Elizabeth gets too close to Circus Baby, who is programmed to kidnap children, and is killed. Her soul becomes trapped inside Circus Baby, adding another layer of tragedy to the Afton family. After these events, William opens an underground facility called Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental, using advanced animatronics designed for nefarious purposes. Michael, unaware of the dangers, takes a job at the facility to uncover the truth about his father. The animatronics, led by Circus Baby, merge into a being called Ennard, which uses Michael’s body as a disguise to escape the facility. Although Ennard later abandons Michael, he survives, now determined to end his father’s reign of terror. William’s hubris ultimately leads to his downfall. After dismantling the haunted animatronics to harvest their Remnant, he is chased by the spirits of his victims into a hidden room in one of the pizzerias. There, he dons the Spring Bonnie suit to scare them away, but the suit’s spring-lock mechanisms fail, crushing him inside. Trapped in the suit and still alive, William becomes the grotesque entity known as Springtrap. Fazbear Entertainment attempts to distance itself from its dark past, closing locations and covering up scandals, but the lingering hauntings and urban legends keep the company’s reputation in tatters. Years later, Henry Emily re-emerges with a plan to end the horrors once and for all. He reopens a dilapidated pizzeria, deliberately luring all remaining animatronics-including Springtrap (William Afton), Molten Freddy (a remnant of Ennard), Scrap Baby (Elizabeth), and Lefty (containing The Puppet)-to one location. In a final act of redemption, Henry sets the building on fire, sacrificing himself to destroy the animatronics and their souls. While this seems to end the nightmare, William’s spirit survives, as his consciousness has been digitized into the form of a virus known as Glitchtrap. Glitchtrap surfaces in *FNAF: Help Wanted*, a VR game created by Fazbear Entertainment to rehabilitate its public image. The game inadvertently becomes a vessel for William’s return, as his digital form manipulates a developer named Vanny, who becomes his follower. This leads to the events of *Security Breach*, set in the futuristic Mega Pizzaplex. A young boy named Gregory, trapped in the Pizzaplex overnight, discovers the remnants of Fazbear Entertainment’s dark history while being pursued by Vanny and hostile animatronics. He allies with Glamrock Freddy, an unusually protective animatronic, to survive. Deep within the Pizzaplex, Gregory uncovers Burntrap, a decayed version of William Afton, who attempts to rise again. With Freddy’s help, Gregory confronts and seemingly defeats Burntrap, though the full extent of William’s survival remains ambiguous. The *FNAF* series explores themes of tragedy, guilt, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. At its core, it is a story of lost innocence and the persistence of the human soul, told through cryptic clues, hidden minigames, and an ever-expanding mythos.
