    Here's a tip from a veteran inverter repair tech. NEVER test a newly repaired inverter with a battery. Always test the inverter with a variable power supply set at a low current setting (3 to 4 amps) max. And always use an oscilloscope to make sure that your inverter is producing the proper waveform.

    • @proficientprepper
      @proficientprepper 12 часов назад

      Thanks for the tip. That was my first inverter repair. What is the most common issue you face in that situation? Something not hooked up correctly? I'm assuming the low current will help reduce the possibility of damage while still letting you know something is wrong.

    It seems the low frequency inverters do not shut off as easy.. I have another 3200 high frequency running along with a 1200 Victron 24 volt (same batteries). When the battery hits the top the 3200 will beep and kick off and the Phoenix never misses a beat. I’ve seen a flash voltage of 35.14 volts.

    12v isn't bad. The problem is when you connect higher voltages. The higher the voltage the more enegetic the spark. If you're that worried about the spark just install a disconnect between the source and the inverter. Then you don't need to worry about the spark on hookup. The resistor is actually important for safe capacitor discharge, especially on large capacitors.

    My only gripe with this lantern is the battery indicator. 15% is way too low for my liking, personally I'd have it switch to red at 25-30% and flashing at 10% and preferably another led colour to indicate >80% charge for battery longevity.

    Thanks - in what order did you attach the panels,brackets, snd 2x4 brace?

    • @proficientprepper
      @proficientprepper 10 дней назад

      I have two of these now. I built the second one in a much easier way. After building the entire base, I ended up putting a 2 x 4 on top of each bracket. The 2 x 4 was maybe an inch longer than the solar panels. Then I installed the aluminum angles on the 2 x 4s. The I was able to just lay the solar panels on the aluminum angles and attach them with screws. So much much easier. On the first one, I did not use the 2 x 4s and I attached the solar panels to the aluminum angles separately. Then I lifted the entire thing (very heavy) and put it on top of the brackets. Not a good way to do that at all on the first one.

    I have 2 of the timeusb group 31 100ah pro battery's. I have done a capacity test using a Shunt and got just above 100 ah on each battery. I did a mild test drawing from 350 to 500 watts , I used My 4k projector and home theater sound system. I had no issues and have them running in my small solar setup now. I talked with timeusb customer service a lot with questions. They were upfront about there warrenty, it is a pro rated 5 years. Like the 1st year is 100% but it goes down from there. Not that this is a bad thing, no other company would even answer my direct question lol. As of now I have no regrets getting the battires and may even add 2 more. Now in a year from now who knows?

      I asked the same question to a few of the less expensive battires (all around the same price) I never got a full yes or no. I've been dealing with battires for a long time. A pro rated warrenty has about always been the case. Unless we can go back years ago when they (lead acid) has a 1, 3 or even 5 year replamnet warranty. Anyways with the cost I figured it was worth the risk. Also the battires with a10 year warrrenty, even if they honor it. Who knows where they will be in 5 to 10 years. I am sure the really costly ones may in fact be 100% covered for the stated time. So far mine are still doing great!

      I did a capacity test on a couple batteries I use for Solar, hooked up in parallel. I found trying to find a battery capacity using an inverter is almost a waste of time. My inverted started squeaking at about 11 volts also. My Power Meter read 55 Ah. When I charged the batteries up to full charge my Shunt meter read 70 Ah I guess the batteries still had some juice left and the BMS didn't shut down just the Inverter. My point is you won't get an accurate discharge reading when using an Inverter in my experience.

    The surge protectors in the combiner box are meant to protect surge from a panel short circuit. They do not offer lightning strike protection. Another Ytubers found this out the hard way. For lightning strike protection you need a DC midnight solar device hanging off the side of the combiner box. This prevents sending high lightning strike voltage and current traveling down wire to house/mppts. There is a several year old Ytube lab testing post of Midnight solar device vs "cannister filled with powder". The cannister offered no protection from lightning strike, while the Midnight offered multiple strike protection to lab generated strike equivalent.

      I originally purchased those boxes nearly a year before so I could easily shutdown the PV system at the panels. I thought they would provide some lightning protection. But maybe not. I will definitely take a look at including those Midnite solar devices.

    A very interesting, well done, and informative vid. Thanks! You should unwind the ground wire on your combiner box surge protectors. The winding of that ground wire greatly increases the inductance of the ground path. Inductors limit the rate-of-change of current thru them. Trying to sink a lightning surge requires a VERY fast path to ground. Any slowdown directly raises the peak voltage that the protected side will see during events.

      I was wondering if anyone would comment on that. The reason I wrapped the wire around the iron pipe is because I thought I may redo the way I mounted these and I might need that length. You make an excellent point. I can always get new wire if needed. Thanks for sharing that information!

      @@proficientprepper If you're like me you'll "think" you might change something right up until it's so old you have to replace it. LOL. Unless you see the coming day you're going to change the setup I'd shorten the wire. If you want it longer later, use a quality split-bolt or a waterproof butt-splice (used for well pumps) and re-extend it. Could be your new setup would need it longer than you have anyway, and you'd still need it extend it. As it is now the unit is probably rendered about 1/2 as effective is it would be otherwise. With lightning protection it's often a game-of-inches where if the let-through voltage peak had been only a couple of volts lower the protected equipment would've survived.

    You mean you COULD NOT list the LIGHNING Breakers & ARRESTORS you used in this video. MG what are you !?
