I'm a lifelong transport enthusiast, with a particular passion for unusual and rare buses. I enjoy driving vehicles of all types, so join me on my quest to film some of the highlights of my driving career.
I am also the owner of JMY120N, a 1974 Leyland National, which is more commonly known as the Super National. I bought this bus almost 5 years ago, and I am attempting to restore it to as new condition. I will try and record some of my progress along the way, and hope that this inspires others to attempt their own restoration projects.

Leyland National Cold Starts: Mk1 vs Mk2, 510 vs 680. Includes a bonus wash for the Super National!
A short video of me cold starting and shunting two Leyland Nationals in and out of our storage barn, primarily to give one of them a much needed wash.
Firstly, we have my own Mk1, JMY120N, which has a Leyland 510 engine, followed by a friends 680 powered Mk2, LAG188V, which is also the first production Mk2 built.
The Mk1 in particular can be difficult to start from cold, the 510 engine having something of a reputation for poor starting and extremely poor emissions. Mind starts reasonably well, but still clags in true 510 fashion! The Mk2 starts really easily, no doubt helped by it having been fitted with a reconditioned engine a few years ago. Although it is worth mentioning that 680 engi...

A ride on Merseyside PTE "Jumbo" Leyland Atlantean XKC831K at NWVRT Running Day 12th November 2022
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.2 года назад
Here we have a ride out on a Merseyside PTE Alexander AL-type bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR2/1, XKC831K, as part of the North West Vehicle Restoration Trust Running Day on Saturday 12th November 2022. This bus was commonly known as a "Jumbo" Atlantean because of the longer 33ft long chassis, as opposed to the standard 30ft PDR1/1 that most Atlantean buying operators bought at the time. The extra...
A Spirited Drive of Leyland 680 Powered Bristol VR EWS753W in Stroud
Просмотров 19 тыс.2 года назад
Another video of me driving the wonderfully raucous EWS753W. This time on roads where I got the chance to "open the taps" a bit, or possibly a lot! I have previously uploaded a short video of this bus before, but filmed on wet and narrow country lanes, where it was impossible to gain the full effect of why this bus is so different to a standard VR. EWS753W is an ECW bodied Bristol VRT, and one ...
Leyland Leopard PRA109R Evening Drive in the Peak District - Unrefined and throaty 680 Roar!
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
Here we have a very nice Alexander T-type bodied Leyland Leopard, PRA109R, being driven by myself around parts of the Peak District in Derbyshire. We were running as part of a 4 vehicle convoy, which by coincidence were all Alexander bodied single deckers. PRA109R was new to National Bus Company subsidiary, Trent Motor Traction, in October 1976 as fleet number 109. It later spent time with Lanc...
Leyland National Mk1 JMY120N - The Super National (Includes cold start, on board footage & drive by)
Просмотров 172 тыс.3 года назад
A short video of my own Leyland National Mk1, JMY120N, otherwise known as the Super National. We see the bus being started from cold, followed by internal and external footage of the bus being driven by myself around North Lincolnshire. The Super National was a one-off version of the Leyland National single deck bus, intended as a kind of mobile boardroom on wheels. It had many features now con...
The magnificent EWS753W - a Bristol VR with Leyland 680 power!
Просмотров 8 тыс.3 года назад
11th July 2021 was a great day. Not only did I get to drive the wonderful KHW309E, I also managed a short drive in this very rare Bristol VR, in the shape of ECW bodied EWS753W. This is one of only two VRT's known to survive with a Leyland 680 engine (the other being ex Southdown JWV275W). EWS753W was new to Bristol Omnibus in August 1981 as fleet number 5545. It was one of around 30 VRT's fitt...
KHW309E - A Magnificent Bristol RELL, Loud and Proud with a Magnificent Sound!
Просмотров 41 тыс.3 года назад
Another day, another time I get lucky and drive a Bristol RE, with a Leyland 680 under the floor. Days don't get much better, especially when they're unexpected like this was. Much thanks go to Mike Ede of the Stroud RE Group for allowing me to take this fine machine out. I hope I drove her suitably well, I no passengers to complain so who knows?!! Now all this Covid nonsense is almost at an en...
TRY118H - The Loudest Bristol RE of Them All! EXTENDED VERSION
Просмотров 41 тыс.5 лет назад
An extended version of my previous upload of ECW bodied Bristol RE in service at the Horsham Bus Rally on 1st September 2019. This bus, with its characteristically loud exhaust, could probably win an award for being the loudest Bristol RE in existence!

A short clip of preserved ECW bodied Bristol RELL6L, TRY118H in service at the Horsham Bus Rally on 1st September 2019. This Leyland 680 powered bus is extremely vocal, and could probably win the award for the loudest Bristol RE in existence! TRY118H was new to Leicester City Transport in December 1969. It later spent time with Ipswich Transport before migrating to the North East and joining Ne...

A short ride inside preserved Bristol RELH, EWS168D at the Lincolnshire Vintage Vehicle Society running day on 3rd November 2013. This coach is fitted with an Alexander Y-type body, and was new to Eastern Scottish as fleet number XA168 in February 1966. This was a superb vehicle to ride on, and is one of only a few survivors to have the 5-speed manual transmission fitted to series 1 RE's.

A short ride on preserved Bristol RELH6G, CVL850D. This dual-purpose coach was new to Lincolnshire Roadcar in May 1966 as fleet number 1431. It was withdrawn in October 1982 and purchased for preservation. After initially being rallied in the mid 1980's, it was stored for over 20 years, and ownership changed several times during this period. It was eventually sent to Busworks in Blackpool for r...

A short video of preserved Bristol LH6L AFB586V at the Yorkshire Dales Running Day in Skipton on Sunday 8th October 2017. This was my second attempt at recording audio and video seperately, using my old Samsung Galaxy S6 to capture the video (1920 x 1080 at 60 fps), and a Tascam DR-40 to capture the audio. these are then joined together in Windows Movie Maker. On this occasion, the camera was h...

Lincolnshire Roadcar Leyland Olympian B503FFW in Lincoln 12/08/2017

A short ride through the outskirts of Lincoln on preserved ECW bodied Leyland Olympian B503FFW. This bus was new to Lincolnshire Roadcar in June 1985 as fleet number 1503. When new, it had dual-purpose seating and a high-ratio back axle. Sadly, the original style seats are long gone, but the high ratio axle remains, meaning that this Olympian can motor on when needed. When Stagecoach took Roadc...

Is the mk11 ex east yorkshire motor services (eyms).???
I've driven VRTs. I never did like the air throttle. Your driving reminds me of the "coming off" journey late at night.
Memories. The National was the bus used by the Barrow in Furness bus company. I remember travelling on them many times in the late 70s and early 80s
Out of town diff what a difference in pick up
Also TRY 121 H is under peservation up in leicester on the old leicester corparation livery.... Both these sound lovely....
Great job mate. Reminiscing about my school days in Crawley.
Drove a Leyland Lynx tipper with the 500 engine in the mid 80s, to be honest it always fired up staight away. Exhaust at the back of the cab sounded great, was this a bad engine or a victim of circumstances?
6:15 - 6:23 absolutely comical 😂😂
I don't know about 'unrefined' - sounds like a symphony to me. Yes, they make a racket - but what a glorious racket. Enjoyed the vid. I remember driving Leopards through villages at night and setting off car alarms with the thunderous crackling exhaust. The pish on the gearchange is addictive - as are of course the famous Leyland brake effects.
Listening to this is like music to my ears and has taken me back to my childhood taking the bus with my mum brilliant sound never forgotten
What a noise..... fantastic.
Beautiful sound
8:34 On headphones with eyes shut, that's pure Leyland National ASMR right there!
having gone to school on these buses 35-40 years ago, this explains why some were more vocal than others ...
round where i live our bus route had UVL 874 and 877 M on it sometimes
my favourite childhood buses, because of the turbos
I used to find Leyland Nationals so boring when they were common-place, in my childhood, especially because we had a local bus company running a variety of interesting Leyland Leopards, which I prefer. But these days I miss the Nationals too and love seeing these videos of restored ones. It's always the way, that you appreciate things more when they're mostly gone!
I've noticed, almost every time you start from a dead stop, you shift to 2nd and then to 1st. What for?
A 5 speed air shift too, that is awesome. Were those pneumocyclic?
Often travelled between Box and Stroud as a Cotswold Chine alumnus! Usually on a Saturday!
People say the Leyland 510 is clattery, but I remember as a child in the 80's going to school, always being pleased when a National turned up at the bus stop. The engines were smooth with no vibration, and the bus rode well, and they were fast. We always got there early with a National. They were so much better than the predecessor busses. Outside they were a bit vocal, but they sounded like they meant business, like a capable mechanical machine.
Absolutely gorgeous
That really does sound good. It was Atlanteans in Liverpool on family visiting, which really got me into the type.
I remember 5545 & 5546 when they were new in national bus green. These two buses had the electronic destination display. Never seemed to work right! They were based in Bath in those days.
A pity they didn't go ahead with their plans to offer the AEC AV691.
I remember always trying to get an RE or an Atlantean on school days, allowing the boring Olympians and Nationals to pass by, even though it would make me 10 minutes late at least. Something about the intrinsic music of these beasts soothed me and allowed me to complete my maths homework in stale smoky harmonious bouncy peace. When I was 17, I fell in love with a redhead at my bus stop who worked at Waterstones, so this regime soon fell into abeyance. Thereafter, neither Atlantean or Olympian; nor National or RE plying the Great North Road, were here or there.
I love the Leyland engine's growl, simply fantastic!
I'd love to be a passenger on one of these. From the video alone you can feel its power.
Haven’t driven a mk 1 or 2 since I were at Yorkshire Traction (Barnsley & Sheffield) back in the 90’s 2000’s. Would love to get a chance of a drive once again if anyone knows any owners. Still have my clean psv
Actually that's one of the quietest VRs I've seen, with hardly any squeaks or rattles or creaking from the springs! 😁
9:50 its cool seeing old and new buses together.
I love the sound of a Leyland National use to ride them everyday in the West Midlands with Chase Buses I think Chase Buses were the last company to use Nationals in 2007 😊
Has it got a glass screen behind the cab❓ So much less rattly than perspex on BOC. Totally forgot the signature Bristol brake squeak copied by my Grandma's mynah bird❤❤❤
That sound and gearbox just blows me away. Amazing.
That engine creates one of the sounds of my childhood. The X9 from Blaenrhondda to Pontypridd
wayfarer ticket machine 🤩 that takes me back
Reminiscient of the 2-stroke Detroit Diesel "Screaming Jimmys" but a bit more guttural and staccato, partly due to the multi-speed transmission vs. the GMC buses' hydraulic drive (basically a torque converter used by itself).
I could tell that was Stroud before even reading the description. Grew up in the 70s and 80s with these, Leyland Nationals and Bristol VRs, first with Bristol Omnibus then City of Gloucester/Stroud Valleys/Cheltenham and District before Stagecoach took over in 1993.
I grow up there Bristol ls mw,s REs Layland Nationals Vr,s Ledecka's even the 2 door RE,s and every type of MW,s and the short wheelbase RE,s even had a couple of new Mw,s kind of like an MW kind of mixed with an re , we had them all in Stroud
So who moved the bucket from under the engine bay
Drove these in service, 729 from Brighton to Tunbridge Wells.. Passenger Fares = £1.99 single, £2.00 return.. Always Full.. Great Days of National Transport.. New Stagecoach Autovomit Buses rattle like never before..
Either your roads are immaculate or that bus doesnt have a single squeaky or rattly panel on it, puts modern buses to shame, amazing oldtimer!
is that a blackpool Swift to the left?
Sounds epic
Am I the only one who thinks these magnificent Bristol RELL single deckers should always be painted in red? Obviously it’s because I grew up with red Ribble liveried ones but that green one in front just looks weird. Great video though and the best bus ever, the only one I’d put on par with it is the Leyland National but hey! Everyone’s mileage varies 🙂
love your enthusiasm running to get driving! Great video many thanks
Nice, that sound take me back
I used to drive JEMIMA all around South Wales whilst in preservation there, particularly at the Barry, Swsnsea and Bleanafon shows. Timeline 2007 to 2010. Loved the growl and the power!
Love The Smoke Screen
Did these things have 510 engines? They have that beautiful ticky whine to them....
read the comments - it's all there.
So TRY118H Was TRYing to be The loudest! Or was it TRYing to deafen you? Sorry I'll go grab my jacket
