Cheeky or what?
Cycling home and I'm noticing a car in the shared bus lane wanting to reverse to park up to do some shopping. So I wait for the van to pass before edging slightly over the white line to clear the stationary car (before returning back to the bus lane) and this cheeky chappy beeps his horn. I'm in two minds here, firstly they feel they have more rights on the road and rather than adjust to concentrate and empathise with the hazard I'm faced with, decided to "BEEP!" for me to move. Perhaps I'm supposed to stop, and wait for the statioary car to park up, whist blocking its path (maybe the Brits do this, but we Scots don't), or perhaps the driver of the car beeping it's horn was watching out f...

As when entering any enchanted world , it is customary to leave the fairies a gift token of gratitude, be that a dislodged piece of sheep wool caught in bracken or a twig leaf as a gesture of respect, all overseen by the king of the faries in Castle Ewen, or you could find yourself caught in their wrath. They accepted the gift.

That is what I used to do, 100 klicks at 18mph, for two weeks, to get fit, and then increase by 5mph increments for each block of two weeks. I did finish the training route, 3 months later, at an average speed of 30mph, and I won two 10 mile, and one 25 mile time trials, plus my highest ever finish in a 140 klick road race, 4th. As a school kid in the late 1950s I was bike mad and would build my own bikes out of bikeshop leftovers. But the school run had to be on a conventional bike so mine was a BSA with steel mudguards, rod brakes three speed hub gears and a fat saddle, but I did fit a speedo to the front wheel. I rode it down High Barnet hill on the A1 to see if I could reach the 30-mph last reading. All went OK and I reached 30 mph but then a copper on a grey Velocete motorbike pulled alongside and signaled me to stop. I explained I was only trying to see if I could reach the full speed on the dial. After a safety talk, he let me go on my way. In those days before being allowed to cycle to school we had to pass The Cycling Proficency Test, bikes were tested at least once a term by the police. Any with faults had to be fixed before riding home, any serous defects the bike was impounded until parents collected it. All new pupils were taught the Green Cross Code by police in the first week of joining the Secondary Modern School and they would set up traffic lights, zebra crossings etc. to show the safe way to cross roads, walk on country road without pavements and told what to wear at night. Sadly, this practice has not continued and lots of parents don't bother teaching their loved one's road sense either.

    If the bicycle used in the video was travelling at 20mph, then this video does not show 'what 20 MPH looks like on a bicycle'. How can I be so confident? A gentle reminder for those unused to analytical interpretation of dashcam footage. These cameras generally feature extreme wide angle lenses. Such lenses result in footage that superficially resembles what one might actually see, except when watching the exact same scene with the naked-eye. a) With dashcam footage the apparent visual (angular) size of objects falls-off much more rapidly as the distance of the object from the camera lens increases, when compared with what would be seen by a person. b) One side effect of a) is that apparent distances from the camera seem much greater than they would appear to a human observer. c) *Speeds of objects, away from and towards the camera are greatly exaggerated. This means the camera on the bicycle appears to be moving considerably faster in the video than it was in reality.* How can we know what kind of lens was used, unless we know the details of the camera or we were present at the time? This is much easier for footage filmed in daylight conditions. It is much more difficult at night, unless there was adequate artificial light and suitable objects with vertical features to aid judgement by. Note: All objects are distorted: The human eye sees straight verticals and horizontals variously as vertical or horizontal and *straight*, while dashcam camera lenses distort everything, they only show straight verticals and horizontals as straight - but only if they pass through the centre of the lens' field of view, if they're off-centre, they will be curved, increasingly-so, as they approach the edges of the picture-frame. Edges of buildings, lamp posts road signs and bridges are useful to look for. For footage from a moving camera, lamp posts etc. will appear to curve towards the camera as the camera passes them. The upshot of that is that anyone with eyes to see can tell this video was shot through a wide-angle lens, but only when they know what to look for. For instance at 0.06, just before the cyclist passes the bollard in the middle of the path, there is a vertical post on the left that appears to bend alarmingly as the camera passes it. This is evidence that the camera has a wide-angle lens fitted which means the apparent speed in the video is greater than it would appear to the naked eye. Therefore, the title of this video is incorrect.

  • @razachaswills5076
    @razachaswills5076 Год назад

    What you must all remember is that modern cars have difficulty going as slow as 20mph. Driver has to keep using their brakes to maintain that slow speed. Which means their eyes are more on the speedometer than the road, thereby reducing safety not improving it. The very slowest speed which provides road safety and full driver attention, is 25 mph. Also at slow speeds, emissions are higher, as the engine is less efficient; the slow speed causes longer queues of traffic, so the pollution increases greatly in those slow speed areas. The whole plan is badly thought out and helps no one. It set back our historical progress as advanced human beings. Effectively we are going back to the days of horse and cart. What a crazy world we are living in!

      You don't push it, you pedal it! 🙂 Seriously though - I've been cycling for about 60 years, raced in my youth and commuted thousands of miles to work by bike over the years. Of course, I drive as well. You ask what the point of the video is. I'd say it's this: the big mistake made by many motorists is that they underestimate the speed at which cyclists can travel. I've had drivers cut across my front wheel as they pull across to park, and also come out of side junctions too quickly, nearly causing an accident. If you're turning right and a cyclist is approaching from the opposite direction, don't be impatient - just wait a few seconds until you've 'crossed' each other and the road is clear. I've had near misses in such situations. That said, cyclists also need to show consideration to motorists and pedestrians!
