Great video! It would be cool to see an up close of the caps, and how well they go on. Side note duco cement is pronounced like (duke-oh) not (duck-oh) 👍🏻
I herd copper works best . I also beleave the material off the striker on a pack of matches . Mix 50/50 with the match head. You will have a cap.with out that orange stain on you weapon
Heres an experiment for you.... instead of Duco cement, add a little laundry starch to the acetone. I recall a guy i used to know said it worked. Could you verify it please.
Paint stirring stick : Is for keeping the caps upright while adding the powder & acetone. I'm sure you can use any plastic / wood or metal item.....just drill holes in the holder slightly larger than the caps. A paint stirrer is thin enough to push the caps out the bottom when they are dry. A Lot of others use old primer boxes to hold the caps upright......hope that helps!
Aluminum cans work. Try using a hammer with a bit of weight to it but not a lot of weight. Rubber mallet will work but I use a regular metal nail hammer. U don’t want to tap them repeatedly like you did in this video. When you use aluminum just follow these steps. Line up the aluminum make sure it’s all the way pushed back against the metal wall in the punch and just tap the top piece not too hard but not too light. I find 2 taps with semi medium force works everytime to make a perfect cap. Never needed to double them up.. Two taps and they come out perfect every time for me. I actually like using the aluminum caps too, they bang nice and loud and they completely explode into fragments most of the time when you shoot them so you don’t have to worry about tilting the gun back and getting the cap off the nipple, the hammer and pressure does the job for you. It just shatters into a bunch of small pieces and flys off. That’s why the aluminum is convenient. When I first started making aluminum caps I was tapping them too light, and then too hard. It’s a perfect medium you have to find. Like I said two decent taps not hard but not super soft, will make a perfect cap one hard tap will make a undersized star shaped cap and two hard taps will crack the bottom of the cap that holds the good stuff
Huckoaks9180 there should be a CC (closed caption) button on the upper part of the screen that should transcribe the words as the video plays......hope that helps!
I was getting back into muzzleloading and found out no one in town carries percussion caps any more. You have to buy them online. i was thinking about making my own but really didn't know how. THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO!!! THANKS.
Bravo, excellent ,a well done job! Looks like you mastered the percussion cap making process. I've heard that people effectively use Nail Polish to seal in the primeall compond. The copper sheeting looks like the right material match. I am experimenting with using thicker aluminum from German Rugen Fish Fried Brat Herring can Lids and Guinness Stout cans. The newer Primeall compound is said to be better than the original. It also comes with a dispenser.
The EXACT copper I used was from Amazon .......K & S Metallic Copper Crafting Foil, 0.005" Thick x 12" Width x 30" Long, 1 Piece, Made in The USA, 6020 a.co/d/68Bhrse
I'm having a hard time finding duco cement so I'm hoping that you can give me a alternative brand or what is in the ingredients of the duco cement that you are using
I have only tried this with ducco cement (as ducco cement can be thinned with acetone). The "green" Ducco cement is available at Ace Hardware, Amazon & probably a lot of hobby shops)
Hey buddy I had wondered that myself with the acetone. Do you find that you have any primer clogging with the Ducco cement mixture? When are we going to get caps back on the market lol
From what I've heard, the prime all compound is pretty corrosive, I haven't had any issues with things clogging or gumming up ( I am not a high volume shooter though, 15-20 rounds then it's clean up time & done for the day). If it has clogged up someone's gun sooner, I haven't heard anything..........yet. Remington#10 caps are like Bigfoot, did they ever really exist???
For those people wanting to use aluminum cans, I found that doubling up on the aluminum can material makes good caps. I made up a half dozen aluminum caps when I was making another batch with copper and they worked just like the copper ones.
I found some cans have a thicker aluminum those are the better material. The thin aluminum rip easier lotta bad caps wasting time. Arizona cans seem thicker than others they work great
I'm just getting into black powder making all and man I'm glad I found your video. I tried making caps using aluminum cans and I could only get about 50% to turn out decent. I even annealed the aluminum and that didn't help. I found some 0.15mm copper which is just under 0.006 and it works great, I try to avoid Amazon. I even use your o-ring idea because it takes more effort to stamp out the copper and like you, I want to protect the punch and die. I use a syringe with a tiny needle, like others have stated, to add the acetone and glue mixture because it is easier to control. I made a cap holder using my 3d printer and I even made a tiny wedge shape scoop that works much better than the scoop provided with the Prime-all. Thanks for sharing your tips, they help make great caps.
@twl10101 I'm glad it's helping! Some people asked where I got the stuff ( Ace hardware, Walmart & Amazon, no affiliation with any of them.....just where I happened to find some of the stuff) Good Luck!
@@KM-xi6ud I understand completely. I know it's hard to avoid Amazon, but they screwed me over on a return and now with their $35 minimum for free shipping, unless you're a Prime member, really sucks for a lot of people. Stay safe.
Saw a cap punch/die set somebody made on a 3d printer. I wish I could get the dimensional data! I have mills and a lathe and would like to build a better mouse trap outa STEEL.
Cap Holder & Hole size: The holder was a paint stirring stick free from home depot with about 40 holes drilled in it (something a little thicker would probably be better). The hole size was 1/4". (all the way through it, so the caps can be pushed out the bottom after 24hrs). Nothing too tight or you have to beat them up to get them out. I'm sure others will chime in with better holders!
I am using this improved method and am loving it! Very nice quality/reliable homemade caps. Thanks for the video. In process of "mass" production creating a nice stash!
The EXACT copper I used was from Amazon .......K & S Metallic Copper Crafting Foil, 0.005" Thick x 12" Width x 30" Long, 1 Piece, Made in The USA, 6020 a.co/d/68Bhrse
Aluminum cans work, but in my '95 Pietta, I was having a problem with sometimes needing to hit the cap twice because the caps have 2 layers of of stiff aluminum on it's sides, unlike commercial caps that have only one layer. The problem was solved when I annealed the aluminum to make it much softer.
I use a diagonally cut plastic coffee sir to measure the powder into the cap. Also if you reload regular ammunition that uses large primers- the empty tray those primers come in is a perfect loading block for caps. The #10 cap maker makes better shaped caps but with modern thin aluminum cans it just tears them apart. Works great with aluminum baking pans though. The #11 cap maker works OK with the thin aluminum cans even if you don't actually want #11s. As the punch is the same size they make the caps taller by letting the tops be rounded off a bit, which puts less stress on the thin aluminum.
I’ve had fair results. Success rate about 70-80%. The big downside is they’re really corrosive and dirty. But it’s the difference between shooting and not shooting.
Great video! It would be cool to see an up close of the caps, and how well they go on. Side note duco cement is pronounced like (duke-oh) not (duck-oh) 👍🏻
Fill the pop running Dixie 4 nibble just Delta a.luquidater

Thank You! Now, if this works for me, I won't feel like I wasted a bunch of money.
"Prime - All ( repriming compound) " ......sold at many reloading/priming supply places
What is the powder mix? Just black powder? how much?

Got the 10 die to make the caps and they fit tight on the nipples. They won’t just fall off.
Can you sell me the mold?

have you ever tried aluminum disposable bake pans?

What is the paint stored stick? Explain please
He just drills holes in them so that it holds the cups vertically so he can fill it with the primer mix.
I've heard the hairspray works well but Ive never used it.

I just use my palm as a hammer it works fine and it’s actually faster I find saving the step of picking up mallet
:D this is the best method
Clear nail varnish in the same ratio with acetone works fine too.... keeps the cake in the caps a treat....

IS this posted anywhere in written form? I have trouble hearing all of this
Where do you get the explosive compound? is there a hazmat fee if ordering it online?
RL0810 Prime-All Compound for | $25.00 I purchased it from Dixie Gun Works (online) & NO HAZMAT FEE
I also purchased the RL5500 Tap-O-Cap #10 percussion cap maker from Dixie Gun Works also | $54.95

Never tried the shellac/alcohol method, but it does sound interesting!
I’m using shellac dissolved in isopropyl alcohol, works same good.

Ducco cement is nitrocellulose glue. You can purchase nitrocellulose lacquer in larger quantities if need.

Found the .005" x 6" x 100" annealed copper sheet roll on Amazon..will that thickness .005" work for number #10 caps?
@@michael184272 I don't have any experience with #10's, but since they are a little smaller in size, I would think 0.005 should work OK.
Have NOT tried them on paper Cartridges, Hopefully others can answer that one, sorry.

Great idea using an insulin needle! Sometimes my dropper spits out TOO MUCH.
