Simon Heffer on the Abdication Crisis + Freebiegate! | Ep.89 | The Scandal Mongers Podcast
Britain’s new Labour government has been shaken by stories of ‘gifted’ suits, penthouse flats and tickets for Taylor Swift concerts. Phil explains why this matters - and what it tells us about the problems of governing in the internet age.
Distinguished historian Simon Heffer then joins Phil to talk about his new book on Britain in the Interwar years, and gives us his very well-informed view about the greatest royal crisis of them all - the abdication of Edward VIII. It’s a fascinating conversation that anyone with an interest in Royal and British history - and the course of the Second World War - will not want to miss.
You can buy Simon's book, and all the books we feature on the podcast ...

Without falling into pop psychology, I would conjecture King Edward's wild sexual promiscuity stemmed from a composite of elements - parental rejection/indifference, sibling rivalry, frail stature and personality, dullard, and fear of future responsibility. ( Freudian analysis would not be appropriate for this platform. But as Martin Amis quipped in one of his novels, ' If size doesn't matter, why does everyone say size doesn't matter ! ' 😉 ) Died in Paris, France , a self imposed exile, an outcast. Oscar Wilde died in Paris, France, a self imposed exile, an outcast. The love that dare not speak its name ...

Simon gives a fleeting mention to yarns that were hawked around at my state secondary school. Stanley Baldwin compiled a china dossier detailing her ( Wallis ) behaviour in brothels. Hence the Shanghai Squeeze, Baltimore Grip , China Clinch or whatever you want to dub it. As far as history attests, there's little to no evidence. The Baldwin dossier never found.

Regarding your editorial, Phil: I think self interest over the good of a community is one of the dangers of our time. If wealthy and influential folk have agendas that conflict with good domestic/international policies and are given priority by elected officials it can be devastating. I liked Obama as a president, but he was weak in foreign policy and it caused global problems, as did Bush Jr.'s foreign policy mistakes due to his own personal interests. Simon Heffer is a captivating speaker. Great episode, as always.

I've watched several readings/reviews of Ask Not and look forward to a foreign and male perspective. I thought I knew most of the mountain of Kennedy dirt, but she unearths quite a lot more. Even to a Kennedy-hater like me, some of it comes off as anti-male: the women often lack agency. But I've also heard predators can sniff out a damaged or victim type; then there are the attractions of great wealth, status, and fame. I'm curious if she hoped to scuttle RFKjr's candidacy or just draft off its publicity.

    • @philmcraig

In the same way that The Five tries to give the victims of Jack the Ripper some agency and personality, Maureen writes much of the book from the POV of the women in a lightly novelised style - it’s rather effective IMO

Boris was popular because he had proved himself a brilliant London MAYOR, (does anyone remember when London was a vibrant safe city) in which we hosted the Olympics and a royal wedding. Khan is just a self serving, money grabbing, bone idle moron, just like Starmer, they are cut from the same cloth. Ideas for future shows. Maureen Callahan on her book "Ask not: The Kennedys and the Women they Destroyed". I am reading it at the moment and it is brilliant. I never liked the Kennedys from what I heard but could never understand why the American public adored them. The men were male chauvinist pigs at best and rapists and abusers at worst. Another good scandal to look at would be why Starmer did not Prosecute Fayed, or more to the point in light of recent events, how much was he paid to make it go away.
