HALF Italian | A Brother and Sister’s Journey of Reconnecting to their Italian Heritage. Born on each other’s half birthday - (Leo and Aquarius are polar opposites of each other) and half Italian by heritage - (full Italian mother). Our Italian heritage is half from the North of Italy and half from the South. This is our story of exploring our heritage and our journey towards dual citizenship. For the first half of our life - we took our Italian heritage for granted. Though we thoroughly enjoyed our mom's wonderful food, and thought her maiden name was funny, it wasn't until we were older that we began to connect with what it meant to be half Italian by blood. Are you half Italian? Join us!

Cucuzza | Our Family is Named After a Squash!
I'm just started learning Italian on Duolingo and am really liking it so far. I try to do 15 minutes a day. I already know Ecclesiastical Latin, so the pronunciation is the same.
It's been fascinating watching these videos as I am also descended from the Sabini and Scarpenti families of Montegroppo, although my ancestors went to England in the 1850s. My great, great grandfather was called Antonio Scarpenti, son of Giovanni Scarpenti.
Wow! That's pretty amazing! I'm curious how you found our video - were you searching for information about Montegroppo? Also, do you have a family tree listed on Ancestry.com?
@@halfitalian24 Hi, Yes I was searching for information and your videos came up. I do have a tree on ancestry, Wright family tree, managed by Lorna Wright. When I was searching ancestry, I found a photo of Luigi Scarpenti and he looks a lot like my grandfather. There is a definite family resemblence. I would love to be able to chat more with you about the family history and see if we can make a connection between us, as there were so few Scarpentis in Montegroppopo, it would be strange if we weren't related.
I was able to get dual citizenship from my great grandfathers from consulate of Philly - it's a gift and honor - good luck
That is the perfect description of how we feel - there is no entitlement, only a feeling of gratitude and hope to receive this as a gift and and honor! Thank you for your comment!
What's really sad is some of us are actually 1st generation Italian with both oarents, and now we are not able to do it because of the new ruling. Its extremely frustrating
I'm so sorry about this new issue changing things for you.
Has the minor issue affected you?
Because our ancestor never naturalized, so far we have not heard that it would change our case.
Hi I’ve only just found you on RUclips. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us. We have a similar issue with my husbands mum’s death certificate. It has her age listed rather than the year of marriage but her age is a year out. We didn’t change the certificate as in reality it’s about 10-12 days difference and hoping that the Italian consulate don’t calculate year of marriage to year of age. I was wondering if you have heard back from the lawyers working on behalf of you in Italy.
So far, we have had to send her death certificate back for an apostille - which delayed our process a bit, but we haven't heard any other details yet.
Hopefully once the appositle is completed and sent back it’s smooth sailing from there. My son had his appointment next Tuesday in Melbourne Australia. Fingerscrossed all goes well.
I am also half Italian (Sicilian)with a full blooded Sicilian mother. I was fortunate to have both of my maternal grandparents and their cultural influences most of my life. Italy is in my blood and my heart. I’ve dreamt of living there for decades. I flew to sickly in 2019 to meet one of my cousins. We went to the comune to get a certified copy of my grandfather’s birth record. I loved being in the land of my ancestors.
It is such a gift to feel connected to our ancestors before us, and to find connection to family in Italy.
I was on my way as well, but the minor rule circular change my ability to go through my grandfather. He was born in Palermo and came to the US at 14. He naturalized when my mother was 3, which is now not acceptable. So I will attempt to go through my grandmother. To my knowledge she never naturalized; however, upon my grandfather’s death, she somehow got a ssn and was able to collect my grandfather’s social security. I’m stalled at the moment, as well as frustrated.
The process is slow and long and daunting. I'm sorry about how this new 'minor' issue has changed so much for so many...
@ I was almost there. Ready to have my documents translated and apostilled. Now I will try through my maternal grandmother. I’ve been doing this on and off since 2019.
At around 5:00, you talked about how your great-granpa never became an American citizen and that his children were automatically american-italian. Do you mean he had children in the United States and they were born Italian and American? Or did his children also come to the U.S. with him? I am wondering because my mother's great-grandma came from Sicily to Brazil and we don't know if she had kids with an Italian person or not. She had my mother's grandpa around 1920s or so I believe in Brazil. My uncle is currently in the process of getting this figured out as he paid for an agency to look into it and start the process, but I wanted to get info from you since you did it already.
Because our great-grandfather never naturalized, our grandparents were born in America to an Italian citizen. We are the last in our family line who can claim this Italian-American dual citizenship. Our. mom is 100% Italian - all her ancestors are 100% Italian - but she and her parents were born in America.
Question: We’re you required to have your CONE apostille too? Thank you.
Yes, we needed an apostille for the CONE as well.
Thank you! ❤🙏
Have all my documents just waiting on my GGM CONE... just ordered it and hate that I have to wait 8+ months!! Oh well, all part of the process I guess.. Good luck!
Oh, I hope it doesn't take that long for you. Ours came quicker than that! Best of luck!
what an amazing way to spend a birthday, a very pretty place !
It really is a beautiful part of Italy!
My wife and I were planning a visit to Italy in 2020... e' successa una piccola cosa con il nome coronavirus. I have a 5 year streak on Duolingo and have completed the Italian course. I'm by no means an expert Italian speaker. When people ask me if I know Italian, I say that I'm LEARNING Italian. What I found helpful was to work DAILY on your lessons on Duolingo and search out other resources. There are a TON of free Italian learning resources on the Web. Memrise, Online Italian Club, ITalianPod101, and my favorite, Italian Teacher Valentina. This year, we finally made it to Italy. Apart from mastering the Italian train system*, I found out that I could understand, and more importantly, be understood by Italian speakers. The trip was a solid rounding of what I had worked on for 5 years... I loved walking through the crowds and picking up bits of daily life con il mio orecchio italiano. I envy you for having a path to Italian citizenship! Good work on your learning journey, and keep it up! * I kill me... the trains get there when they get there, OK??
I like Sarah's methodical approach, she's very tidy.
Luke is actually much more organized than I am, but thanks! I'll take it! ;) - S
Did you need to get 2 copies of each document for you and your brother? I’m starting this process with my sister :). And did you make appointments prior to going to city hall?
Because we submitted ours in Italy using a lawyer and a no-appointment case, we only needed one copy of each essential document. We did not need an appointment in San Francisco's city hall to access birth records. Good luck to you and your sister!
Why don’t you just stay where you are? Italy is going down hill.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 it seems to be the right choice for someone
In order to file a 1948 case in Italy, you also have to show that there is no other viable line.
E' una buona idea che tu intendi imparare l ' Italiano ! Hai perfettamente ragione questa lingua e' bellissima! Complimenti! E complimenti anche per la tua volonta di diventare cittadino Italiano ! A proposito ci siete riusciti ?!
Grazie! Stiamo ancora aspettando. I nostri documenti sono in Italia per la revisione.
There are potentially around 80 million descendants of Italians who emigrated to various countries. The volume of requests for de jure sanguinis citizenship is putting consulates and public offices in crisis. Simply put, there are less than 59 million of us and 40% of us pay 70% of the taxes that support our state. We are already harassed now. We must also consider that once citizens you would be entitled to all the services recognized by the Italian State for which we pay a high percentage of our annual income. Now imagine what would happen to the state budget and how many more taxes we would have to pay to guarantee you, who don't pay them, all the services you are entitled to.
2:05 I have a question about the Nara Docs, so according to the NY Consulate, the Nara docs is required in addition to the USCIS Cone as per their application instructions. Currently, Nara is relocating their NY records between Philadelphia and Kansas City. I was wondering if our application would be accepted by the consulate if I were to only submit the Cone letter from USCIS 1:53
This is a good question. I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you!
What are Nara docs?
I have all my paperwork ready, and have been on the NYC waitlist for almost two years. What is the cost of this service?
It all depends upon how many individuals are applying. It begins at around 4,500 euro for the main applicant, but each additional family member is 700 for adults, 500 for children.
I heard there is a company in Italy to gather all the documents. Have you come across them? It seems you were able to do the search yourself but we are not.thanks
That would be my website and my channel
Please be careful and do your research before trusting companies who offer services in Italy. Unfortunately we can only recommend who we have worked with so far. Smart Move Italy is trustworthy.
Great idea
It was a fun project!
I moved to Italy in May of 2018 and a year later in June I became an Italian citizen. Usually doesn’t take that long but the town I moved in didn’t have a clue on what to do and the guy in charge took several times sick leave. Wince then I’m living !La Dolce Vita,
Congratulations!
Good luck to you. I am also trying to learn Italian, but I haven't been as hard-working as the two of you. What I have been doing for the past year is watching a lot of movies and TV shows in Italian. Netflix has quite a bit, but I really like the streaming site called MHz Choice which has a ton of TV shows from around the world, including Italy. Don Matteo is a show on it that ran for 13 seasons in Italy with 265 episodes. It's about a priest who helps the local police solve murders, but it really is a comedy and something that I find funny. As a result, I keep watching new episodes almost every day. I'm almost done with season 7 as I write this. The site provides English subtitles, and the Italian that is spoken is traditional and fairly easy to follow, although I still depend on the subtitles more than I wish I did. You learn the language, in part, because we only commonly use less than 5,000 words in normal conversation, and when you hear the same words and phrases spoken over and over again on a TV show, it helps them to stick. I usually watch one or two episodes every evening. I enjoy learning that way, but I don't know how many people are familiar with MHz Choice. It has been helpful to me, and they usually have a Black Friday sale which makes an annual membership pretty inexpensive. Because my citizenship blood line is a 1948 case, I have not had to deal with the Italian consulates in the U.S. I hope your efforts to circumvent that logjam by petitioning a court in Italy are successful. All the best from Minnesota!
una sola domanda?( e la scrivo in italiano) ma la lingua? la conoscete?🤔
Stiamo imparando! poco a poco...
The consulate websites work, they’re just overwhelmed with people wanting an appointment
Yes, we were surprised by how many!
This "naturalised" or not, this drives me insane. Just like the 1 euro houses, Italy, you want people or not? You need to be doing the "bend over backwards" to get people to go live there, you want them or not? And so what if people naturalized or not, take into consideration people were doing what they could to survive. You created Mussolini, now right your wrongs Italy, let people move there with ease, and the rest of the world just might forgive you for changing sides in both world wars is all.
The ignorance about history is staggering. Please do no come at least until you have read some history book.
@@lenase7396I was going to write the same
Good luck. I’ve been studying for just over a year and am finishing the A2 course. I recommend joining an online class to learn the basics. The course I’m in focuses on conversation and when I was recently in Italy, I could do basic things like order in a restaurant or buy something in a shop. Everything you are currently doing is fine and will help you learn. One tip: spend some time learning how to pronounce the words. When you say “ buon giorno” it sounds like you are saying “bone jur-no”. Check out some of the videos where they teach pronunciation. Buon studio!📖
Thanks for the encouragement and great tips!

Grazie per questa correzione!
Ciao, siete bravi con l'italiano, continuate così molto bene, in bocca al lupo per la vostra cittadinanza italiana, saluti da Pistoia 👍
This was great, I also love learning Italian. Another thing we've done that's really fun is we watched Sanremo Music Festival last year and started listening to music from those artists and grew from there. At this point I almost exclusively listen to music in Italian, there are some really amazing artists that we don't hear about normally in the US.
Oh some recommendations! Really love these artists so far but there are many others: - La Rappresentante di Lista - Santi Francesi - Ghali
We’re looking for an Italian lawyer for a potential no appt case too! How is smart move Italy so far? Are they any good?
We don't have much to compare them to - however we have been pleased so far!
Yeah, we’re really bummed because my wife’s grandfather naturalized a year after her uncle was born but before her father was born.
That is frustrating!
Is your case negatively affected by the “minor issue” in which your ancestor was a minor child when either of their parents naturalized?
Hello, the only minor issue we were worried about was that there was a slight date discrepancy on one of the birth certificates. We are able to qualify for dual citizenship because our great grandfather who was born in Italy, immigrated here and never naturalized. His children - through to us - all qualify.
@@halfitalian24 that’s great news that your case is simplified by having no persons in your line who naturalized! Hopefully, your date discrepancy can be explained or corrected. I have a 1948 case with no naturalizations and will be filing my case when my 28 documents are done being translated.
What are the CONE certifications?
CONE stands for Certificate Of Non Existence. It is a document issued from the Federal Immigration department USCIS which shows that a person never naturalized - that there is no record of naturalization on file.
@@halfitalian24 Thank you for responding so quickly. How do you request this? I have already filed an index search with the USCIS for my grandmother whom , I believe, never naturalized, because she didn’t learn to speak English. Is that the way to get a CONE? Or is there something else that I have to do? My grandfather did naturalize, officially in 1944, when my mother was only 18 years old. I am affected by the “minor issue”. I happen to be three quarters Italian. Both my mother’s parents were born in Torretta, Sicily, with last names Candela and Troia. My father’s mother is Italian, last name Pellegrino, but she was born in Marseille, France. I just discovered your videos a few days ago. Nice work…..keep it going! Thanks again!
@@halfitalian24, Great video! Now that you’ve applied through in the Italian court, does the CONE certificate need to be sent out for apostille too? Thanks….
Good luck 1948 cases are being thrown out left and right. Italy had a major ruling against it recently and honestly are looking to revamp their laws so this system isn’t as accessible as it’s been to distant relatives.
Yes. We are keeping tabs on this as well. So far, we don't see the recent ruling affecting our case - but there are no guarantees!
Super exciting. I am in the same exact boat going through my GGF with CONE and trying for over a year to get an appointment. I decided to go through an Italian lawyer to submit my case and it should be sent to the court in the next few weeks. Collecting the documents wasn't too bad or long and no 1948 or minor issues but the appointment lottery is just insane. Looking to move to the EU in 26 and the timeline even after case is submitted will be close so trying to stay patient. I wish you both the best of luck and smooth process.
Yes, there is so much patience involved! It feels like an honor that this is even possible for us, which helps with the waiting. May your process go smoothly as well. Thanks for following our journey!
Thank you for your inspiring video. We will also be travelling from Canada to Italy for the 1st time in June to discover my husband’s relatives and the village where they lived. Apparently, 11 generations are from the 1 little village in Rimini. We hope to make great connections and maybe purchase a part-time home either in the village or around it in our future!
May your journey be a wonderful one! There is nothing like stepping foot on Italian soil and walking the streets which your family once walked. Sending our best to you for a beautiful, connective time there. Thank you for following along with our journey!
Appointments are impossible in Philadelphia. Finally hired a lawyer to do exactly what you are doing.
Yes, unfortunately the consulate system doesn't seem to be working. Now that we know all that is involved with the legal documents and such, we are grateful to have professionals helping us to be prepared.
Best of luck to you!
Your Duolingo name please?
Great grandfather? I got my citizenship because my father was an Italian. Sorry, I think a great grandfather is too far removed.
Our mother is full Italian by blood.
@@halfitalian24 unless they have changed the way test for citizenship, the test when I applied was that a parent was not naturalised at the time of your birth. My father was an Italian, having never taken citizenship in Australia. This seems like a fair test to me because my father wanted to remain an Italian and not relinquish his birthright. My mother was German “by blood” because my grandfather was German. It doesn’t mean I can get German citizenship.
Italy allows citizenship by descent even up to great grandparent. As long as the great grandparent was born after 1861
Change RUclips Channel name! Name it "Full Italian"!!! Very nice shots, this channel will grow a lot. Ben fatto!!! Bravi!!!
