The University of Pittsburgh team launched a light sensor balloon prior to totality in the April 8th, 2024 total solar eclipse in Concan, TX. A radiosonde (weather) balloon was launched about 30-40 seconds later. This video shows the radiosonde balloon as recorded by the camera on the light sensor balloon. Balloon 2 Totality
Просмотров 333 месяца назад
Totality as recorded by the camera on our second light senor balloon. Totality occurred when the balloon was around 20100 m (66,000 ft.). The view is straight up, and the small white dot near the Sun (roughly 10 o'clock position) is either Jupiter or our first light sensor balloon which was about 15,000 feet higher.

    Wow a 360 video. Was thinking this is really stable for a balloon cam, but I can't really see the shadow. Then realized I could move and see whatever I wanted. Very cool! Thanks

    Do you know how high your balloon was flying at the time of totality? I was flying a drone at that time at about 3500 ft. I thought I'd be able to see the edge of the shadow approaching like in this video but no, at that altitude you can only see the surroundings get gradually darker.

      The first balloon was around 81,000 ft. and the second (this video) around 66,000 ft.

      Actually, if you look up at 1:15:32, the eclipse will occasionally pop out from behind the white balloon into view, along with Venus, until 1:18:43. Another object of curiosity is the jet airliner in view at 23:50 and heard at 24:21; its smoke trail still lingers above the horizon until 30:22.

    • @russellclark3570
      @russellclark3570 9 месяцев назад

      Actually, the camera isn't stable. It was attached to the red box which you can see moving around quite a bit. Because it is a 360 degree camera though the software stabilizes the image.
