The Balao-class submarine USS Skate (SS 305) got underway from Pearl Harbor for her seventh war patrol on 11 April 1945, to form a coordinated attack group with other submarines and patrol in the Sea of Japan. On the morning of 10 June, she encountered I-122, a Japanese submarine on the surface returning to port. As the enemy crossed her bow, Skate launched two torpedoes with two hits, sinking the target. All hands were lost on I-122. Two days later, while off the Nanto Peninsula, she evaded gunfire of enemy ships and an attack by an enemy escort to sink three cargo ships, taking two prisoners (shown here). Skate terminated her seventh war patrol at Pearl Harbor on 4 July 1945.

Bonefish with a crew of 53 men was lost on 18 June 1945 as part of operation Barney....last sub lost in WW2....over 50 sunk with a loss of 3418 men!

I very much enjoy this series. My generation! I was born 1944. I'm wondering if the scenes are the actual films of the USS Squailfish?

The show "Silent Service" shows the real risks that WW2 subs faced...50 plus subs lost...3490 men killed.

Never made clear why the crew in the engine room...(tomb) died while the 33 sailors in the torpedo room survived..😢

You answered my question. The 2 propellers at driven by 4 election motor powered by generators, powered by 4 diesel engines. When submerged without snorkel air the propellers a driven by elector motor power by batteries. How long did it take a charge a low battery?

Intel was gathered from advances in torpedoes developed in the 1930's. Seems like Japan opted for the M95, a total success with a range of over 9000 yards at a speed of 45mph powered by hydrogen peroxide.

The Japanese M93 torpedo had a range of 13000 yards going 45 knots using hydrogen peroxide as fuel.

Colorized film didn't come about until the '60's, so thank you to whomever took the time to colorize this footage. Many do not realize some of the missions' submarines undertook besides hunting enemy ships and submarines. Watch the TV series, "Hell Below" and you'll hear some of these other types of missions carried out by submarine captains and commanders. One mission included firing rockets from the bow of the sub to attack an enemy coastline. Another took the explosives to scuttle the boat in case of attack and sent men ashore to dig under a railroad track and set a pressure sensitive trigger to blow up the track and derail a train delivering supplies. Then you had captains such as Richard "Dick" O'Kane that would slip past enemy convoy escorts and take his sub into the very middle of the convoy, turn sideways and fire every torpedo available, then slip out to safety in the confusion after sinking several ships. Also watch the movie "Das Boot" (The Boat) with the original German voices and the English subtitles. The movie loses a lot of authenticity with the English voice-over.

This looks like the Balao SS 285. I say that because my Dad was only on the Balao and I see him in three or four shots.

But why did they change the name of the sub and the crew? They didn't do that on other episodes. Did their message get through? Was this Dykers' boat?

And here i thought haircuts in the desert was a bummer!

I have watched each and every episode of this series and I am 40 years old, so I wasn't even alive when this show was aired, but I love it just the same. Thank you!

Man, Thompkins just wanted the crew to respect him, and I know that feeling all too well, but when it comes to duty and dedication to protect your fellow crewmen, heroism comes in some of the strangest ways. Your body just commands you to do the right thing. I have saved a life before, but it was in conjunction with a good friend who was trained on how to deal with such situations. I am no hero, and I don't feel like one, but hearing that the man that we saved lived to tell the tale was praise enough for me. God works in mysterious ways, and he empowers us to do our best in the face of adversity.

This was one of the absolute best series of television shows ever produced. Too bad it only lived a short life. It represents our US Navy and our Silent Service better than most modern shows.

I'm glad to see these on RUclips. As a young kid I would watch this, and "Victory At Sea" with 26 episodes also available on YT. Thanks!!

My dad was the EC on the Catfish from 1945 til 1953! He's the curley haired blonde guy!

Fred Warder, the captain of the Sea Wolf became ComSubLant (commander submarines Atlantic Ocean as admiral. Known to his crew and hated by him was his nickname "Fearless Freddie". He was a humble and honorable man who believed in the humanity of everyone including the enemy. Fred received a 5 column head obituary in the NY Times and Washington Post when he died. I was honored to call him my friend. We met in Orlando Florida, 1985. I was ex-Navy radioman, he was Rear Admiral, retired.
