    Would this work on thick cargo pants? I need to taper them in at the hem, but the pockets on knee mean i cant! I think this may be the best option but im worried its going to look bunchy and weird. Its a good techinque because i wouldnt need to hem AND taper. hmm.

      Without seeing the pants, I cannot say for sure if this is the best technique for your specific situation. You could follow this tutorial but instead of pulling the elastic tight at the ankle, you could make it more relaxed around the ankle. That may help you to narrow the pant hem without tapering the pant leg side seams.

    One of my New Year’s resolution-learning to sew! I think I need to start with something easier than hemming, and get comfortable with my future sewing machine. What’s a good, user friendly, versatile and economic sewing machine you recommend for beginners?

    • @TheCreativeSewist
      @TheCreativeSewist 8 месяцев назад

      Hello! There are many different makes/models of sewing machines on the market and they range in price from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. I would suggest visiting a few different sewing machine retailers and testing out different machines before purchasing one. Once you have experience with different makes, you will probably prefer one brand to another (which is totally normal). As a beginner, it's very important to find a retailer that offers 'service and support after the sale.' Sewing machine retailers can answer machine questions quickly and walk you thru a problem when you get stuck. Having a great support team is essential when learning to sew. Some retailers offer classes that are fabulous ways to learn new sewing techniques and broaden your knowledge of your machine.

      Thank you for your question. Yes, you can mark the inside seam on the frontside. It's important that you take an equal amount of fabric from both seams. The pants in the video had VERY wide legs and it was easier to show the process in the screen by folding over the pant leg. Hope this helps.

    • @TheCreativeSewist
      @TheCreativeSewist Год назад

      @@chadsexinton thank you for the additional information. The best way to mark the hem is to ask a friend for some help. First put on the jeans with the pair of shoes you will wear with them. Next, ask your friend to mark the hem for you. The easiest way to do this is for your friend to measure from the floor and place a straight pin at the desired hem length. For example, if you think the jeans look best 1 inch from the ground, then place straight pins 1 inch from the floor around the ENTIRE pant leg hem. Pins do not need to touch but place them close enough that you can see this new line. Once you have both pant legs marked, carefully take them off. Turn them inside out. At your ironing board, carefully slip the lower pant leg opening over a sleeve press board. (If you don’t have one, you can roll up a towel and use that). Carefully fold up the pant leg and use the pins as a guide for your new hem. Pin the pant leg up once you have it positioned. Press along the new hem line. Make sure you press around the entire hem. Repeat process on the other pant leg. Before cutting excess fabric, it’s best to try on the pants and make sure the hem looks correct. If it doesn’t, adjust as necessary. Once the hems look correct, go ahead and finish hemming the pants as demonstrated in the video. If you are hemming jeans, you will need a jeans needle for your sewing machine and denim thread. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

    • @chadsexinton
      @chadsexinton Год назад

      @@TheCreativeSewist I did most of that except the pinning. The pressed hem doesn't move its just that when I sew it goes bend somehow. Thanks for your help.

    • @TheCreativeSewist
      @TheCreativeSewist Год назад

      @@chadsexinton that sounds like the tension is off on your sewing machine. If you haven’t had the machine serviced within the last year, you may want to take it to a sewing machine repairman. The fabric should feed evenly under the feed dogs and your machine may need adjusted.

    I couldn't see the crotch I guess you have to keep it the same and must taper to it?

    • @TheCreativeSewist
      @TheCreativeSewist Год назад

      Taper your new seam to the crotch. You can end it just below the seam intersection (where the pant legs meet) if that is easier for you. The most important thing is to make sure you gradually taper the seam. That way it will lay neater on the body and not appear to be altered. If you have any other questions, please ask. I'll do my best to help you. Thank you for your question.

    A good simple, and we'll explained tutorial, thanks for not using same colored fabric as dress for the casing. This way it was easy to tell where you were sewing. Is 3/4 " elastic the best size to use for waistline application? Thank you for sharing your skills.

    • @TheCreativeSewist
      @TheCreativeSewist 2 года назад

      @JoJo Sewist Thank you for your kind words! I'm happy to hear that this tutorial helped you. In this example, I used 3/4" wide elastic; however, if you wanted a narrower waistline, you could use 1/2" wide elastic. I didn't want a wide waistline so I decided on the 3/4" width elastic. Also, if you look at most belts sold for ladies' dresses, they are around 1" wide, so they would cover the casing if you decided to coordinate a belt with your dress.

    Excellent easy to follow tutorial. My question is: How do I taper pant legs that have a horizontal and vertical box design and have the lines look even when worn?

    • @TheCreativeSewist
      @TheCreativeSewist 3 года назад

      Thank you for taking time to comment! Matching a repeat design can be tricky when tapering pant legs and requires additional prepwork prior to sewing. If you are tapering a small amount, it's easier to match up the design, but if you are removing a large amount of fabric, it can be tricky. I would suggest marking your taper line on one pant leg and then placing a pin at the bottom of each box element to hold the fabric in place while you sew. You may need to adjust the fabric as you pin down the leg to ensure that the design elements are lined up. Once you have one leg completed, move the second pant leg and repeat the process. You can then slowly sew your new seam and remove the pins as you sew. I also need to mention that unfortunately, not all patterns can be matched when altering so you may need to offset the pattern to ensure that you maintain the overall fit and design of the pants. If you are unable to line up the design, consider adding an additional design element like a thin piping or decorative trim that you can place over the seam to conceal the pattern offset. Hope this helps.
