What ill always remember about this game also is how Willie Randolph took Piazza out of the game when Piazza still had one more plate appearance (either bottom of the 8th or bottom of the 9th). Piazza could have hit a home run in his final plate appearance as a Mets player (and knowing Piazza and how the dramatics always followed him, it was possible). But Randolph just took Piazza out of the game in the top of the 8th inning when Piazza was catching behind the plate, that it caught Piazza by surprise that he was taken out of the game. Even the Mets fans in Shea were confused as to what was happening, and once they realized that Piazza was being replaced, Mets fans started booing. I have no idea what Randolph was thinking when he did that. It was a meaningless game 162 between two teams thinking of vacation and nothing to play for, and the Mets were losing big already, so just let Piazza hit one final time with a standing ovation and with the crowd cheering.

@obiwanobiwan13. I have been watching and studying baseball since 1982. I'd say he is the best hitter of all-time in my book because he had plate discipline to hit good pitches and the timing to hit bad pitches, way outside and over his head with a level swing. Even on outs, he hit line shots. Had he played a position besides catcher and concentrated on hitting, he would hit 80 homers a season and hit .400. But he got bored when he didn't catch and didn't hit well.

Randolph will always live in infamy as far as I'm concerned. Forget his choice to say "New York fans are the greatest fans in the world," during the pregame video segment rather than "Mets fans are the greatest fans in the world," (he was always a Yankee at heart), his not allowing Mike one last at bat is a carnal sin. Piazza would have batted once more, but Willie replaced him before the game was over. Even Piazza was baffled by this managerial move, but was too classy to call Willie out on it

The "Franchise" catcher he became my favorite Mets it used to be Keith Hernandez until he got here

He's definitely a first ballot HOFer, most HRs by a catcher, best hitting catcher ever, the best offensive seasons ever by a catcher, led the Mets to a pennant, the 9/11 homer... I have to believe he'll go in as a Met- he had his few biggest stat seasons in LA, but more HRs with the Mets, broke the Catcher HR record with the Mets, led them to a pennant, BELOVED in NY (I'd go so far as to say he's the Mets' Jeter, both are THAT loved and THAT great) AND the 9/11 homer's HUGE... MIKE A MET!

yep and you hear mets fan in philly too, i love how we pretty much sell out their stadium everytime we play them.. its always a home game when we play philly!
