Golden Stonefly, How to tie simple for Steelhead
Thanks a lot! Hope you land lunkers on it! And it’s heavy enough you can throw it with a spinning rod if you like.
Definitely going to be using it for jigging smallmouth on my 8wt, one of the coolest bass bugs I’ve seen in a while.
If you get some nice fish on it, post them to Facebook or Insta and tag me so I can see them!
Love this tie, the horseshoe is such a great idea.
Yeah I am going to do that today. This should be fun and look very cool. I'm going to use a champagne cork
Good luck!
Dude that is just flipping cool! Thanks!
No problem! Glad you liked it. I have since learned that a heat gun will melt the glue and allow you to pulll the cap off and clean out the end a little easier.
That’s incredibly simple but looks great. Will definitely be trying these.
Yes, you hit the nail in the head, very simple to tie, but casts a tasty profile to the fish. They work great in brown, olive and chartreuse as well as other colors.
Always quality videos.
Thank you very much. It’s actually why I started making videos. It’s so frustrating to watch videos, by even famous tiers, that don’t tell you anything. You just watch them tie. No explanation as to why each step is done how it is. And often what they do say is not helpful…. So I started making videos for people who actually want to learn something.
I love when people ask for “recipes” as though they’re baking a cake. I get it, but it’s always funny to me.
definitely a tougher zonker although mine are lost due to snags on the bottom long before they fall apart. lol
Yeah. That’s other part of this tying strategy; it’s pretty easy to tie, so I don’t mind fishing them like I want to lose them.
This is how I broke my thread starter.
Hahaaa!! Yup. Done that a few times. Not easy to get exact amount of yarn that goes through the pen easily enough but is not so little that the eggs don’t hold their shape. I have since switched to using this braided beading wire from the craft store to pull the yarn. It doesn’t break. Same stuff as fly fishing pike leader material.
Great video
Thanks a lot! I started making videos because so many don’t really explain anything useful about how to actually tie. Glad you found it helpful! Feel free to share it!!
Well Done, i need a good pattern to throw at the trout where I'm at. This looks like the ticket. Ty Ty
Let me know how you do with it!
Great video! Do you ever add a bead to your egg pattern.
I have video on making fly with just a bead but have not tried adding a plastic or metal bead to a tied egg. Does it work?
@@pauldavidbinkley I’ll let you know. I’m going salmon fishing in Sept. in Michigan. A deep fast river. I’m hoping they get down fast, behind a weighted streamer.
Nice. I’ll be on the PM, the Betsie and the Platt the last weekend of Sept into Oct. maybe I’ll try the same. Though I usually just fish black egg sucking leach for Kings as they seem to really whack black streamers every year, and when I fish eggs I tend to catch baby steelhead and resident browns. But when the going gets tough I def switch to an egg patter and you’re right the rivers up there have a good flow to them, hard to get down in such a short deep drift. Thanks for the suggestion!
I’ll be on the PM Sept. 8-12!!
Great fly and video. Thank you.
You are very welcome! Glad you liked it. Hope it inspires you get creative at the bench! Feel free to share a link to my vid anywhere you want!
Good video, except, you didn't "restore" anything. You just cleaned them. I thought you were going to remove old, worn-out or cracking corks.
The next step: Clean out the cork pits, lightly sand, and fill the pits with quality filler. Finally, apply cork seal. Then you are done. Ron U.
Good tips! Never heard of cork seal. Is that like Thompsons water seal?
Paul...The Erie Shiner is a weight forward spinner that was originally registered with a US patent in 1986 and is presently trademarked. It also formerly was the recipient of ICAST's Best spinner award. You can change your name to the "Lake Erie Shiner" to avoid infringement.
Thanks for the tip!
Very difficult to see the fly and your work. Great film of you and your beard.
Yes, I know. Made that a long time ago. Didn’t have a very good camera for closeups. But at least you got to see my beard….
Fill your sink with water and place the ziplock bag of fish under the water so only top portion sticks out then seal. Best way to remove air and no mess.
I have done that also. You’re right that works pretty good!!
Hey, thanks for your recipe. Looks simple and the filet looks delicious. I will give it a shot. Love the Manhattan touch too...
Thanks a lot! Hope you love it!!

Nice pattern
Nice one dude!
Really fun videos, have you thought about doing a podcast cast?say with Tom rosenbaum?
That would be an honor!
very cool idea. thank you for the knowledge. I really appreciate it.
Great design! This should work great in newer suv’s which was the problem I was trying to figure out. Without the rear coat hooks it has been a challenge. I will definitely give this a try!
Good luck to you. Very convenient to have the rods in one piece while out fishing.
Fly tying with Jesus. 😇
Great tutorial
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
You’re very welcome!
@ 1:36 that's what she said 😁
Lol. But it might be too skinny
You’re due for some new content if you have time. Miss listening to the knowledge you have to give. Cool flies too. We all get busy sometimes tho. Hope you’re doing well
Hey thanks! I been working a lot. You’re right though. Need to make some more content. Thanks for the encouragement
Thank you for the useful tips..The Dude abides!
You’re very welcome!
Nice job on the egg fly pattern. I appreciate you explaining why you do certain steps instead of just ripping through it.
Thanks a lot. That’s actually why I started making videos. I was tired of watching one’s that don’t really tell you much and I figured others may feel that way too.
Just made your tool and I love it. I hate to waste material, expensive or otherwise. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.
Super glad it’s working for you! And I too love the very little waste. Hate it when my scrap bin is more full than my fly box!
It still baffles me why the eyes are tied in at the tail of the pattern. I always tie mine in near the head. What you have done makes no sense to me.
I don’t think of them eyes so much as ballast. I suppose you can place them anywhere you want. I choose to put them at the tail for two reasons. I think the motion when stripping in looks pretty realistic with the weight at the tail, and secondly I like the way the body of the fly tends to float upright and buoyant looking when resting on the bottom. I tend to fish rocky streams. Maybe on flat bottom it would work as well anywhere on the fly
Great tip! Best thing is that it doesn't seem to remove any cork, which a scouring pad might do.
It's the dude!
The Dude abides.
Dude you are like a bob ross but for fishing love it man keep up the videos and content coming
Thanks! I got tired of watching super fast tying videos that don’t give any of the reasoning for the method. So I decided to make the kinds of videos I want to watch! Thanks for enjoying them
Great tip! I owe you a Kailua & cream. Cheers 🥂
I actually found a tool at a craft store that I can use just like the pen. One end is open wide and tapers to the front. It also has a hook for pulling the material through the tool...
I’m going to have to go fishing in Colorado with you sometime, cousin Paul. I used to live there-I’ve always dreamed of fly fishing in the mountain lakes. Ever since “A River Runs Through It” become my 2nd favorite movie! Love your channel!
Thank you so much! I would love to visit and fish with you!!!
Right on! If you boil the corks first they'll swell back to their original size.
Boiled cork! Yummie vegan tea.
Great job with the video. Good pattern and useful tool. Thanks man.
Works great on California Delta strippers and bass.
Fine grit sanding block takes 30 seconds
you are a natural teacher. thx.
Effective, but way to much talking for a simple egg tutorial.
Jane Friend thanks for listening. The amount of talking is very deliberate. You can watch a thousand one minute videos that tell you nothing. My niche is to inform the listener. Plenty of people would love to have someone explain why a certain strategy is desirable, and not just watch speed- glory vids of great tiers wanting to make others feel inadequate or in experienced. Please don’t watch any other of my videos if you are a fan of speed tying.
Outstanding! Thank you!
completely random but you should work as a VO artist
Thanks! I have actually done some VO for my employer, Honda but never for additional income. I wold like to though. So if you have any contacts....
