Busoni made another set of recordings in 1919 and HATED the results. If they were never copied down from the masters, they were lost in a fire.

At 8:43 he improvises a cadence to lead into the etude, I miss when pianists used to add these small touches to pieces

it is incredible how Busoni follows his own indications of pace and agogic to the letter in the pieces from the Well-Tempered Clavier. they are indications very similar to those of the great romantic school of Bach editions, in Italy for example carried forward by the magnificent edition by Bruno Mugellini. Today it would no longer be accepted to play Bach like this, however the Maestro's musicality emerges forcefully; it is an orchestral sound that is difficult to find today and which explains the spirit of Bach's music better than many sloppy performances.

He also has 1919 recordings where he not only recorded the pieces in this video but also a lot of other pieces including some Liszt-Paganini Etudes, Faust Waltz, some Mozart and others but these are lost (or were destroyed in the Columbia Fire).

What happens with Busoni is that his playing adapts perfectly to the composer's style. But his most flawless feature is certainly the cleanliness and sharpness of his contrapuntal playing. Look at how distinct the sounds are in the first two Bach pieces, especially in the fugue and the second piece. You can hardly understand that it was made by a two-handed pianist. In Chopin pieces, the contrast and rubato are equally balanced and carry Chopin's spirit. Rather than carrying German rigidity, they show Chopin's French-like style. For example, the transition between the 7th Prelude and the etude is magnificent. It is very breathable, it flows like water. The Liszt piece also has the best Liszt vibe possible, it never loses its Hungarian vibe. This is real pianism!

The german Style of playing was more like playing with extreme rubato. It was the Wagnerian school of conducting which was lead by Furtwängler in the early 20th Century. Toscanini was known for more rigidity.
