Alex is Creating (Finally!)
Добавлен 25 мар 2015
I want proof that someone (me!) can go from having never made art, to making great art. I want proof that I am not "less than" my creative heroes!!! Exclamation marks!!
My whole life I've been super passionate about art (especially music), and all my heroes are creatives. But creativity is a daunting field, and I've always felt like "I guess I'm not special like them". So I spent 10 years in STEM - bioengineering Master's degree, programming, internal ops at startups, etc
But, I'm now 28, and my passion for art has been the only constant in my life. And my heroes were terrible once too! Kendrick Lamar had a bunch of average mixtapes before getting really good. David Bowie's first album was hot garbage. James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem said he was a failure for 32 years. I'm 28 - who's to say I can't make it???
I want to prove my worries and narratives wrong. I want to make myself proud. We're all just people at the end of the day, right? Don't we all have the capacity to be great?

3:29 First Day of My Life

I think I sense the shoreline
is that the crashing of waves
is the sky starting to lighten
i don't know if i'm suited for life there
but i know i need the change
And there's no one to guide you
It seems you've got to stumble your own way
And I know that you know
That I've been a fool before
But I ask that you give me grace
I'll be clear of the fog

"Ode to Viceroy" but Mac DeMarco loves rice cakes instead of cigarettes
Your 2025 challenge has really inspired me! I’ve always thought that writing a good song is the coolest thing that anyone could ever do, but I’ve never tried it myself because it feels like it’s reserved for the “geniuses” or the people who started super young or who are naturally good at it. I’m in my early 30s with some basic instrument skills, and now my goal for this year is to improve at music theory and instrument playing so that by the end of the year I can write at least one song that I actually like. Thanks for helping me break down that barrier of thinking that doing cool stuff is reserved for other people!
Dreamy vibes ❤️
Keep it up my friend! ⚡️
The song sounds great! I love the acoustic sound. It reminds me a bit of Yosemite by Lana Del Rey. You should definitely keep working on it
you just popped up in my feed and you are asking all the questions i am. never been a great writer but ive always loved music and admired how people can just seem to say what they feel in an artful and insightful way. you are inspiring me that its okay to be a beginner, you just have to keep going :) please keep writing and playing and singing
I loooved this one, I'd me delighted to hear an extended version of this You think you'll ever do that with any of your songs?
you're inspiring! it encourages me as a new songwriter. Thanks for being brave and putting your new songs and your process!
Hehe, thank you!! Honestly this feels like such a fucking treat because a) sharing my shitness can show other people that it's ok to be shit b) hopefully I'll get better and show that that's possible c) it's motivating as hell to have a daily deadline etc etc. Life hack dude!!
What a genuine youtuber, I love it, keep at it man!
Thank you!! 🥰
good luck! It's interesting!
Love the lyrics, some of them are wonderfully terrible and others are terribly wonderful
Yesss this is the perfect description lol
lol love this!
You're really talented! I liked the message of the song a lot! Looking forward to the next one
Ahh thank you so much!! (Sorry for replying immediately lol I've just been replying to all my comments at this exact moment lol) Always imagined that when someone called me talented I'd want to say this so here goes - I don't believe in talent!! I think?? Honestly I feel like the epitome of "if I can do it, anyone can" - I'm dumb as hell, lol But thank you for listening!! Day 4 is even better IMO
Best one yet!
I *just* came across your channel, day 1 got recommended by RUclips for me and I've loved what you're doing! I also read your channel's description and i thought it was a great philosophy. Do you have an Instagram where i can follow you?
Holy crap: that tune is amazing! Goosebumps!!
Something very poetic about the first time I ever evoked an emotional reaction in someone via music being on day 1 of this challenge, that's such an exciting first and it's day fuckin 1 lfg !!!
Let's Ffff gooooo! 🙌🔥💪
I feel like a balance is of both types of thinking is good, or even just knowing when to switch from one to another. I had someone explain to me like, go easy on yourself first just to get all those ideas out there. They may feel cringey or too straight forward but maybe thats what the song needs. After you've gotten everything out then its time to refine a bit, after each reassessment get a little more specific or critical. Writing is re-writing, and things might feel like they're never done. You can always be learning and growing but it starts with going easy on yourself! I'm definitely not perfect at this and its way easier said than done, but I think it's a good way to look at it! Also great stuff here today! To me it kinda sounds reminiscent of "Need 2" by Pinegrove or the intro to "Watch Your Mouth" by the Backseat Lovers. Similar kind of melodies with an acoustic guitar. Sounding good man!
Ayy hey Sky!! Yeah I really like this frame, it's like "write what is currently in front of you/on your mind, at your current level of understanding/complexity, and over time you'll have exhausted all the simple/shallower stuff and will be incentivised to dive deeper" Ed Sheeran (not exactly my artistic role model but still) had a good analogy for songwriting as like turning on a tap that runs with dirty water for a while and then it becomes clean - ruclips.net/video/EbU8MSpqTac/видео.html And thank you!! I'm legit really pleased to already be working on my "oh my writing is bad" thing that I think I commented on your vid. Gonna be a generative year lfg
i was thinking about what you said about worrying about the quality of your lyrics and i don't think you should constrain yourself (necessarily) to the every day rule if you find something that you think needs more time. So for example if you DO start creating a song and are writing something that you think needs time to flesh out the ideas and convey it in a way you truly like, i find myself (for someone who has yet to make a song only just ideas so cant really be giving advice lmao) that if i find something i truly like i think its better to put in on the back burner like i have some songs that i have been "writing" for months now that i vaguley passively thinking about it and theyre slowly forming idk if this makes any sense but i think if within say the first twenty minutes if you get an idea you really love make a note of it and move on because i think making a song a day is going to be brilliant for you genuinely and youll improve on all aspects really so then you can take what youve learned and apply it to these ideas youve pushed back if that makes sense but i have no idea. Some of the best songs ever written have been written in one sitting so each to their own!
I've had this on my mind a lot and I definitely agree, and this really helped shine a light on something I didn't even realising I was doing (that is, operating on the assumption that every song has to have been conceived & created in that one day) Really like the idea of having slow-burn songs that I gradually add to, chew on etc, whilst also pumping out the quick ones!! Thank you for commenting ❤️
Nice one. Really liked yesterday's song as well. I think you've got a lot of the right ideas about this sort of thing. The only way to really become more creative is to put in the work. Obviously much easier said than done though, so wishing the best on this journey and looking forward to future songs.
Thank you!! Really excited to look back on all this in a year 🤩
Happy new year, Alex! Love this idea, good luck
Happy new year Nyn!! <3
Sounds really really good! Very damian ricey loved it
Ahhh this made me shout “yayyyy” out loud lmao, thank you so much!! I love Damien, Cheers Darlin is absolutely transcendent
I'm excited to hear the stuff you're gonna make this year from this! Day 1 sounding great and really like the implementation of fx and the birdsongs. Also crazy that I just uploaded a video of me doing something similar for a month. I learned a heck of a lot about music, my writing style and flow, so I'm hoping you're able to learn a lot as well! Wishing you the best of luck, will be looking forward to the videos!
Ahhhh amazing that you did a challenge!! You're great in front of the camera, love the chill vibe & your musicianship, let's fuckin goooooo Excited to learn a whole bunch 🥰
good luck with this challenge! i've been wanting to get back into making music because i've never been able to get myself to commit to it outside of a school setting meaning i haven't touched anything in years.(i'm hoping that by watching others do what i want, it'll get me to get up and work on it... eventually lol. maybe i'll do a challenge myself to figure it out. i really did like the song you made! the softer sound is sometihing i've always been drawn to my entire life, and it was so relaxing to listen to! very atmospheric, but not in an overwhelming way. i'm excited to see your check-ins and hear all your songs!
eee thank you!! I honestly can't recommend an output-based challenge enough, www.youtube.com/@augystudio & www.youtube.com/@sundayskymusic are doing similar things, I think publicly publishing your stuff is really helpful and people are shockingly supportive lol 🥰
Just discovered your channel, really good stuff man! love the content, and your musical style!
Ahhh thank you so much!! This is the first time anyone (including me) has said that I have a style so that legit rules 🥰🤩
Great job keep up the good work!
I feel these vibes in the beginning so much haha. Great video, I'm def taking away some inspiration from it! My favourite is the end section about the strokes remake. And "I'm free!" haha I felt this after publishing my recent video that took me A LOT of time to sift through ;_;
Hehe thank you Augy!! Yeah it felt really good to throw the blanket on and complain lol. And yay in that case I'm glad I chucked in that Strokes bit even with the lack of footage lol, was a nice experiment :)
man this version is so fire, thanks for i can listened this, congratulatin man
Beautiful happy dog ❤ very well loved
is 17:10 elder scrolls soundtrack
Hell yeah, Harvest Dawn, the nostalgia!!!
great process video, i love your earnest demeanor and willingness to be vulnerable within your lyrics. fear of failure or sounding "mid" is honestly the biggest thing holding me back from creating so this was a needed message. subscribed and excited to see what comes next!
hehe thank you so much!!! Yeah embracing mid-ness is clearly just the #1 thing - I'm sure there's no artist in history who's first 5-40 attempts at their art form (like not first 5-40 published things but first 5-40 songs ever) weren't bad !!
aye shout out @ethan Davis
very wholesome nice guy!!
Harold Speed said: “Painting is 4 years of drawing, 4 years of painting, and then another 4 years of learning to draw again.” So as a painter(Oil Painter) you’d train as long as a surgeon.
Hell yeah, thank you Austin!! 🥰 I have a model that whenever I publish a video most people watching it will be seeing my channel for the first time, so it's actually wild to think of people like you who seem to have heard all of the songs so far, that's so fuckin cooolll
As someone who has studied visual arts, I was taught that it’s good to copy to learn because it was done in the Renaissance. I’m surprised that none of our history teachers have ever told us that in the Romantic era that was frowned upon. The more you know! But I see it as a way in which society changes and that one has always to do what they please (as long as they don’t hurt anybody, ofc!). Because some things will be frowned upon during an era but might not be on the next. Humanity is weird xD
Yeah 100%, the danger is in taking one frame as the absolute truth, which I was doing without realising with "artistic genius is a thing". Something something "challenge first principles" innit. Especially as a STEM guy, I've never studied any of this stuff, I'm learning so much atm it rulesss
Man, keep doing the good work! This video is so calming and inspiring, just feels really refreshing. I’ve been writing my own songs for 3-4 years at this point, and I always feel frustrated when it comes to recording and song production, but this approach of yours sounds really fun. Also I notice that in my song writing process I also sticked to that ‘steal like an artist’ approach, not even being aware of it, and it’s probably been the most inspiring way to write songs for me, as I could just play around with chords or similar melody taken from the song that I like, and it usually led to interesting results.
Hell yeah, thank you for watching and commenting!! I've been reading Roland Barthes essay "the death of the author" where he talks about how we're too obsessed with the idea of the author, how this is a Romantic view of "artistic genius" etc, and really we should see ourselves as "scriptors", just channeling whatever is currently around This might not make that much sense taken from the overall essay (highly recommend it!!) but here's a copy-paste: "Having buried the Author, the modem scriptor can thus no longer believe, as according to the pathetic view of his predecessors, that this hand is too slow for his thought or passion and that consequently, making a law of necessity, he must emphasize this delay and indefinitely 'polish' his form. For him, on the contrary, the hand, cut off from any voice, borne by a pure gesture of inscription (and not of expression), traces a field without origin - or which, at least, has no other origin than language itself, language which ceaselessly calls into question all origins. We know now that a text is not a line of words releasing a single 'theological' meaning (the 'message' of the Author- God) but a multi-dimensional space in which a variety of writings, none' of them original, blend and clash. The text is a tissue of quotations drawn from the innumerable centres of culture." I really like this reframe of just like, "yeah I don't have to be truly original, Everything is a Remix (Kirby Ferguson)" etc etc 😎
@ Wow, thanks for the recommendation! For some reason, the thing that you’re describing reminds me of David Lynch’s approach and his concept of Transcendental Meditation. I’m not a big expert in that, I have pretty superficial knowledge. But from my perspective, the best way to create something is to reach a sort of ‘flow state’, where I just let my mind take me where it wants to. I don’t try to push some narrative, I’m just going with the first thing that comes to mind. I’m not quite sure if that’s what you were referring to, but anyways, here is my 5 cents. And I feel like that’s where this idea of the big Author stems from, as there is some mystical, almost psychic, power in being able to reach the unconscious, take something valuable from it and channel it into the real world. I don’t know, maybe it sounds pretentious, in most cases, it’s not only about the creative power, but about your skills and years of experience.
this was such a nice video essay and with a little bit food for thought :) good one!
Hehe thank you!!
youtube recommended this to me
good 😎
Dat production quality 📈
Hell yeah, I intentionally went overboard with production quality after Kendrick Lamar's new album came out and he said on the first song "keep your head down and work like I do", lol, I've been getting up at 6am ever since 😅 😎 thanks for watching! <3
Great video!
Thank you Mr 420!
@ hahaha, my pleasure. Just speaking the truth
I always tell my students in my photography class a lyric from mewithoutYou. "To the perpetually plain and the incurable inane a glass can only spill what it contains." If you aren't filling yourself with history, philosophy, personal experience, and others art. You'll never have anything to say with your art.
When do we go get a beer?
Omg my hero!!!! I'll see you at the Spread Eagle in an hour? 🍻
Spend some time finding vocal chains you like!! Melda has from free pitch correction tools if you dont have any already!! Great vid keep up work!!
Hell yes, my melodyne trial expired, will definitely check that out!! I definitely think that having a few effects chains that I like would make a hugeeee difference. Thanks for watching!!
@alexiscreatingthings of course ! If you maybe wanna explore some dnb or heavy electronic stuff hmu!
I think art.... or at least good art, it draws on our experience of the world. Yes you need the technical skills, and the artistic spark and all that.... but you also need to have something to show or say. If fuel is your musical ability, you also need something to react it with. A spark without air, is as ineffective as art without your life experience. There's a reason why so many songs are love songs. Love is an easy way to communicate a lived experience. ^Did this sound deep?...... Plz say yes lol. I've always wanted to be profound Haha..... Anyway, I'm really liking these videos! Might just be the accent but you do give a bit of the hbomberguy/hank or John green video-essay vibes. Hope everything turns out alright!
Thank you very much! Love the Hbomberguy & vlogbrother comparisons, amazing 🤩 And yes that did sound profound, congrats 😎 I think this is a hidden benefit to starting on this path relatively late in life (I mean, 28 is obviously young as hell, but compared to my heroes who would have started in their teens) - a tonne has happened, I've made mistakes and therefore have "wisdom" and things to talk about, etc etc. Thank you for watching!
13:15 - This reminds me a of a song haha. Have you heard 'Didn't Fix Me' by the band Dawes?
Just listened to it, damn, super relevant!!
One thing to keep in mind...... it seems most successful artists didn't know what they were going to become. Their 'artistic vision' from when they were starting out is vastly different from who they are now. I think too often we set expectations for ourselves. Life is not a movie or book. There is no overarching narrative arc. Rather, the next page is simply built on the previous. The skills we learn, people we meet, and decisions we make today, accumulate and impact the choices presented to us tomorrow. Rarely do people get a glimpse of where they will end up. Don't beat yourself up for not knowing where you want to go. Just pick a direction, and start walking :)
Hey! This randomly came up in my suggested videos, i'm literally on the same path, took 6months leave of absence in september, out here at home creating every day. Would love to connect and maybe hold eachother accountable if you need anything to that effect. inspiring stuff man
Hell yeah, awesome, I'll email you!!
I feel artistic vision and style are fairly similar, as some people may not like your vision, and how style develops throughout your journey
Enjoying following your journey here. Viewing artistic vision as a skillset to develop feels spot on. I was actually about to comment about WeeklyBeats as it seems like it'd be right up your alley. This has been my first year doing it and the community has been great + the learning that comes from forced consistent output. Only 3 weeks left though (runs every other year).
OH SHIT IT’S EVERY _OTHER_ YEAR??? Damn that’s a huge bummer, I was 100% planning on doing it. Shit, maybe I’ll have to organise my own… thank you for commenting ❤️
@@alexiscreatingthings Haha yeah, unfortunate timing. There might be a smaller cohort from the site that keeps doing weekly shares in the off-year, not sure where that happens but there's a WB discord.
Amazing video. I think I have the same fear that you had, where I think that I don't have the potential to creatively express myself (that creative vision), and at the same time be satisfied by what I create, I just haven't been able to do that yet. And my "idols" are also unbelievably creative people. Thank you for making this video, you're sincere and honest and I think I'll look at my own problem a little differently now. Crazy that your video was only seen by 45 people, I'm glad I don't it recommended.
Ahhh thank you so much!! 🥰 honestly making these videos is so good for helping me reframe unhelpful narratives like this, I'm so excited to keep doing it 😎 And yeah the algorithm is fickle lol, I've been really struggling to pick a good title for this one 😅
Great to see the journey you're on ... And so awesome that you made all your own backing music! Fusing modalities like a true artist🔥
This is actually very inspiring for me, thank you for making content like this! (also your speaking voice is very calming)
Hehe thank you!! <3
