Welcome to Northeast Ohio Container Garden, we are a small family garden that plants in reusable food safe containers that are acquired from local businesses, we focus on growing food for our family while reducing our costs and trying new vegetables. We will show how you can grow food for your family on a budget and in small spaces.
How your veggies can be 'free' - a response to Migardener Facebook Post today #containergardening
Today we are going to detail our costs for our container garden. While you can argue that nothing is never 'free'. The costs are reduced year over year to where your veggies are practically 'free'. Each method of gardening has costs involved as well as going to the store and spending time, gas, wear and tear on your car and the environmental impacts of driving. yes, if you get a metal raised bed your ROI is not going to be quick. #containergardening #garden #gardening #homegrown #growyourownfood #homegrowngardens

Greenhouse Catastrophe!!! - Storm damaged plants.
How many days took small to bigger
It took about 110 days. It was slower then the seed package said.
I’m also in NEO, and planted my first ever garden this year and also started a compost bin. It’s been so exciting!
That is great. Hope our channel can help you out and inspire you to grow more food for your family.
@@NortheastOhioContainerGarden Thanks, me too!
Nice. That vine was productive
We got a few so not bad for first time.
What temp ?
There is no temp setting on my machine. Will take a temp with my BBQ probe next time I run it and let you know.
I've never actually thought of paprika as something you can make. Can't wait for the next update!
You can make almost all spices you find in the store. Just grow the vegetables or herbs and get a dehydrator. Ours on Amazon is $50 right now. Just keep an eye out for sales.
My mom would buy the big glass jar of deviled eggs and once they were gone she would slice up cucumbers and onion’s into rings and put vinegar and idk what else in it, put it in the fridge and it was awesome! I may try canning some this weekend
Start small and see what you can make. With prices going through the roof, this is the best time to try canning food to save money. Our whole channel is centered around growing food and saving money while doing it.
How many plants per container?
We have been successful with 4 per container.
@@NortheastOhioContainerGarden thank you!
I think you should had pollinated the females flowers
We did by hand. Was growing in hard clay so we were not surprised by the results. Will try again next year once we prep a new area.
Black? Any other color....
Nope. They took forever to turn orange and lost that footage last year.
Had a few last season here in 6s Mid Ohio and also had good luck.
They grow better then other varieties of peppers. We are trying Marconis this year and not a lot of fruit.
Beautiful
Thanks
Add in that you can learn how to save seeds, which will produce hardier plants in the long run and make your own compost tea from yard clippings for fertilizer. Composting in general saves money, and you can use leaves, grass clippings, and pine needles as mulch. As others have mentioned, planting directly into the ground is even cheaper. The only big expense is fencing or caging the plants to keep critters out, but those last for years, if not decades.
Spot on.
Beautiful gardens. Did you hear the original owner also grew bananas in the greenhouse along with other fruits? Beautiful place.
No we missed that one. That is impressive to grow bananas in greenhouse.
I get progressively more compost every year, I throw in cardboard etc, that helps me get more free growing medium every year
I wish we had a good source of compost here in NEO. Either bagged from big box or you have to drive forever down to Amish. Starting to make our own.
@@NortheastOhioContainerGarden I just collect yard debris scraps paper in those big plastic totes, cut drainage holes on the bottom. They last through the winter with the top off (Pennsylvania) I’m sure they will eventually degrade but they are only like six bucks
@@damnyankeesdaughter5427 will give that a shot.
Thanks for the reminder about composting cardboard! :) Ideally compost is supposed to be an equal mix of green (recently alive) plant matter and brown (fully dead plant matter). We've reached the point of the year where everything readily available aside from cardboard and coffee grounds is green.
@@NortheastOhioContainerGarden If you live in an area where people bag up yard waste for garbage pickup, take advantage of all the bagged fall leaves. Those break down to leaf mould, the richest compost you can get. I also live in an area where people don't usually salt their sidewalks in the winter. Once or twice a year, I scoop up the plant matter that has crept onto the concrete. Usually by the time I get to it, it has already broken down to rich humus - great for the garden!
Nothing free. Maybe my cousins do get free veggies as I've gifted extra and in order for me to have enough I planted extra Anyone who doesn't do math will take a beating Great topic
Certainly this topic can go many ways. We all need to remember that growing our own food has more benefits the just something to eat.
I'm convinced my in ground beds are the cheapest method of gardening. Before I buy wood or steel for beds I'd build concrete sections and cement stakes and they would be cheaper in a 20 year investment.. M.I.Gardener does have a good price for seeds but is limited and ordered quickly because many people know about him as reasonably priced and good.Sadly he hasn't ever variety I'm repeating as I've several favorites. Honestly I feel some people invested more in raising vegetables than they can buy them at the farmers market. Thanks
You are 100% correct, in ground will always be the most economical option. So many ways to boarder the bed that can be very cheap if not free.
Great job!
Thanks!
Just woooow ❤
Thanks, this year should be even better.
I just transplanted my basil, lemon balm and oregano
Nice, keep us updated on how those grow for you.
I have my onions curing inside right now with a fan, should that be sufficient enough? I’ve heard mixed opinions on them being outside vs inside.
Heard the same here. I think as long as you have good airflow it just might take a little longer to cure indoors. Keep it up and try new things. Next year leave a few outside and see how that goes.
i always thought being in an appartment that i couldnt do much, but its surprising how much you can do when you try! =P
The possibilities are endless. Keep pushing and try new things. Talk to your apartment manager about a community garden if you have green space to use.
Looking good!!!
Thanks. This spring was colder then normal so was not sure they would make it.
Did you blanch them
Yes we did, the mistake we made was not thawing them prior to heating them up. Some batches were soggy.. we are going to freeze again this year but will thaw/drain before using.
Their in ground beds are also my method also..I add leaves and grass clippings and garden waste after I run it thru my mulcher / sheader I believe that blended together helps bonds it for blowing away and helping break it down into compost by middle of growing season.I believe pepper love my mulching this way.I mulch early fall and spring as leaves and clippings become available in seasons. Thanks and yeah we feed soil
Thanks for sharing
Any temperature below 60 does damage peppers. I put my out just a few days before our freeze warning here in 6s Columbus OH then about 10 days later we've been getting some 50 s temperature as you agreed pepper don't take the chills in the 50s . Question I'm having something eating my pepper leaves like never before.it's.proably a camouflage caterpillar I'm not seeing it yet.
Yup, the temps here in Ohio are crazy. Low of 48 last night here in CLE. I have not had pest pressure yet so not sure what your next steps are. I would look at getting some Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) and see if that would help.
Beautiful
Thanks, hope this years tomatoes look even better. Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks.
Do bush beans have tendrils? My packet said bush beans but they are getting entangled within eachother in the buckets.
Not that I am aware of, I know peas have them but I have not seen them on bush beans. Pole beans possibly.
It would be backbreaking work to bring all those pots in when you get a frost warning.
We have several row covers and frost blankets we can drop over them. Have not had an issue using them the past few years. Lowes sells some nice ones for decent money.
If you live in a very hot area, doesn't planting in containers make the soil very hot and can damage the plant?
If you get light colored containers it will reflect some of the light/heat. Containers will require more water at times. You can always cover your veggies with shade cloth during the really hot times.
See our instructions for making water-conservative self-watering containers, provided free to the public as part of our nonprofit program of food security and sustainability education, The Learn & Grow Educational Series: ruclips.net/video/iN_AFxPzSA0/видео.html
What size grow bags did you use for the tomato plants?
for our San Marzano tomatoes or indeterminate ones we use 20 gallon (75 liter) bags (the large green ones) and for the bush style we use 5-7 gallon (18-26 liter) food grade plastic buckets. Hope this helps you.

@@NortheastOhioContainerGarden actually I have one my yard is all rocky clay but I really want to garden I’m in geauga county
@@NortheastOhioContainerGarden I subbed
@@jasonnester9514 the best thing is to go full container gardening. You can get food grade buckets cheap from donut/ bakery shops and you can grow almost everything. Look for soil from your local landscape supply stores, that would be the most economical source.
@@NortheastOhioContainerGarden right on thank you
Great video. Very nice.
Thank you so much!!!
Greetings from Tampa FL. Good looking garden, very inspirational to get me there. I'm new to the channel. I'd like to see how one would start with the buckets.
Greetings and thanks for subscribing. The easiest way to start in buckets is to visit a local bakery or donut shop and see if they will give you for free or for a small cost their food safe buckets. You either want to use food safe buckets or the cloth grow bags. I will make a video here soon on all the details for you and others that want to container garden. Thanks again and enjoy our channel.
I did not know that about onion plants thank you
Glad to provide useful information, hope it helps you grow great onions. Stay tuned for the rest of the harvest and curing methods we use.
Nice peppers thank you for sharing😁
Just ordered my dehydrator so stay tuned for paprika making. 😁
WOW nice
i like beans
Wow! You are way ahead of me here in the Dayton area!
When did you start your beans? I like keeping a simple journal so I know how things are going.
@@NortheastOhioContainerGarden I don't remember but it was later than usual-some time in June, I trhink.
You should be ok. I have planted more and picked about 4 lbs of beans out of 4 buckets with 3 plants each. You can plant them dense and they will do fine. Good luck and share your harvest.
HOW MANY SLIPS DID YOU PLANT IN THAT SINGLE GROW BAG???... NICE HARVEST!!! HOW WILL YOU CURE THEM NEXT??? ARE WHITE POTATOES 🍠 TO WASHED DIRECTLY AFTER HARVESTING???... THANKS FOR SHARING!!!🌿🥔🍅😃👍🏽🙋🏾🔥🙏🏾👑➕📖🔥
We planted 2 seed potatoes per bag and harvested about 2-3 pounds/ 1-1.5 kg per bag. We are curing them in our basement, do not wash them until you use them, that will help keep the skins intact for longer storage. Expect 3-4 months of storage. Hope this helps.
Good idea
Great job👋🏾
Thanks 💯
WOOW 😱
Nice healthy tomato plants🍅👍🏾👍🏾
They are looking good. Now to see how it goes with this dry weather. Next week or so it's cooling off a bit.
