Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number - Finale: Bad Trip
Well, that was certainly an ending... I actually quite like it though. Escapism can lead to dire consequences when you engage in it too much. Surprisingly easy last level after how hard the game had been. While I don't think the sequel is as good as the original Hotline Miami, I do still think it's a good game. Certainly quite different if nothing else.

    Oh man, I could feel the pain that had to be felt 33 minutes into Episode 25. Haha. Good job finally conquering it though. I know that'd been giving you trouble for a while. God, the scenery in the last two chapters is remarkable. Also, we finally get to see some of Theodore's manipulation. It isn't much, but it's there. Honestly, Chapters 16 & 17 feel like an entirely separate game from the rest of what led up to it, and I'd say it's in those chapters where the game's trailer was finally earned. Chapters 16 and 17 are phenomenal from front to back, and while I do have a few grievances, they're so small that they aren't worth bringing up right now. It's a shame more of the game couldn't be like this, but that doesn't detract from the fact that part of it is, and that's already far more than many other games could say. I love so much about this final stretch that listing the parts I enjoyed would just end up being a list of nearly everything in it. This is precisely how you conclude a story. I will say, I still think it's dumb Mobius was that easy to topple, but I suppose technically it isn't completely toppled, so I'll give it a begrudging pass this time. Overall, I think I'd give this game either an 8.625 or 8.75. I have yet to decide between the two, but this was really solid either way. Not a 10/10, but very much worthy of praise.

      Yeah, the shooting range was tough, but it was worth it to get that "Guess I should get back to that 'looking for my daughter' thing" line. Finally getting to hear "Making Your Way Home", after all of the small teasers in other parts of the game, was great. Chapter 16 in of itself was a great surprise. It's definitely a moment that says, "Hey, this game is special." I'm glad you really enjoyed the finale, and I wouldn't mind hearing you go into more details of why you enjoyed it so much. To be honest, I think they knew making a third game would be unlikely for a while, so they wanted to end the sequel on a very satisfying note, even with a few sequel bait teasers. I'm not sure when I'll post the bonus videos, and they'll probably nudge your score a bit higher, but I'm glad you enjoyed the game so much. Your final score is honestly higher than I was expecting. I'm glad that my summer long plan to get you to give TEW2 a higher score finally paid off haha. Personally, I'd probably still give it at least a 9.5/10. It was definitely the biggest surprise of 2017 for me, and easily my favorite horror game of that year. There was some good competition too. I never expected you to give it as high of a score as I did, but I'm still glad you enjoyed it.

      @@thebluelink3extra117 I don't have too much to add to your reply on Episode 34, so I figured I'd just tell you I agree with it here. For the most part, my reaction to this comment is largely the same. This ending sequence really was something special. As awkward as it was to adjust to, I also think bringing Myra back into the mix was a good way to allow Seb to leave STEM with his daughter without making it into some perfect, sunshine and rainbows ending. It allows for there to be loss, but it also means Seb gets to be with his daughter again, which the poor guy really deserves. All in all, it wrapped up very nicely, and I look forward to the bonus videos! I figured I'd end up seeing the game as being somewhere between an 8 and an 8.5, so I'm a bit surprised that I settled on an 8.675 too. I've been struggling with figuring out whether I'd rank this above or below KH BBS. These two games are about on the same level for me. Anyway, I'm glad you got me to stick with it. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • @tropichawk850

    This Episode was amazing. THIS is the sort of stuff I was looking forward to from this game. It's unfortunate it took so long to get to it, but that doesn't detract from how well done this was. Seb confronting his demons was great, Myra usurping Theodore was fantastic, and the way these events subsequently morph STEM into this monotone hellscape is worth all the chef kisses I have to offer. The setup and opening of this game fumbled a bit, but it found its footing quickly. Only to then take only the most minimal steps forward for the longest time. Stefano's sendoff was great, but it certainly wasn't spectacular, and everything that followed it kind of dropped the ball. Then the last "big" event with Seb encountering Theodore and 'Lily', shooting Esmerelda, and talking to Myra within his head, all left me unsatisfied due to some rocky execution. However, this bit did not falter in the slightest. This was gold. I really hope there's more than just a couple Episodes left to this game, because this is the exact sort of content I was hoping to see, and if it continues to knock it out of the park as well as it did in this Episode, my score for TEW2 is only going to continue climbing. As of now, I'd say I'm most comfortable placing this game at either an 8.25 or 8.375. (Oh, also, clever title for Episode 33.)

      @thebluelink3extra117 4 года назад

      I'm really glad you enjoyed this episode. Confronting the enemies from the first game was definitely a welcome surprise when I first played it, especially when Seb got to use the chainsaw on the Sadist from way back in the beginning of the first game. It was also satisfying to injure Theodore with fire, seeing how usually he uses fire to his advantage. I went with Long Way Up for the title of episode 33 not just to reference the song from the first game, but also to show how Seb is ascending after his big descent in chapter 12. In a way, you could view Seb's assault on Theodore's stronghold as metaphorical for him braving the fires of his house to get to Lily's room. All of the fire on the outside is him trying to get into his house even though it's on fire, and him climbing the tower is like him trying to get to Lily's room on the second floor. Him making peace with Lily is him finally saving her from the fire, metaphorically that is. Unfortunately, the game really is almost over. Hopefully these last few episodes will be good for you though.

    I suppose I’ll start out with a bit of a side note: Tatiana's comment about self-discovery being what makes STEM so intriguing sounds as though it's the writers speaking directly to the player. Anywho, I had a feeling those Mu Centers were going to come into play at some point. I also get the feeling that the lady who's hunting Seb down is a precursor for The Phenomenon. I am noticing some of that overacting acting from the start of the game coming back just a bit. Hopefully, it’s temporary. Either way, I can't really say what happened with Liam got to me all that much, but hey, it was there. XD That aside, I have to ask... how did anyone ever listen to anything Thomas had to say? And how the hell did he fool Mobius, again? What we're told about his speaking skills and what we see of them are two polar opposite things. He is horrible at persuasion. I mean, I get that Hoffman explains this away by saying he doesn’t need to be great at how he speaks with others anymore, but it feels less like a clever direction for his character, and more like the writer had no clue how to write effective dialogue for him and used this as an excuse for it. It’s not that it doesn’t work. It’s fine, I suppose. I just wish we could’ve seen the persuasive linguistic side of him that he’s so known for. Nonetheless, the latter half of Episode 29 was… odd. It's probably the highlight of the game so far. Still, I can’t help but feel like what Myra had to say to Sebastion was way too on the nose, and for it to click with him right away, only for him to forget it mere seconds later, and then have it immediately click with him again was very odd. I also can’t shake the feeling that something’s off about it, and I don’t quite know what. Maybe something isn’t gelling with me, or there’s something I missed. I don’t know. It’s playing havoc on my ability to pinpoint my current rating of this game though. All I can say at this point is it’s somewhere between an 8 and an 8.5. Moving on, though, I have similar feelings towards Esmerelda’s fate as Liam’s, but hey, at least I felt a little bummed by it. I will say Seb is very forgiving towards her though, which is rather sweet, as well as a great way to reflect his new mindset. I think that’s about all I have to say on this batch of Episodes though, but it was pretty good, and I look forward to more!

    • @thebluelink3extra117
      @thebluelink3extra117 4 года назад

      Fair enough. The conclusion with Anima was pretty good, especially when he gets his revolver from the first game. Theodore seems to like just dominating others' wills in STEM. He uses their fears and guilt against them. That's basically how he controlled O'neal. He was such a scaredy-cat that Theodore was able to control him by making his fear go away, along with his free-will. Similar to how he's trying to control Seb, though with guilt instead of fear. He promises to make their problems go away, and will give them freedom through submission. I guess it's less about persuasion now, and more about dominating them. This is very evident in most of chapter 12, when he's trying very hard to break Seb. I like the talk Seb has with Myra, though I'll admit it is kinda strange. I do think it's kinda done that way on purpose, as this seems to be a more "angelic" version of Myra. Perhaps she's Myra's better qualities there to help Seb, or maybe it's just a projection of Seb's own mind giving him what he needs to hear. It's hard to tell. The talk was good for Seb, but I think it's realistic that it would take a while for it all to sink in. He spent years thinking Lily died in a fire, and that still haunted him even after learning the truth. Sometimes it takes time for things to truly sink in. It's not super sad that they died, but it still sucks.

    • @tropichawk850

      @@thebluelink3extra117 I thought the Anima conclusion was decent. Nothing worth writing home about though. That revolver bit was my favorite part from it though. Regardless, I completely understand regarding Theodore. I just wish the side of him everyone builds up to be his most menacing and powerful trait were actually shown. Myra and Seb's talk was nice both thematically and in a broad sense though. I only wish it had a bit more grace in how the dialogue was written. Also, I might not have phrased myself very well, but I agree with you about Seb's change. I think things like that should take time to sink in. It's very unrealistic to expect it to just click right away. 9 times out of 10, if you're writing character growth that way, you're doing it wrong. The problem is that: "I understand. I'm not to blame." "I'm to blame!!" "I understand. I'm not to blame." all within the span of a minute or two isn't something taking time to sink in. It's just redundant. I don't want to sound like this was all bad though. I do like the direction the story took, I'm just not sure if the execution was all there for me. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. The environment is just so different from how it was when Stefano was in control, and getting thrown into it so suddenly is pretty terrifying. The first game constantly threw you around into different environments, and while that does make it hard to ever get comfortable, you do get used to it. I think by letting you get comfortable with a certain type of atmosphere for so long, suddenly throwing you into a new type of atmosphere really throws you for a loop. I hope events like this are at least somewhat more plentiful moving forward. Also, what with the line "everyone gets lucky... once", all his knife throwing, and the blinding lights that appear in the second phase, I can't help but draw parallels between the boss battle with Stefano and MGS2's battle with Olga. So that's yet another thing in this game that reminds me of Metal Gear. Anywho, I don't think I've ever been as fixated on either this game or the one before it as I was when Myra showed up. That entire art burning situation is very weird to me. Like, what was Stefano trying to get Seb to do by telling him to appreciate his art before he could come in, if burning said art was the only way to actually enter? There's a pretty heavily implication there, so if Stefano actually ends up being upset by Seb burning his art I'm going to be very confused considering that's essentially exactly what he told Seb to do. What's more, not only did we finally meet up with Stefano, (Which just makes me think of Pewdiepie, so that's going to be hard to get out of my head,) but we also had it verified for certain that Stefano isn't pulling any major strings here. He's just an artist, and he was merely handing "the girl" off to someone else. I take it you're enjoying the sequel more than the first so far? I didn't realize it at first, but that main art piece and all of the mannequins are related to that story in the newspaper about the woman who's head was chopped off, which is most likely Stefano's first murder. Obscura is made up entirely of female parts, and is apparently in a constant state of pleasure, most likely sexual in nature. The game makes good use of the controller's rumble feature. When Stefano puts that cut on Seb's head, the controller slightly vibrates during it. It vibrates for other small moments like that too, usually whenever something is touching or interacting with Seb. There have been some hints so far of this other antagonist and their means of operation. Stefano is still a threat that needs to be stopped though. I doubt you'll be able to predict how the game ends.
