A lightweight story (well it’s opera so no surprise there) with some of Puccini’s finest writing. Those who unfavourably compare him with Verdi neglect that in his maturity Puccini was one of opera’s finest orchestrators.

Our girl was in top form here...perfect shading of each phrase, total command of her instrument in every register. I remember listening to this recording as a teen and being mesmerized by it. Forced me to realize that opera from the verismo period was just as heartfelt as anything in the popular genres of the 20th century. Thanks for posting this treasure. It brings back wonderful memories.

It was the movie Moonstruck (1987) that led me to find this recording years later in the classical music store where I worked and still have it in my mini-collection of opera recordings! I'm not sure who chose this recording for the Moonstruck movie but hearing it in the background and then once it hits its fortissimo crescendo when Cher walks down the block toward her house gave me chill bumps for weeks as I replayed it in my head years before I could buy this magnificent version of La Boheme! I think it was probably Nicholas Cage who probably suggested this recording to the producers and director as he has played opera recordings in some of his other movies, if so then KUDOS to Mr. Cage for his exquisite taste!

Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez' and Callas' interpretations are my favourites. Callas' is the saddest I can imagine, while Fernandez' one is sung with wholehearted pride in the face of deep loss and defeat. You can identify these emotions very clearly in both singers renditions. Amazing!
