1960 MFG Edinboro - 2 Year Transom Update
I was asked in a comment on another video how the transom had held up. Here's a look, along with some things I learned after the fact.

1960 MFG Edinboro Transom Repair - Finished and Ready for Paint
Просмотров 9358 лет назад
Recording my experience repairing the transom on my Grandfather's boat. I'm not an expert, only a novice. This was my first foray into transom and fiberglass repair. I'm sure there's a bunch that I did "wrong," won't be the last time. Hopefully my missteps will help others! Polyester and Epoxy lessons, getting better with fairing compound, ready to start slapping on paint!

I have a 1965 MFG Westfield, looking to do the transom pour Does the transom go all the way down on the Westfield?
not sure, but transoms on most boats are the full width and height of the stern. the hull styles changed a lot in those 5 years. your best bet is to hit the classic boat forums to ask around.
Whish we could see what you did with the floor
it's just marine plywood coated in a few layers of epoxy and white poly paint (same kind they use in shipyards). there are some supports for the middle that are cut from cedar 2x4s that match the rise of the center aluminum support.
How’s the new transom holding up??
Is not the same if you use fiberglass BONDO ???
uh uh
Hi there. Saw your video. I saw you put all bolts, dain tube, etc before you pour it. Will it easy to take the bolts and tubes off, after it got dried? Thanks
you need to coat anything you want to remove in a high temp paste wax. wherever you buy the arjay should be able to recommend a good wax
@@powel1aa awesome. Thank you
How many gals you use
don't recall. talk to your supplier and take a measurement of the transom you're pouring
What did you use for the drain tubes, and how did you seal around them?
5200 for the seal. The drain tubes are brass and can be purchased at West Marine or most online boat supply sites. I bought a special tool to flair the sides of the tub to match the original. I had them in the transom while doing the pour, and had them coated with mould release wax so I could remove them and replace them if needed down the road.
I've had a hard time finding any updates on these pourable transoms. Really appreciate you taking the time
did you ever fix those cracks? was the arjay separated from the glass?
It doesn't look like the arjay has separated. But it's a small transom and there are several bolts through, including the engine mounts, that are holding the skins tight to the core. I used some flexible, self-leveling caulk as a quick fix for the cracks. I've got two kids now since the original video was made and lack the time to get after it with more fiberglass. Seems to have worked well. If you do this, just get some polyester epoxy for coating the skins and you shouldn't run into any problems. The industry is trending towards more use of polyester anyhow.
Three years later, how has the bond been with the Arjay and the transom skin?
So far so good. I posted a follow-up video. Check my account.
Have no clue what your talking about but This has to be done to me mfg that has been sitting since the 70’s.
Great stuff bud! I was not expecting a personalized video shot only a few hours hours after commenting on a 2yr old video! Crazy awesome. Glad to hear it worked out well, and I really appreciate the advice on using polyester materials with the Arjay.. My Edinboro is believed to be a '61 as well.
I've watched all of your videos, and I know it's been several years, but I'm starting the same process on an identical model and year boat. I was hoping to know how the project stood up over time!
It's still solid as a rock. I'll post a follow-up video in a bit with some tips that I learned from mine.
Here you go. Best of luck on your project.
What was the product that you used.
Arjay. Mentioned it 4 times and also where I bought it, in the vid.
Instead of the mold release, can you just drill through this stuff?
Yes
which product is this?
Arjay. Purchased at local fiberglass supplier.
Did my transom in polyester
I used 15 gallons of this stuff in my transom unbelievable I have a 175 Mercury on the back Rock Solid I cut the whole back plate of the transom out. Then I cleaned up sanded the whole both sides glass the piece back in and poured it right in solid solid solid
Yeah mine is still crazy solid. The only thing I didn't know at the time (which I covered in another vid) was that I should have used a polyester based epoxy rather than west systems when coating the inside of the transom before the pour. Only time will tell if that was a crucial mistake. No delamination or issues yet though.
Yeah I just use resin from Walmart seems to work fine.
@@MrSprintcat really
10 4 that's what the rep said.
Looks good mine isn't real bad some one fixed it but not right it will be right I'm geting the same stuff arjay I'm geting 5 gallon kit takes 4.56 of it I'm thinking after I pour it it will be rock solid stringers are good shape boats been garage kept
Think you done the right thing it's 100℅ better than wood motors are always flexing wood and motor bolts loosen then water soaks the wood and it stays there cut the transom out of a boat I use to own it actuly had water in it at least a gallon or 2 and stink it been in there for years I still got the old boat it's out back of my garage in the woods I junked it after years of use I fixed it with wood and resin and cloth
Thinking about pouring that arjay in my Hydra sport bass boat it's got a little flex purdy strong but I think it be better I pour it some one fixed it in the past did a decent job but wood is wood it will rot no matter who dose the job
Dennis Harrison it worked well for me. Transom is Rock solid.
I'm a professional wooden and fiberglass boat builder from Maine, I will be doing this to my Edinboro as well, as far as I'm concerned you used the right stuff as long as it had a chopped strands in the polyester filler and the interior of the transom was reasonably clean and absolutely dry. Epoxy is great but I feel you would have been wasting your money, epoxy is mostly used for wooden boat building. I will be mixing my own filler using either silica or wood flour to thicken it and chopped strands to strengthen it along with polyester resin.
dale3858 I also am a boat builder. Worked at Irwin Yacht in Clearwater, Florida in the 70 and 80s. Sailboats 35 to 65 ft. I built the interior teak cabinetry. Working now on a MFG 1972. Rebuilding transom. Was rotten. Have video on RUclips titled....MFG transom rebuild. I'm experimenting with composite poly deck boards using PL Premium adhesive.
How did you determine how much arjay to buy
I knew what the depth (between the skins) and the max height at the keel was, and imagined a rectangle to the widest parts across the beam (width) and used that, figuring I'd have some left over. It comes in 5 gallon buckets, so you're pretty likely to end up with extra, and a rough estimate is usually pretty good. The shop I worked with was great in guiding the measurement as well - Fiberglass Coatings in St. Pete, FL.
I wanna be on your boat.
