Remembering Tim Samaras. It is hard to believe, but it is already 5 years since the tragic loss of researcher Tim Samaras, his son, Paul, and colleague Carl Young in the El Reno tornado. While best known for his contributions to tornado research (and making the almost impossible measurement of the pressure drop inside a major tornado - about 100 mb!), Tim also had a passion for lightning. In fact, at the time of the accident, his Lightning Investigation Vehicle (LIV), a key part of our DARPA sprite research program, had only been in service for one week.
