This comparison shows the shortcomings of the QODOSEN SR-286 when it comes to selectivity on AM vs. the vintage Sony ICF-2001 D with its unsurpassed Synchronous Detection function. After I replaced transistor Q303 and lifted the leg up on L302 resistor my 2001D was so much more sensitive than the Qodosen.
Isn't L302 an RF choke (part of a hi-pass filter) and not a resistor? From what I have read the main impact of lifting this choke is on the upper part of the AM broadcast (Medium Wave) band and not the shortwave bands.
Stephan -- not sure what the point of this is. The 2001D is a fundamentally different radio. Only NAR/WIDE selectivity. You're showing the SONY using SYNC whereas the Q does not have SYNC. And you only show the Q using one bandwidth (3 khz).
Sure , I know, in some way it's an "apples with oranges" comparison. However, to my understanding it's not forbidden, to compare oranges with apples. Sometimes, there even is a point....here, I wanted to demonstrate the power of an excellent SYNC function. I chose the smallest bandwith only with the Q (3khz), because the result with the wider bandwiths was even worse. I would not consider the Q's filter as excellent, the cheaper XHDATA D-808 (also w/o SYNC) is much better here imo.
D-808 has more pleasant sound than SR-286, wider, more treble probably. Same sensitivity on SW.👍🏻

I own 5 cheap DSP receivers and I have the same issue; I thought it wouldn't be possible to receive RNZ on this frequency. It turns out the Synchronous Detection function may help (if available). Thanks for comparison. 👍🏻
Of course, an owner of Malahit SDR V3 would not need anything else for AM. TEF6686-based receivers are very good for FMDX'ing, rest - SDR & NR=ON. 👍🏻
The Sony 2001D out performs the Q after it is modified. A few simple changes and it becomes much more sensitive.

@@HardcoreDXLithuania Anything can be compared to prove a hypothesis. For example, "Synchronous Detection provides better selectivity on weak signals" here. The SR-286 is currently getting a lot of attention, and I wanted to see how it compares to other radios, regardless of their level, class, price, or size.

And of cause remembering the radio of 70-s, tubes based, it's not copmarable to any modern . And SDR is even worse for long distance reception. I own around 10 different SDR in price range 50 - 300 Euro. It's just huge dissapoitment comparing to what I remeber was receiving with old tube based one.

Ich habe ihn bei AliExpress gekauft, direkt aus China. Das Gerät macht Spaß, aber entscheidend für das gute Signal ist die Antenne.

It depends what you want, both have their pros and cons. Qdosen is better on MW/LW and FM, has RDS but no SSB ability and no Airband.

Ja, der NRD-525 empfängt auf den höheren Bändern mit dem einfachen Draht erstaunlich gut. Ich hatte einen Empfangsbericht per Mail geschickt, aber leider keine Antwort bekommen, vielleicht probiere ich es auch nochmal per WhatsApp Beste 73 in den Norden

Impressing. What type/dimension of auxiliary antenna do you use and where is it located? Interestingly, the ANC-4 also improves the SNR by about 5 dB if I saw it well.
I am using a simple wire (2 m) located in the same room as the Wellbrook. You need to experiment a bit with the aux Antenna, for medium wave I found this setup quite useful. Yes, the SNR is significantly improved. N.B., the ANC-4 works best, if you have only 1 source of QRM.
