Scrapping history: The loss of the World War II workhorse hero M/S Vita

The Shetland bus M/S Vita 1 has arrived at the breakers yard and by all acounts is going to be scrapped within few weeks. This boat served on both sides during WW2 and is soon going to be lost to history. Yikes. I thought my Vallejo gloss varnish was difficult, yet it had never shredded the paint. Having said that, I wouldn't touch Humbrol with it barge pole. I don't miss enamel paint at all. Once I get started on the Yamato (yes, I followed the link you left me on Reddit), I'm probably going to use Tamiya lacquer for the first time instead of acrylics. Fingers crossed it is straightforward. 😊❤😊

  • @mariusrnning850
    @mariusrnning850 12 дней назад

    Cool build. I got both the Tamiya Tirpitz and Bismarck myself, which I completed a few years back. Too bad with the Humbrol paint. Did you use any base coat or primer that the enamel paint reacted with?

    • @andysmodelandstuff4306
      @andysmodelandstuff4306 12 дней назад

      I used Tamiya primer beforeI painted it, but that did not seem to effect the paint. It seems to me that the reaction was between the paint and clear coat, which is super strange to me bacause Humbrol made both. The Tamiya clear coat (I put three layers on in the end) caused no reaction at all and helped hide the Humbrol dissaster

    • @mariusrnning850
      @mariusrnning850 11 дней назад

      @@andysmodelandstuff4306 I agree, that is strange. I'd understand if you combined acrylics with enamel, but that was not the case here.

    • @WgCdrLuddite
      @WgCdrLuddite 10 дней назад

      I use oil washes that I make with oil paint and distilled turpentine. Works over all paint types and you don't need a gloss coat underneath. I used Humbrol for half a century but the quality lately is piss-poor so now I am learning to use acrylics.

    I'll assume that what we have here is a WWII US jeep that has been modified for UK postwar service by adding additional marker lights and has had a newer M38 recoilless rifle windscreen added. Being a WWII enthusiast, I recommend ditching the newer windscreen for a correct type. (I see you took my advice :). The horn is likely a UK replacement that I can live with. The saddest part is the rear body panel being eliminated. This can be rectified (no rush) as replacement body parts are available. Then at the ending, sadly, you have to spoil the whole works by wasting money and time on the postwar replica stuff. :( Having bemoaned this, if you object is to show the vehicle as a postwar UK service item, that is a different tale.

    • @andysmodelandstuff4306
      @andysmodelandstuff4306 2 месяца назад

      It's a WWII jeep alright, but it has been modified by the Norwegian Army in 1955, and that is how I mean to display it :) there are loads of WWII original jeeps still around here in Norway, but postwar modifications are quite rare and interesting, so this one is shown off as one of those

    An exceptional idea for a diorama. The vivid colors for a captured tanks that was put back in the field by opposing forces would be correct as are the hand painted crosses, both a level of authenticity most people might shy away from. As opposed to technical or artistic perfection, I believe a diorama should primarily convey details of an event. You had done so splendidly.

    tamiya super thin is not meant to be brushed on on the sides of the hull before you fit them together like old brush bottle glues! Clamp/tape the sides together, and apply it in the seams, it will wick in between, and disolve the plastic and evaporate welding the plastic together in no time at all. its a pure solvent glue, there are no thickeners added and should not be used like the old types.

    A bit of advice from Denmark: You changed out a perfectly fine original carb to manifold gasket. The repro ones with the copper bushings in the holes are crap, and should never have been invented. The copper prevents the gasket from compressing, and intake leaks are often seen with those. Find an original one without the copper bushings, or remove them from the gasket (or reuse the old one if it is not broken).

    Many thanks, Andy. I found your film fascinating, if sad and frustrating. My interest in Vita is with who she carried in 1941; she's mentioned several times in my research. Hopefully, an organisation - an oil company or similar, or an individual will step forward to save her. She certainly doesn't appear derelict, and clearly a lot of time, money and energy has already been spent. With a final push she can be saved for the benefit of all.

My goal about this video was to preserve the memory of Vita and her crew, but hopefully it can also serve as a reminder to how important it is to preserve our common history and the equipment used to preserve freedom. Vita's ending is sad, but atleast the money that should have gone to Vita in the future will be spent to preserve other historical ships

    So it seems like my video has caused a stirr in some circles! Therefore I would like to adress some points: - The cost of restoring the ship is calculated to be around 1,8- 2,0 million pounds, not 1,0 like I claimed in the video. - The timber in the hull has been throughly analysed by experts and found to be in very poor condition, although it apeared to me to be in good shape; this is not the case - Vita was lengthened and modernized in 1957, and few parts of the original Shetland boat is still part of the vessle today. She was therefore NOT perserved as a Shetland bus, but as an example of a traditional norwegian 1950- fishing boat. - Some parts have been salvaged from the ship and will be put on an exibit on The Coastal Museum of South-Trøndelag. I'm glad to get corrections on the things I was wrong about. One thing is to perserve history, but then we have to get it right. To learn more about the ship and the reasons for its scrapping, check out the ships official website here : kystmuseet.no/avhending-av-vita
