Figs In Michigan 2024, Part 1
September 16 was a great day to pick ripe figs. Thanks to a favorable weather (best this season), I had many varieties to pick at once. Dry, sunny days with average around 80F was welcomed after rainy, humid August. Many of varieties were new for me to taste, Proper taste review of each variety will be posted later. @backyardfigs

Very sweet fig Strawberry Verte, brix 43.5 - July 26, 2024
Просмотров 423Месяц назад
This is an example of how much sweetness a fig can gain if it starts to dry on a tree. Needed is a hot, sunny weather with low humidity for this to happen. You may find that this is too sweet for your taste buds, but it is a good exercise of being patient and experiencing something new. Srawberry Verte in this video had very high sugar content, brix of 43.5 @backyardfigs
How To Protect Fruit From Birds And Insects

Using Organza bags is a great way to protect your fruit and some vegetables organically. After placing this lightweight bags, your fruit will be sealed off from insects to lay eggs / feeding. First introduced to this bags by a fig growing community, I had found that it can be used with great results on other fruit. With grapes, this method of protection works especially well. Fertilizing fig trees when outside - There are many different methods and fertilizers for organic growing, these are my choices for 24' season. Don't assume that my way is the best, use this video as an idea and as a sample of what it can be used. Many growers use synthetic fertilizers with great results. First tour of my fig orchard in 2024, zone 6b , southeast Michigan. Helped with indoor grow room head start, many trees have ripe main crop. Some are finishing ripening of first, breba crop. This season started very wet, and I am forced to move some trees indoor if they are in ripening stage. In my main orchard I have about 70 varieties, mostly 4 years old. @backyardfigs Label Tags used for tre...

It was quite challenging to ripen this fig in our monsoon like weather conditions. Showers every day with high humidity. After keeping this tree in a shelter without watering for two days,, I got a pretty good quality figs. Still little diluted flavor but enjoyable to eat. Mostly figgy ( black mulberry ) flavor with nice light honey. This breba didn't have any raspberry ''tang'' flavor, will wa...
Prosciutto Fig Breba June 14 2024

First crop (breba) of Prosciutto was excellent. Almost approaching main crop in quality, sugar content (brix) of 26. This fig also had similar vanilla flavored honey sweetness, but with a twist. Instead of black mulberry, white mulberry flavor is predominant, followed by strawberry. A unique Adriatic type fig. ( Zone 6b, Southeast Michigan ) @backyardfigs
How to Transition Fig Trees From Grow Room to Sun Exposure

Another season of Transitioning fig trees, from growing under full spectrum lights to outside conditions and sun exposure. It is a process that takes time to gradually expose and adjust trees to a very different environment. During this time trees have to be properly fertilized and watered for reduced stress. Black Madeira Fig Breba 5-27-24

Queen of the figs by many, Black Madeira is not known for it's first crop (breba). Last year they all dropped, but this season I was able to pick the first out of three on this tree. Quality, just like CC breba was very similar to the main crop. Brix of 32, and would be closer to my estimation of 35 if more sugar from the skin was extracted. @backyardfigs Refractometer used in this video - amzn...
BFF Fig Breba May 2024
Просмотров 3583 месяца назад
One of my favorite varieties, Bass' Favorite Fig breba tasted for the first time. This one was the best out of the three breba's, quite complex in flavor, but not of the same intensity as the main crop. Also had less sweetness and a little bitterness in the skin. Still, very enjoyable. @backyardfigs

Excellent collection.
Your LSU Purple looks super round all of mine are long.
did HC ever weight over 100 grams?
No, the largest I had was around 40. I also like them when very ripe, and they become lighter with more intense flavor and sweeter.
Very informative, thank you. I would love to ask you some questions and concerns I have regarding my trees. Let me know if that’s possible. Thanks

I am surprised you can grow these figs so far up north. Also, surprised they grow in the pots for sooo many years. Good examples

Beautiful display. Thank you, sir. I know it's a lot to manage but it would be very helpful if you could offer a little more contrast across these many varieties. Sounds like they were all good but some must have stood out as favorites.
This was a good pick, many varieties were perfectly ripened. Violet Patlican, Bourjasotte Grise are consistently great (also very similar). Smith was great in drier than usual ripeness stage. Ponte Tresa keeps impressing me. I couldn't properly test all of them this time (finished filming at 3am ), but will post individual variety reviews at some point.
I grow LSU Purple...among others. It is a delicious fig.
Do you store them in garage in winter? Or have a green house?
@@Alv12594Most of the trees in the orange section were in the grow room in my basement. Rest were in a garage. I have older videos demonstrating this. Thanks for asking.
Those figs look good.
They were of high quality, ripened in hot, dry weather. Didn't have time to measure sugar brix in this video, but I did made more tasting review videos of individual varieties.

Thanks Zarko! Are the Adriatic JH similar to Green Ischia?
Both being adriatic type. I would assume yes, but I don't have Green Ischia.
@@backyardfigs Ok thanks, Are you going to sell some cuttings this year?
@RAH_youtube I don't have plans for cuttings sale, only rooted cuttings and mature trees 4+ years old. You can find cuttings on FigBid. Thanks for asking.
Hello sir it’s my pleasure too subscribe your channel i love growing figs Also from Michigan
@@ayadtobya4345 Thank you for watching and subscribing!
Do you have a video about pot sizes for figs? How big are your pots? It’s hard to estimate it. Thanks.
7 gal is my main size. Several in 10 gal. Younger trees in 3 and 5 gal.
Nice looking trees Zarco
When did you start waking up figs trees… under lights, this season?
@vil-vt7fr March 1st officially, but for about two weeks prior, I did pruning with occasional lights on.
@@backyardfigs thanks!
Hello Zarko, I have a question hopefully you can help. Have you ever used the Bonide Sulfur on your trees for Fig mites/ Mosaic? and if so did it work? Thanks very much
Yes. I apply this exact brand as a preventative during dormancy, before moving trees indoor. After that, individual trees are taken outside and sprayed if I notice any spider mites. Yellowing of the leaves is usually an indicator for inspecting for mites.
Magnolia, Texas thanks you!
what if you wipe off most jam on the device but at least leave some of its transparent, sticky liquid on it and see again if the test result of sweetness remains the same? I am just curious
Thanks for suggesting. I did that, and the results were about 0.5 % higher. I will make more tests with different viscosities. With fig as dry as this one, it is hard to extract enough juice to spread evenly without air pockets.
how much do they cost per how many?
There is an Amazon link in description. 500 bags 6x8 for $23, 500 bags 8x12 for $32
Yes. Very informative thank you!
Thank you.

26:45 is this one that you raves about the Adriatic JH or a strawberry something. I got a little lost there.
My mistake, I meant to say Strawberry Verte. Didn't know how to correct that on video, thanks for correcting.
@@backyardfigs thanks for response. Wasn’t trying to correct you I just was blown away by how great that fig looked and wanted to add it to my wish list. Great fig orchard 💪
how big are your pots? and what fertilizer do you use?
Hi, mostly 7 gal grow bags. Several larger trees in 10gal, younger in 5gal. I had posted a fertilizing video after this one.
How often do you apply the azomite? Thx
Two times, granular form. Thanks for asking.
Excellent video
Love your orchard. I was wondering what your fencing is made of? Are those 2"x2"s and 4"x2"s. Also, is that a plastic mesh? I have animals in my area I am afraid will attack my new fig trees. Any advice on that? Thanks
I've been asked many times, and hopefully soon will make a video explaining the built up of the cage. In short, those are round 2''x2'' posts, draped with deer netting.
Thank you for taking time to do a comprehensive update of your fig orchard. I watched the whole video and must say you are extremely skilled . Would love to watch a whole orchard tour. I did a lot of research on growing figs as espalier but found that they are hard to maintain as they don’t produce fruits in their spurs like apples or pears. However, I have seen a huge fig tree in Southampton university England Fan trained. Cheers Vinny
Thank you. My tree is just a fun project. Bottom espalier part was originally shaped like a heart. Main goal is to observe top growth. Espalier in figs can be very productive, in the east, that is the preferred form.
Can you tell me what you're using to wrap the pots to turn them white? Where did you get that material?
Hi, many have asked this question, I will explain in a separate video.
WOW, very impressive - you have inspired me to do the same for my back yard! I too am eager to see your how-to video on how you built the entire thing step by step from the frame, all the way to your new electric fence. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you. Hopefully soon I will make that video. This is my hobby that requires full time job involvement and finding time is challenging.
vườn cây trong chậu lạ mắt, đẹp quá
What are the white bags on the Pots?
Thank you for asking. I will make a video about white bags function. They provide many benefits, currently they preserve water evaporation when hot. if to rainy, by closing them they prevent excessive water saturation of soil media, and finally lower media temperature.
Wow! Beautiful trees! Thank you for sharing
Did you say that Black Zadar is also "Black Plate" or Pogácsafüge (Hungary/Croatian) ?
The way u said "Crna Petrovka" tells me you are from balkan, right?
Yes, Serbia.

Fig Orchard Tour July 11 2024
Excellent collection!! I give you an A+ I have several of these but would appreciate getting some more cuttings of other varieties. Do you have a way that I can contact you if you have cuttings available?
Thanks! As of now, I do not sell cuttings. I like to root cuttings myself, and confirm variety by leaves, if possible.
What’s your method for irrigation? Is it automated?
Main orchard, with watering can (collected rain water), other area with hose, filtered tap. I do find that my best results are achieved with manual watering, because of my setting. I will make video explaining the reasons why. Thanks for asking.
@@backyardfigs yes that would be a good video. How many gallons would you say you always have available? I need to get out of Phoenix 😂
I have two 275 gal totes connected. IDon't recall last time running out of rain water. it's been quite wet last couple of seasons. Having rain almost every other day, I wish that I was in Phoenix lol. @epigeneticnerd4244
Are you sure your white marseilles isn't a Tena? Because I have both varieties and your white marseilles looks like my Tena with the long finger leaves.
Thank you for commenting, you are correct ( just confirmed by looking at some pics from Ourfigs ). I got this tree in 2018 from Telly's, reputable local nursery with a label that has a nice short story about Thomas Jefferson and his favorite fig variety, WM. I did read some thread on Ourfigs about BM fmv free from pro fig that I have ( which turned out to be Tena), but not carefully enough, and assumed that this two are synonyms. Tomorrow I will change name on the label to Tena, and correct staff at Telly's, if they still have it. Thanks again!
