Thank you very much! I’m a big fan of Gary Numan’s work and he used the Roland D-50 synthesizer extensively throughout the late eighties and early nineties. The Soundtrack patch that can be heard - for example - in the intro of America is one of the finest patches ever designed by Eric Persing and it sounds great in this particular intro.

Thank you for your comment! I’m not sure if I will ever get to that, but I know most of the sounds and chords that have been used on that record so maybe someday in the future.

I add these kind of intros to these type of videos mainly because I’ve always felt these instruments were so beautifully designed and therefore shine a little bit of light on them! :) They were true instruments and still very much appreciated by both the original users as well as a newer generation of musicians like me. Thank you! And yes, this Gary Numan riff perfectly demonstrates the great ‘DigitalNativeDance’ preset from the Roland D-50 which in and of itself is quite a heavenly synth! :-)

It certainly stood the test of time and now it's a great classic that is still usable to this day :) Mine is from June 1987, but I bought it 30+ years later and still considerer it to be my first real ever synth. -Devin

Hi Sam and thank you for your extensive comment! Yes, synths that had sampling ram on board were incredibly expensive in those days (i'm from 1996 so this is not from experience, but from what I have read). Here in Germany, the company Hohner basically had the same Casio engines in some of their synths, only with a different housing (for the FZ-1 there was a Hohner HS-1). The Roland D-50 was my first ever real synth that I bought 30+ years after its original release; I programmed - and still program - it just by using the screen because the original controller as you mentioned as well as one made by a Dutch company (Dtronics) weren't/aren't cheap. I'm actually a little grateful for it because in hindsight; understanding the structures that came with the D-50, made it a lot easier to program some of my other synths. ​@@devingademan I bought my D-50 in 1987 one of the first batches in the UK IIRC. I wasn't really a keyboard player, more a 'sound-scaper' sort of person. But it was obvious to me, even after having had a few analogue synths and having been able to mess about with the DX-7 (which I really hated the dry, clang-y tones of!), that it was another dimension of synth. This was in terms of the sounds it could make AND the build quality. I sold my recording set up in the early 1990s as the unreliability of most of the analogue stuff (8 track tape machines, DATs etc etc) drove me nuts... I spent more time trying to make machines work than being creative. Since then digital stuff has made things easier... but I've kept it simple so while I make / set up guitars for a living, my only keyboard these days is a Roland digital piano :) These keyboards were ground-breaking in their time, back then in the mid-late 1980s when it was all Jupiters, Junos, DX-7s and E-mus :)

I'll take that second place after Chris Lowe anytime x

Apart from kick, shuffling hi-hats, bass + some strange percussive elements from the TG500, the song includes many tracks and a few of them are made with the MVS-1 Rack unit from 1995. It's a rack version of the SR-JV80-04 Vintage Synth expansion board, I believe SRX7 (for the Fantom) contains all samples of the unit as well. It's quite great both for digital and analog sounds and some of Roland's best drummachine samples are in it as well. That's a good point! Maybe a acid mix in the future for this song! I think it I can do that. -Devin
