Can the weighted end of your oboe swab damage your oboe?
In this video, we talk about a recent question that we answered on Facebook Live. One of our clients asked, "Do you think non-pull through swabs have a higher chance of the metal-weighted piece scratching the inside of an oboe on its way back out, or is it not something to be too concerned about as long as you’re careful?"

Do you also oil the lower joint?
Hello, Yes we recommend oiling all wooden surfaces, inside and out. Thank you and I hope you found this info helpful. -Jason
Thanks Jason - agree with keeping simple.
You're welcome. I'm glad you you found the info helpful. -Jason Onks

Can you tell me the name of the solvent you use?
We use Barge solvent or thinner. We also use the same brand contact cement. Thank you! Jason
Obviously.
Where can I buy the tools?

Thank you, we are glad it was helpful!
This just happened to me during an audition today 💀💀
What do you use on the black plastic to make it shine?
Clean and polish keys
Cork grease.... 2xs a day on any new instrument
It effs up the airflow of the air molecules at the base of the staple which is no longer a continuous bore after the reed is pulled out for all of the wrong reasons. Thousands of music teachers all over the United States need to learn this fundamental lesson. An Oboe teacher should be required for anyone taking up the instrument of the Oboe, as a student. Perpetual instability when the oboe reed is not seated properly.
Thank you very much! Why not using a swab instead of a feather which might loose small parts?
We have honestly never tried it. I would imagine it would be very difficult to effectively coat the bore with a swab. If small parts come off of the feather they very easily blow off with compressed air. Good Luck! -Jason
Thank you very much I am a new player so this helped!
Thank you Bella! Don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything regarding the oboe! Blessings, Jason Onks. www.onksws.com
@@OnksWoodwindSpecialists Thank you so mucha nd i will be needing much help
Very helpful, thank you!!!
Very super helpful. Thank you!!!
is any polishing cloth alright to use? if not what kinds would you recommend?
If you have silver plated keys, it would be best to use a polish cloth with silver polish chemicals embedded into it. The best we have found in 2021 is the silver polish cloth that Howarth of London sells. If you want to lightly wipe keys to remove fingerprints without the silver polish aspect any microfiber cloth should work fine. Thanks for reaching out. Blessings, Jason Onks
I'm an adult beginner after playing in junior hs. This is the best of 4 videos I have watched on the subject
Hi Diana, Thank you for your comment and we are glad it was helpful. We have lots of information on our website, www.onksws.com. You are also welcome to call anytime if you have oboe questions or concerns. 615-223-9015. Many blessings, Jason Onks
Thank you so much excellent
But what about the third octave???
Thanks Jared, it´s the half truth, for the Intonation is important ,first the way of blowing , then the material , you can change the length of the reed or width of the bacon, in every case check it out before the rehearsal... and than learn to listen, to tune your instrument , maybe you can have a look here ruclips.net/video/YgtyccZwoJk/видео.html
You can buy a small, cheap ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight to clean the vents.
Vinnie, Yes you can. My first ultrasonic was a cheap one that was actually given to me, very cheap. Lol. One of the biggest differences between a cheap model and an industrial model is heating. My industrial model has a heated tank and has lots of ultrasonic settings for different applications. It really does the job! Best of luck! Jason Onks
Couldn't you use a low wattage soldering iron?
Hey Vinnie, I'm sure a soldering iron would work fine. Just like with any heated tool, you don't want to burn or melt the oboe, just take precautions. Best of luck and thanks for commenting! -Jason Onks
I've watched a BUNCH of these videos, wanting to pass good information along to my students. You are the ONLY one that I've seen who reminds oboists to look for knots and tangles before swabbing! THANK YOU!
Thanks James! We are happy to assist however we can. If you or your students have questions, don't hesitate to contact us! www.onksws.com Blessings, Jason Onks
How do you clean the vents?

Like seeing the classic Nielsen duck in the background!
Mass-produced machine made oboe reeds can be horrible primarily because they want to mass produce them, so the cane they use is most likely very fresh or new cane prone to warpage and constant change. That would make the aperture wider or smaller from reed to reed. Then there must be a quality control inspection to grade them for soft medium or hard. 20% of them I would judge are viable for a student, and then the teacher to adjust to the student and the oboe. The oboe is more expensive to pursue, than the kazoo. But the kazoo never had the quality of beauty. Learning the oboe is an investment in education and perseverance for any young person with ability and a desire to play an instrument that is revered, for centuries before, and centuries into the future as long as we love orchestral type music, and more. I Got You, Babe 1965 Sonny and Cher.
Nice playing on the bass oboe dude..... at 2:45
Do you do replating services? If you do, do you have a video for it? thank you so much.
Hello Draizen, We do not have the ability to re-plate. We send all our plating to a plating facility. Thank you for commenting.
Hey Jason Check out dental wax knives or Le Cron Carvers. They work like an absolute charm for this
Wikus, Thanks for the information. These tools would be a great alternative to sealing octave vents!
Pure Lanolin ( not cream) works really well as a cork grease. Recommended by Peter Hurd. it can be a bit sticky, but a very tiny amount works well, and one of the beauties of it, is that it wipes off clean.
I haven't tried it but should be OK. We do not want "sticky" on our oboes, so be very conservative when applying. This would apply to all cork greases. Thanks Geoffrey!
What oboe adjustment books would you recommend?
I am only familiar with the Sawicki adjustment book because that's what I started with years ago. There are several others available and I'm sure they cover the basics also. I'll also recommend that you read this article: www.onksws.com/2013/03/17/oboe-adjustment-or-cleaning/ There is a big difference between adjusting and maintenance. I would recommend to all oboists that are going to use oboe as a career, that they know how to adjust. But the maintenance side is where they need to develop a relationship with a professional repairer. There are many things that turning a screw will not help. I hope this is helpful! -Jason
I thought that oboe is not that popular in USA, Good to know its getting better and better everyday! I wish I could be with u right now
Keep up the hard work and enjoy playing the oboe! Brand recognition is secondary to simply enjoying the oboe. Many blessings, Jason Onks
Poor Catherine 😫
Yes a little mortified at first, but she's OK!
Ouch!
She was OK!
My oboe teachers have always taught that intonation on the oboe is controlled by embouchure and has to be constantly adjusted, hence the need of developing a good ear hear when you’re not in tune with everyone else. We quite literally would spend entire lessons with a tuner playing scales slowly and listening and adjusting accordingly.
Thank you for commenting. Embouchure is also a large part of oboe tuning! Thank you for sharing.
Clarinet player just swabbing my new oboe for the first time "Hmm....maybe if I pull a little harder the silk swab will......oh crud....no no no no no....." thankfully I was able to take it apart and pull it back the other way. I'm going to get one of those swabs as I hate disassembling to clean since I swab about every 10 minutes during practice. Thanks!
Thank you for the comment. I'm glad we could help you!
What does this annual maintenance cost roughly? Oboes are such high maintenance instruments and everything is so expensive.
Hello! Thank you for your interest! Here is the link for our annual cleaning description: www.onksws.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/OWS-Annual-Cleaning-Set-up-Procedure.pdf. Please email me at office@onksws.com and I will be glad to give you a rough estimate! I look forward to hearing from you!
this helped me so much!
So glad to hear it, Abby!
Thank you for the video, very easy task. Now my first octave vent stays true (doesn't drop to lower octave). I'd be most appreciative if you can also make a video or make a blog post on the procedure for cleaning those octave vents. Cheers!
Loren, Thank you for your interest and suggestion. Please find our newest video on how to clean octave vents here: ruclips.net/video/iWFrfeCkzDg/видео.html Blessings, Jason Onks
Hi Todd, great tip for my players over here in Germany. waiting for more of those Franz
I'm just wanting to say, Thanks for the information you have put out here for people like myself. I love the sound this instrument puts out. I was lucky to get started by someone getting ready to throw one in the trash, thank God I knew what it was. Unfortunately I smoke, by the way I am 57, been smoking awhile. I tried, just don't have the wind. Again with thanks to all the tips on utube, I have been able to take it apart and save money cleaning and now in the adjustment phase. Hopefully when I think I have it completed, just maybe I can do better trying to play. If not, ..... Who knows
I'm going to give it a shot
The before pic looks like my school oboe currently. Can't wait to get it cleaned this summer!!!
You can get bees wax from an art supply store if that's your preferance.
Thank you for your comment. Beeswax has been the traditional wax for decades and does a fine job sealing oboe octave vents. We choose to not use beeswax because it is very "sticky." It tends to attract and capture dirt/dust, but the main reason is it is sticky. If beeswax gets on the octave pads it will tend to allow the 1st octave key/pad to stick down and not open. In our shop, we prefer to remove as many obstacles as possible so our clients can focus on playing beautiful music! Thank you for your comment. Blessings, Jason Onks
