In my opinion and according to elementary reasoning, Shaw's death at the hands of David would have been inevitable and let me explain: although she managed to self-explant the alien fetus on Lv 223, after 28 days her menstrual cycle should have generated another one and so on as she was infected by her boyfriend. So David would have been forced to take her life anyway, both so as not to make her suffer and so that she doesn't have to face the threat of the alien in her on the road.

Killing Noomi Rapace as Elisabeth Shaw off between Prometheus and Alien Covenant was the biggest mistake in the whole francise. So far she was the closest to be able to lift the heritage from Sigourney Weaver / Ellen Ripley.
