In this video, I will draft an 18-Century cap and prepare my fabric. This style of cap was very popular in Europe and the American Colonies during the 1770s and is easy to draft and hand sew. In the next video, I will hand sew the cap together. Thank you for watching! Website: tortoiseandplume.com Instagram: @tortoiseandplume Music: "Nocturne in C minor, B. 108" - Frederic Chopin
Machine Tutorial: Threading a Singer 28K
Просмотров 17 тыс.4 года назад
This tutorial demonstrates how to wind a bobbin and thread a hand-powered Singer 28K. This machine was manufactured in Clydebank Scotland in 1916. I regularly service and oil my 28K to keep it in good condition. The 28K is a great piecing and garment-sewing machine. Music: "Acoustic Folk Instrumental" by David Hyde. Quick Stitch: Machine Overcast Stitch
Просмотров 1115 лет назад
The overcast stitch is great for finishing raw edges and securing quilts before you bind them. This stitch is similar to a serged or overlocked edge, though only two threads are being used in the overcast. Be sure to use your overcast foot, and you'll be finishing your edges like a pro! Making a Regency Reticule // Part Two: Transfer & Beading
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.5 лет назад
In this video, I transfer my reticule pattern and apply the design. This project took about 6.5 hours to complete, mostly due to the spangle application. In Georgian and Regency embellishment, you will find that the spangles are not layered upon each other as they are in contemporary designs. Rather, they were spaced and sewn individually. The look is pretty, and does use fewer materials, but i...
Sewing a Machine Blind Hem

The blind hem is a great finish for trousers, tailored skirts, dresses, and curtains. It can look quite intimidating, but with this simple two-step process, you'll be sewing up blind hems in no time! Making a Regency Reticule // Part One: Patterning
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.5 лет назад
Hi, there! In today's video, I'll be patterning a Regency reticule! This small purse was ubiquitous during the Regency period, as the skirts of gowns were too slim for women to carry tie-on pockets. The style of reticule I'll be patterning is fairly common throughout the first half of the 19th century. I have two reference reticules, one from the Boston MFA, and one from a private collection. My handcrank Singer 128k seem to have an issue with winding the thread evenly on the bobbin pin. I am not sure if it has something to do with tension? Maybe the screw on the winding arm has to be adjusted?

This is a 128 not a 28K singer. You can tell bc the bobbin winder is up higher than the 28K

Not always! It has the thumb press tension release of a 28K.there was some crossover with bobbin winder placement. This is definitely a 28K

What are you using as an ironing sheet? I use a lot of starch and it gunks up fast. Wonderful tutorial.

Great video! Yours is a Singer 28, in these earlier models Singer didn’t incorporate the upper tension discs opening up with the raising of the presser foot, that was actually in the Singer 128 later on, which is updated version of the same machine. On this 28 model you just have to press on the metal knob right under the tension discs to open them up. I absolutely love these cast iron antique Singer sewing machines. Many are close or even older than 100 years old now and with a little cleaning and oil still sew as good as they did back then. Just make sure to get your wiring inspected if any of you have the electric version. Not hard to do for someone with some electrical understanding and experience. Well done!

Just a little tip - to get the shuttle out of the machine it is best to push down on the point of the shuttle. That raises up the whole back end of the shuttle making it easy to get hold of. Lifting the shuttle out by the spring can damage them bit-by-bit. Also, pushing down on the point is easier. :-)

When I make a pattern like this I make the markings on one side, cut out that side then fold the paper in half and use the cut side as a template for the uncut side. This way I ensure the outside line is perfectly symmetrical.

This is very fascinating, but I'm finding your video hard to watch. It seems that right when I want to see how you're making a stitch, your hand goes in front of the camera so I can't see the detail. It's also too fast - I had to reset to half speed, but still missed a lot. Perhaps I'm not experienced enough to understand your method, and this is intended for more advanced sewists than I. It's very beautiful!
