Lol!!! This was a great review. A guy gave me a copy of this book a long time ago and told me I reminded him of Midori. Now, years later and lots of therapy, I cringe at the thought of that 😂 I enjoyed the writing and found the story interesting, but nothing about this book is flattering to women in any way!

I got halfway through it and threw it away. I'm not joking, I legit threw it away. The way he writes women pisses me off, his prose is dull, and the story itself wasn't that engaging. Thank you for shitting on this book!

this was such a relief to see someone else hate on Murakami! after having read so many of his books, im disappointed in myself for taking so long to realize how shitty some of his writing is! Some of his books are genuinely really good like 1Q84, After Dark, and Hard-boiled Wonderland and The End of The World, as well as parts of Kafka by The Shore and Wild Sheep Chase, but even in my favorite Murakami books there's so much of his fetishes and creepy fantasies awkwardly dropped into the story (most notably his thing for ears and pedophilia...) that I've gotten into the habit of editing out in my mind as i read. His magical realism and imagery are great, but the man's a huge misogynist and a creep. You'll HATE wind-up bird chronicle, i'm so baffled as to how so many people say it's their favorite book.

good review. this book doesn't hold itself, i guess it even wants to hide it's flaws with a mysterious, sort of 'metaphorical' way. but still, i agree with you that what shines in this book is that introspective writing style, really, i don't think i would like it if toru wasn't described to 'iron clothes alone and get his shit together'. to me, it gives that sense of wanting to live far from the past, even if it haunts you. goodnight punpun vibes
