The thing is, she also does it to him in Before Sunset. The same scene, after she’s gone off about her troubles, and he is talking about how lonely and desperate for affection he is from his wife. She goes to pat his head, but stops herself. God how hard I relate to these scenes, it kills me

I like his point, that love is the universal theme and story that everyone would relate, so if we are to look for the best movie, it should be in that genre. In novel, one of the best, some would argue is the best, is Anna Karenina, in short story is Lady with Little Dog, which is unanimous, Romeo and Juliet for play, and peom is filled with romance. That said, for me, the best movie ever made is In the Mood for Love. The only reason why it is not overlooked now, as the fate of so many Chinese Movies masterpieces such as Raise the Red Lantern, is just critics cannot overlook it simply because of how good it is. A little note, is those I mentioned, all of them centers around affairs, so that's quite an interesting pattern for best in storytelling medium.

It's hard to appreciate how good magnolia is. For me, the movie is itself an achievement, like how can you put so many fascinating characters that is worth a movie of their own, put them together seamlessly, and make the audience relate for each. I don't think that's ever been done in film before. I would consider magnolia as the War and Peace of cinema in terms of the scale of characters, and PTA as Tolstoy minus the mastery of realism. And characters is the greatest strength of PTA, and magnolia is the peak of his ability.

Amazing episode! I love how Intermission really cuts through the noise of the current social media film culture and asks the kind of questions that allow the love of both the making and appreciating cinema outside the box. Films less mentioned and discussed anywhere else, here have a light shown on them with both conception and realization being spoken of with so much love. Great work! Hallie is a tremendous filmmaker. Looking forward to Goodrich.

Really enjoyed this episode of the podcast. A lot was covered and really spoke to me. Mosely is an actor/filmmaker I need to keep better track of as well as keep in mind. As Frank mentioned, movement is a big part of the camerawork in the film, but a couple of shots from The Passenger that jumped out to me while listening are both representative of the theme of freedom and moving forward; One of Maria Schneider sitting up in the car looking back. And an image of Nicholson miming a bird as he hover from great heights over the blue sea. Also massively worth noting the DVD release for this film has the one and only commentary from Jack Nicholson and it is so special. It's a side of Nicholson I imagine only those close to him probably glimpse. I urge you to seek it out and listen. You won't regret it :)

Well, can't fault Austin Butler for actually ACTING in a movie if it's true. Actors aren't just supposed to play themselves after all. Weird criticism imho.

    • @SuperJaspersmom

@ghostchick5276. I could not agree more. I mean, evil Darth Vadar was brought to immortal status by....a life-long STUTTERER. Glenn Close was nominated for an Oscar in a role that required a promiscuous, sensuous, desirable man-stalker in "Fatal Attraction.". She was so incredible, playing way, way, way against her real-life self and movie-goer expectation, I spontaneously jumped up in the movie theater and gave a solo standing ovation. Austin Butler could not be cooler on that motorcycle, with his real-life introverted, pottery-throwing self!
