Motorcycle reviews, mods and general thoughts.
On the 2023 Kawasaki KLX300sm - 2,000+ Mile Review and My Thoughts On Riding a 300cc Motorcycle.
In this video, I talk about the mental tug-of-war I have been experiencing of owning a 300cc motorcycle and why I think I want something with more power - To satisfy or not to satisfy...is that the question?
It's funny to want something you don't really need...and need something you don't really want.

New year, new bike! In this video, I give a first impression on the 2023 Kawasaki KLX300sm.
Is it fun or not ?
Totally fun, for sure
It's simpler for me after riding 60 years of riding - motorcycles are fun ! Riding is better than not riding. Turn off your brain and enjoy the ride.
They are fun for real😊 they are not fast and they are not heavy you can ride all day and not break the bank
Heck yea brothaman!
That dirt bike comment got you a sub bro
What happened to Bubba? No more Bubba posts.
I had to take a little hiatus from making content but I’ll be back…for sure 😀
You are so right i gave up my zx6 for a supermoto 😊😊 on my face
😂
It's funny you mentioned the mt07. I've been wanting one for a while, but i really like the 300sm and i think my plan is to get a 300sm, keep it and get an mt07 or mt09.
100 gallons? Damn lol
Funny you’re the only one that mentions it! 🤣 good catch!!
@bubbazanetti6657 I seen it a couple of years ago and got lost on re 650 gt. The swung back around to supermotos lol
Mate that RMX450 was stripped of basic parts it comes with originally. I mean the licence plate tail, turn signals, all the buttons, mirrors, lights comes from factory and it all works well. Since it's all missing it would be a pain in the ass to source it all and install, then get it properly registered with licence place and maybe insurance, if you location requires it. If the price is a bargain then of course worth it, but other.. nah. I also got RMX450Z (2012) and its great enduro bike for offroad and woods, but kinda tough for city daily riding - the short gears, stiff clutch, the seat, fuel consumption etc. This is all addressible but then again its extra expenses everywhere.
@redpepper007 Thanks for the input. I ended up opting out of that buy some time ago, mainly because of what you mentioned about city riding. I know it's a dirt bike but I had the idea of using it as a supermoto, as I ride on the road more often than not. The ride factor was fun, upon first impression but then I got to thinking about the long haul and how it would fair for daily use. Ultimately, I thought it wasn't going to work for me - Good bike though, I just wasn't going to use it for what it was actually built for...off-road.
@bubbazanetti6657 happy to share my experience. Actually also the maintenance should be considered, as it requires oil n filter change every 1000km, plus the air filter washing and oiling. 1000km in city collects quite quickly, but on the trails it's a long time. And after 10k+ km it's time for engine rebuild 😀
Haha didn’t even consider that but glad to know I made the right decision, at least for my riding style 👍
You ever true the wheels?
Have not done so
What mirror is that?
@mikeykelley7071 it’s a CRG blindsight bar end mirror.
3500 on the tires right. Couldn't understand that part for some reason. Around 9:00
Yes, 3500 but I’m actually at 7800 miles now and still on the original tires! The rear tire is flattening out in the center but the treads are not faded yet.
I have the dual sport version. Did all the usual mods, delkevic exhaust, kdx snorkle, 02 and secondary throttle delete. It really wakes it up ,I'm guesstimating 5 or 6 horsepower, and because I ride on the road more than I thought I would I geared it up .(15t sprocket in frt ) and I'm going with more street oriented tires. I love the versatility and the fun.
I couldn’t keep the Delkevic…it was too loud for my taste but definitely a good slip on.
@@bubbazanetti6657 I run mine open, but I thought it was pretty quiet with the spark arrestor in.
I love how the 2024 looks ,have to pick one up before the summer
@jasonpimentel5226 🙌 it’s a good bike, for sure. Kawasaki products are really good!
@@bubbazanetti6657 having a hard time choosing between the Klx300sm or a ninja 500,the ninja 500 has more bang for buck with the amount of the tech you you get for the same price and it’s a good looking bike but the klx looks like so much fun,I won’t be doing no high way driving just mostly in town
@jasonpimentel5226 yea I totally feel you. IMO, you can’t go wrong with either one. It’ll just come down to what you will be using it for. The KLX is a great commuter bike - the powerband is not comparable to the 500 bc you’ll obviously be getting better pick up with the 500. But the KLX is fun bc you can rev it out and it will reward you. And moreover, you can take it off-road if you desire. Whatever you choose, have fun and ride safe!
Veri nice moto
Can I learn wheelies on this stock ?
Absolutely!
@@bubbazanetti6657 awesome ! Looking at a 2023 but it new stock so I was curious on how I guess the powe band and how it pulls !
got 150 miles on mine so far. loving it so far!
@denox420 The more you ride it, the more you realize how much you can appreciate it. 😁
@@bubbazanetti6657 at 1,250 miles now. And got a few mods on it like after market controls. Love it to bits still tho!
The stock power on the klx300 is pathetic. It’s like 1970’s power and just gutless on the bottom end. Taking out the secondary throttle plate, an exhaust, and O2 delete really makes it into a new bike, but will never be like a KTM or Suzuki. If Kawi reworked the head, cams, and exhaust and got it up to like 30 or 35 whp without loosing the reliability, they would have a real winner on their hands. The suspension and efi are awesome, it just needs some more power
I hear you - and I respect your opinion.
looking at the klx300 dual sport and SM to go with the KLR650. The KLR is almost too heavy for tight trails/woods riding, but want to be able to take it on the road. Does the SM work pretty good off road also? I noticed they offer a big bore kit now for it.
@eminiscalperpro9729 it’s a great bike for off-road trails for sure, but you would probably want to slap on some proper knobby’s for that. You don’t want go off-road with the street tires it comes equipped with.
For a street bike eventually after i get more experience, iam definitely going get a kawasaki z650rs those are just the best looking bikes on market right now, the z900 rs probably to much for me for a while but iam going to work my way up progressively on faster bigger bikes, but my next progression will likely be the klx300sm or maybe the crf rally 300
Ill have what ur having lmao..seriously i am definitely considering a klx 300 sm in spring, also bud get u a wheelie bar for back wheel can cut ur wheeling learning time down from months to days, and I get lot of waves on my ruckus i daily drive, because I daily drive in winter, do grocery shopping, i do way more riding than 90% of Harley riders, so iam the real biker!!
I have the same exact color and year love the bike I'm at 480 miles still have another100 mikes or so until fully broken in so see yours and hearing what you got to say I'm excited to see the gains when I fully break it in and put some mods on it
For a Bike that light. No need for more than 35 HP ..with street tires. No frills, just Meat and Potatoes. Going from A to B. I'd call it .."Tow Joe, A to B" !
@par4par72 Couldn't have said it any better myself!
2022 Models like new are now seeing $5k used pricing, probably because of the 2024 cosmetic rework. Finally us poor types can abide! $7500 out the door a year or two ago was just too much.
@Noisycowonline Totally agree with that statement. Honestly, there’s good value/investment when purchasing a used motorcycle, especially when one can realize the resale value of a specific brand (ie; Honda, Kawasaki, etc.) The KLX has proven to be a good asset for those looking to learn on or an experienced rider looking to add to their stable, all the while holding its value if they decide to move on to another motorcycle, for whatever reason. Personally, I enjoy riding motorcycles in general and have made the decision to finance the KLX brand new, only because it was a good option for me at the time, but of course, that isn’t the case for everyone. Purchasing or financing a used motorcycle is worth it so long as a person is able to take some time to do research on the history of the potential purchase, making sure it has been treated with a degree of care, in order to enjoy it without the stress of spending more money on it for repair, and genuinely want to spend time on said purchase, with out having the overwhelming feeling of outgrowing or getting bored of it, hastily.
Hey love your perspective! I was also torn between choosing a KLX300XM and CRF300L (sumo build). But not some how contented with the speed output. But your right that's where the subconscious biased comes in. We as a people tend to hyped that we need more speed, but at the end of the day we will never be contented even if we reach to that point. Thanks for reminding that we need to enjoy the now! Great content!
@johnleonardlee6735 I’m glad you feel good about this. Ride safe out there and appreciate the gift that is the present. 👍

I enjoyed your video I feel the same about mine such a fun bike and i don’t need to go any faster.
My friend recently got a 22 klx300 and i got it up to 93 pretty sure its bone stock
Before you switch to a 450 learn how to wheelie the 300 bro you'll have so much more confidence knowing how to control the wheel being off the ground. You don't have to crank dank nooners and scrape but by all means I would try to at least get some clutch ups out of the way and learn the rear brake cause once you get that 450 you're going to be getting that front wheel off the ground daily lol.
Biggest hp gain. Remove the secondary throttle plate.
I'm an old hot rod guy, so I can't leave things alone if I can get more power, especially if it's cheap or free. Ive done the typical intake and exhaust mods and got modest gains .the biggest gain by far was by removing the secondary throttle plate. Much happier with the. Bike and no cost.
I’ve thought about it, maybe I’ll pull it out at some point in the near future.
Manufacturers have to meet emissions which include noise emissions and the intake can make as much noise as the exhaust which is why they include baffling for each. So naturally the intake will be louder if it is modified. If you let more air in you'll have to let more air out because essentially that's what an engine is an air compressor.
Dude you need to pay cash for bikes.
@TrustedSilver1987 You’re right. If I could I would, just don’t have it like that tho. 😒

Felt that, next time I am gonna take the clutch wire off and do it over again I have to order a new clutch sensor too now
Drop the rear sprocket tooth 1 tooth. And you could consider the z400 if you're not interested in doing 100mph often as your 2nd bike. Z400 will to 85mph all day and tops out at 106mph, seating position is like dirt bike
I installed a slip on , on my z400 with no trouble, no ejk. But I have heard if you change either the air filter to hi flow OR slip on muffler, DONT do both without the ejk or tuner or a dyno-tune at a moto shop
Agree! Also, I ended up keeping the stock exhaust - I can appreciate its simplicity. The bike performs more than fine.
I wish they would make a 450 version
@Jason P That would be pretty awesome
How much do these cost now?
$6,299.00 new.
@@bubbazanetti6657 I have found two gently used ones for $6,000. I suppose that may be fair considering there would not be the extra fees.
I concur. 😁🙌👍
Felt buyers remorse when I first bought the CRF300L, but when it got stolen I missed it big time. Still miss it. Love to have a smaller bike to just jump on and go rip around, but at first it felt like a scooter with a clutch. I found many uses for it and rode it more than my FJO9. I rode the thing to work and back every day 30 miles or so. One recommendation. Skip the MT07 and get the MT09 for your bigger street bike. Trust me my friend. You will be happier with the MT09. It’s a very nimble bike and it has modes and traction control etc…. Ride it in rain mode for the first couple of days. Or the the other recommendation would be the Tenere 700. Great all around bike.
@C Neiner I appreciate the feedback but I've had a change of heart - 6 months into riding a Kawi motorcycle and I've converted. Granted, I may feel the same about Yamaha but I've yet to ride one. That said, I'm now looking into another Kawasaki model - nothing personal on Yamaha, It's just the path I'm on, at this time. However, given how much I enjoy riding motorcycles, I'm sure I'll get around to trying (and most likely, purchasing) a Yamaha.
I'm selling my 2017 09 & thinking about getting the KLX. I'm 66 years old & the Yamaha just demands to much attention to ride it fast, for me anyway. It's like it is just waiting for me to make a mistake so it can pounce. I'm pretty sure the little Kawasaki would be more fun & more forgiving. If there's such a thing as too much fun it's the 09's motor.
Dyno numbers before and after will show any gains / losses
Hi Bubba, I just picked up my 2023 KLX 300SM today an rode for 2.5 hours straight. Things are a bit stiff and sluggish right now but my feeling is that the bike will open up after the break in period. I have the windshield from T-Rex racing to install this weekend and a luggage rack and tail bag too. Keep riding man and be in the moment like you said!
Congrats! Seems like you're prepping for some good fun rides - and yes, it will open up but I think maybe sooner than you think!! 😁 At least it did for me...it was around the 100 mile mark. Regardless, have fun and ride safe!
@@bubbazanetti6657 Thanks Bubba Z
I own a 22 klx300sm With 11000 miles. It opens a little more at 2000 miles too. Or 2500.cant recall. The mods do make a difference. But it's still a 300cc bike. But it's fun to go through those gears. Very fun bike. And I agree with your thoughts. of the bike. Be blessed
@@markwilliams34-sz6mk I am at the 600 mile point and it has not opened up yet. I am following the break-in procedure as outlined in the owners manual and this week I take the bike in for it's first oil change and break-in service. In 6th gear at 60 miles an hour it seems to be screaming rev wise and I hope that tapers off soon. Did you experience the same?
Stock bars?
@Chris Right I got rid of the stock bars and installed the ProTaper Red Bud Mid - Better quality and a bit wider.
Thanks! Any issues with cable slack? I hear a ton of people talk about cables being too short for aftermarket bars.
@@chrisright2602 I’ve heard that too but the bike mechanic fixed the slack for me after he installed the bars.
@Chris Right I added the link to the ProTaper handlebars in the description.👍
Personally I would opt for a power commander vs the EJK. Few more bucks but way more options for tuning. IMO a tuner/fuel controller is a must. While the stock ecu may be able to compensate some for the lean mixture, it’s designed to meet emissions standards and will never give you the fuel needed to balance out your air/fuel ratio. Some may not feel it’s necessary, and that’s their prerogative. From experience I always think a bike is running good and then I get it tuned and am surprised how much it can be improved.
I hear that - honestly, I'm satisfied with how the bike runs after the air flow mods...there's a significant difference. I'm also not in the financial position to purchase a power commander/EJK for 1, 2 or 3 horsepower more?...Nah, I'm good.
I’m not sure if you’ve seen this yet, but there’s a ton of great info in this video about the air fuel mixture and other power adding mods with dyno proof to back it up. I removed the secondary throttle plate on my klx and it was a totally different bike. There’s definitely a noticeable difference in the mid rpm range that made it more fun ride. Video link: ruclips.net/video/KdwUUHo0IVk/видео.html
youre gonna lose money on the trade in, better to sell it for cash. bro u just got it, you dont need another bike...whyu testing out the 450? Man, bikers never are happy with their rides.
@brightinthemiddle You right but…it’s not that I’m not happy with my ride - I think I’m just addicted.
Also I will say. Get the o2 delete plug it helps. My bike is full mods list with power commander and my dads bike is full mods except 2nd throttle plate delete and no tuner and i always pull on him.
Did you notice a difference in performance, immediately after deleting the o2...or did it take a few days to adjust? Only reason I ask is bc I did the o2 for 1 day and did NOT notice a difference.
I find that the mods I’ve done so far, (KDX Snorkel, K&N Air Filter) have been sufficient enough to adjust the ecu to the extra air flow. Granted, I still am running the stock exhaust, the bike runs significantly better than stock…Is it worth deleting the o2 sensor with a stock exhaust?
@Bubba Zanetti probably not. With after market exhaust I did notice a difference between my dad's bike and mine when he did the delete he gained some pull on mine.
I love how we start to look more and more like a power ranger with our matching clothes and bikes
@CookieKing Low key...I even do the power poses before getting on the bike.
