Does LiTime Have THE BEST Lithium Trolling Motor Battery For Under $300? - Group 24 100Ah
If I installed that shunt on a 36v system with 3 batteries, would it give me the Ah remaining on 1 battery or all 3?
If switching from an existing (3) 12v in series setup to this single 36v, do you need to update the boat wiring? I'm noticing my current boat (Phoenix) has (2) positive cables and (2) negative cables currently hooked up. Would I just use 1 of each or can I connect all 4 wires to the single battery?
I, am working in a moto school in Québec where we have long winter 4 year ago we change all the batterie for lithium and kept them all winter long on intelligent charger in the spring 5 months later, all the bike started but all the batterie were not able to keep there charge So we haded to change them all again only after only one year. The next winter we were advised to charge them only one time in the middle of the winter for a day only, which we did, never have a problem since They lasted. we are talking 15 Honda 500 so I completely agree on what you talking Thanks for the video from a French Canadian 👍😊
"Probably in one of two boats"... pun intended? lol.
💯%!
Can you please make a video of how you do a capacity test?
Micheal, what are the reasons a lithium batteries protection system will shut your battery down ? I know letting it go to 0 volts will shut it down. So if I’m on my boat and battery shuts down what are all the causes? And how would you get it back on while you are on the water ? Have ever had one that had plenty of charge turn off on the water ?
Depends on the BMS, this seems to be a symptom of using a non-starting or dual-purpose battery in a starting application. The outboard continues to charge and the battery can't do anything with that power so it disconnects. The BMS usually turns off around 10.5v as Lithium cells do not recover when ran down lower. Typically. I'm not sure if you're referring to being out on the boat and "the battery shuts down", if that is in a trolling application or cranking? I've never had that situation with any of the batteries.
@ has your BMS ever turned a battery off trolling or Duel purpose while you were on the water ?
Nope. Never.
What happens when you don’t charge them and run out of battery on the water because you were trying to keep them in a range that you can’t actually measure?
There are aftermarket solutions for monitoring battery SOC as well as batteries available with bluetooth connectivity. It can actually be measured. Given that, I would expect the operator has an idea of the expected consumption during a day of fishing and accounts for that before going out. It should be an abnormal situation that would cause the battery to be completely depleted, like the outboard dies for other reasons and you have to troll for miles.
Just charge to 14V with full absorption no harm done no matter how often you charge. Calendar aging is going to have more effect on cell life than constantly charging to 14 or 14,2V
How do you check the capacity of a battery?
I use something like this that pulls a load and monitors the output of the battery to determine usable capacity. amzn.to/414I0uL
Looks like a good option for a trolling motor, but a little overpriced for stationary solar battery bank, where size and weight don't matter as much as bulk storage.
That's a fair point, it's a little pricier than other options.
can you try to look at some 24 an 36 volt also
Hello - I have a recent video on a 24v 50Ah. I've done a video on a MillerTech and LiTime 36v. I also have a Redodo 36v that I am currently testing!
Would the BMS system not manage the charge cycle to optimize these ranges- for example the power-pole charge? It seems logical to me that the BMS should account for this so all you have to do is plug them in and let the BMS manage the charge cycle?
With all of the bluetooth connected batteries now, they really need to add more functionality to the app. It's a missed opportunity by the manufacturers. Rather than just letting us see the status, we should be able to set charge limits and every "X" cycle let it charge to 100% to let it balance. Shouldn't be hard to do!
So is there a way to test your batteries capacity?
Yes sir. The basic way I use is one of these testers. Charge the battery and it records the wattage consumed and gives you the results. amzn.to/48P78Hv
So you are saying a DC to DC charger in an automotive application is no good
Everyone has different needs, the battery needs to do the job first. From there, you can evaluate the best way to manage it. Keeping the battery at or near 100% for the majority of the time is not ideal.
@@goodmanfishing if this is the case why Do I need a DC to DC charger for lithium with higher charge rate 14.6 or 13.6 float I should be able to just use a standard charger that doesn’t go as high as they say needed for lithium batteries
I just bought 2 WattCycle batteries. It was recommended by another popular channel, before I discovered your channel. I’m very happy to see that you also recommend the choice.
Good choice!
Loved the video. Thanks. I'm curious of what you think about the Watt Cycle 12v 300AH Mini battery. I'm thinking of building a couple of power boxes with this battery as the storage component.
That is a lot of capacity at 12v. Have you considered going to a higher voltage for your application?
Great educational video. I appreciate it. I have the same motor as you, similar boat. My question is what top RPM were you running on the prop you chose?
Right at 6000 loaded. Using Vessel View for the rpm, not the stock tach (it's way off)
@@goodmanfishing thanks
Tanks for edvice bro, mucho apreciado 😎
No problem!
I wonder how much damage I’ve done? Charged it to 100% seventy times this summer. Now I know! I will draw it down to 50% for winter storage. Thanks for schooling us.
I bet you're in good shape, hope it helps!
I tought the larger DOD the less cycles the batteries have, and also if the discharge is under 20-30% is does not even count as a cycel by some manufactors ?
Cycles are really throughput. If you discharge a battery 50% then charge it 50%, that is 1 cycle. You have moved 100% of the capacity through the battery.
@@goodmanfishing so draining the battery completely is 2 cycels? Looking at Victron & Relion datasheets and trying to make sense of this.
My manufacturer states ro xharge to 14.6v. it seems very high compared to other brands.
The charger will charge at high voltage. The BMS will limit the actual voltage of the pack to ~13.4-13.6v
Im using roughly 20% of my 60ah lithium battery when im out one day. Usally I dont charge it until I know im having more company in the boat or if im going away for 2-3 days.
Sounds like a good way to go
Good information, this is the way we take care of our RC airplane batteries.
Glad you found it useful - RC batteries have a lot in common with those used in boats.
Unfortunately they don't work when it's cold. Rather have a c Delco voyager battery the last ones I had worked for 8 years then I put them in my wife's bass boat. She ran them for 5 years don't care mutch for your mouthwash
So how do you read the charge in it. Because it will run till is completely used up. How do you get a good reading
Many batteries now have bluetooth that will show you the SOC. Some batteries have a screen on the top that do the same thing. for the rest, you will need to use a Shunt or Hall Effect style battery monitor to watch the current come in and out of the battery to estimate SOC.
I'm looking to upgrade to lithium for next season and trying to decide if 1 24v 50ah battery will cover my needs. This video was very helpful!!
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative. Thank you. How do you find out the capacity of your lithium battery?
Many batteries now have bluetooth that will show you the SOC. Some batteries have a screen on the top that do the same thing. for the rest, you will need to use a Shunt or Hall Effect style battery monitor to watch the current come in and out of the battery to estimate SOC.
Awesome to learn this! So if I only have one charger connected to the lithiums and the agm - do I need two chargers now or is there a way to easily disconnect the lithiums? How do you do this? Maybe just let the agm be charged by engine when not charging all three?
The easiest way I have come up with is to buy a simple "maintainer" and install it on the AGM battery. Plug that in when you get home. Before you go fishing, plug in the lithiums.
So have you used it on your boat? I just made one for two finders, so far pretty nice
Very good information, however, I was looking for something a little more technical, as in charge rates in amps, and specific voltages so that I could monitor this stuff more closely and get it right.
Bro, I was both. I would fish, come home and put it directly on the charger. And all my lithiums are 100, 2-125ah and a 135ah. Just over the last couple months I’ve started getting at least 2 trips of fishing before charging. All my fishing trips are 4-8hrs. I will definitely use this info and run with it. Thanks so much. I do believe I was using Lithium Pro LiFePo4 also and had gotten pretty frustrated with them dying and malfunctioning on me. Now I know why.
Sounds like you'll be good-to-go!
Ditto!!
Is the Li Time group 31 12.8v 100ah enough to power my 55lb thrust trolling motor for my jonboat? If so how long will it last me in a day(hrs) I usually keep my trolling motor setting on 2 or 3..
Great & awesome video!!! Thanks for sharing those tips. Very helpful. I don't own any lithium batteries yet but maybe looking into getting them once the regular acid batteries run their course. Any advice for the acid batteries?? Stay Safe & God Bless!!! 🤠👍
Thanks! For lead-acid batteries, don't discharge them below ~50%, ever. Keep them charged up/float charging and try not to let them freeze!
I keep my boat slipped most the time. I fish often but not many 8 hr days. I usually get 12 to 15 hrs (approximately) before I charge. What worries me, I charge on a generator and that may or may not be good I don't know. I also have a balancer on my three batteries if that helps, again I don't know. Thanks for the video. PS my next trolling motor setup will be a 24 volt.
Lithium and water DONT mix See examples on RUclips I ALWAYS run regular batteries they last plenty long enough
Don't own lithium batteries but it makes sense, I charge my batteries as soon as I get home so I can see why lithium owners would do exact that.
Makes sense! I was the guy that charged them after every outing!!! LOL I think I read on FB one of your comments about this a little while back and mine have been unplugged since..... I just added another 100ah so I have 36v for my trolling motor.... thought it would make my boat faster, but it really didn't.... I'm going out to the garage now and turn some stuff on and left them get down in the sweet spot.... thanks!!
Did you see the latest video from DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse about Lithium battery care ?
Learned something, just in time, because I just started using LiPo. Thanks.
Glad you found it helpful!
I get that, but most quality batteries are rated for thousands of cycles. Most have 10+ year warranty. Better brands aren’t prorated warranties. If I get 6+ years I’m happy. If they last the warranty of 10 years, that’s great. But I’ll probably have new ones by then. When it comes to lithium, they are constantly getting better and less expensive. They will have evolved a lot in 10 years. I personally dont care about trying to get the full 5,000 or 10,000 cycles. I fish at least once a week, use 30-50% of my 60ah 36v. And 30-60% of my 100ah 12v electronics battery. I’m going to charge them every time. I’ll never ever come close to even using half the life. I’m sure you know if you use 30-50% like I do, then charge, that’s not a cycle. It takes at least two trips to register one charge cycle for me and most people. Even if I used a full cycle every trip, that’s 52 per year roughly. If I kept them 10 years, that’s only 520 cycles. But in reality, it’s more like 210 cycles in 10 years. Most of us will never reach the full life cycle. But I know people have had them from the beginning and never had an issue and still have their original ones. Hell, in a lot of cases, it’s probably better to kill it quicker. Then when they warranty them, you get a new battery and not only that most likely a better battery as cells and BMS technology is evolving. The 36v I just bought this a newer model, and the old version with different 18650 cells isn’t available anymore. so if I had the old one and killed it, I would get the new one or it minimum a really good discount on the new one which would be nice because if you want new batteries every 5 to 10 years could get a really good deal on new ones instead of buying them for full price
Will Prowse says to charge to 100 percent. This makes BMS balance cells.
That is correct. I don't see the value in always charging to 100% with LFP, however.
I bought 2 lithium LiFePo4 batteries .. what do i need to measure the amount of charge remaining so I stay in the sweet range?
There are aftermarket battery monitors that can be used, but they must be a shunt or Hall effect type. Amped outdoors has a nice one
What is the better option 2 12 V 100ah or a 24V 100 for trolling motors?
Did you see (DIY Solor Power with Will Prowse today ? He kinda went against some norms of Lithium Battery Management!!! Have you ever checked his channel out ? He’s a Major lithium battery Nerd 😀
What is the voltage of a 100% charged battery?
Depends on the balance and the variance between the cells. Usually 13.4v-13.6v
Another thing that is awesome about the Bluetooth option on the LiTime isthe deactivate feature! With my phone I can just shut the power off to the leads with a press of a key!
I have the LiTime 24 volt 100 amp hour with Bluetooth! It goes in the hidden space below the rods in the bow of my Lund! The Bluetooth allows me to monitor and only charge when I get below 40%. I do not mount my 24 volt 20 amp lithium charger in the boat in order to protect it from damage. I ran a 10 g line to a storage compartment in the deck to easily hook up the charger without digging out the rods!
The name for these monitor : Battery Coulometer .
When you use solarpanels the batteriets will stay fullt charge, most of the time. How about that?
It depends on how you setup your solar charge controller. They don't have to charge to 100%.
Ok I will check my MPPT
Been using one of these in the 31 group for over a year now in my tool trailer to power interior lights. It's been great but struggling in winter to keep it warm enough to use/charge. The truck doesn't charge enough while towing. I have to plug the trailer in 2twice a month usually to keep up with my power usage. Anything for keeping these warm? Solar panel and battery heating blanket? Litime has the 31 non Bluetooth on sale for 178 ea. I'm going to pick up 2 or 3 more to get more capacity.
