You would be just as amazed by our local players, rugby is a religion here. You can get decent airfares from around $12OO US. You would need to come in winter (your summer) to see rugby played, as it is a winter sport. If your into skiing you can ski on real mountains And live volcanos !!!! And enjoy the hot pools (geothermal hot water). A camper van would be your best bet (make sure it has good heating) there are car ferries between the islands. About $300 one way. You’d only need a few thousand, but if you have a credit card, just load it up as most businesses take international cards and do tap n pay. Just carry a bit of cash for some that don’t. I always budget $100 spending per day, plus travel costs. Petrol is expensive here so you’d need a minimum $100 per day for that. You must remember All Blacks are the number 1 team they have been playing rugby for more than a century, from what I understand rugby is a very new sport to USA. Also look at other countries who were once lowly ranked a few years ago and now some are in the top ten in the world. Argentina is a great example.
