Great pod as usual Matt
Thanks a ton.
Well said. I'd say the Expos 2.0 would play on the road for 2-3 weeks to start the season then they'd come home for the season. I'm not sure about the extended stay in Florida.
If Rogers owns the Blue Jays and can use them for content on their channels, why can't Bell or Videotron do the same thing with the future Expos? Bell was part of the consortium in the 90s that wouldn't invest in the Expos when they were amazing and let them leave town. That company should be ashamed of itself. Now, it can afford to buy a franchise for Montreal on its own and use it the same way Rogers uses the Jays in Toronto. If not, then Videotron can do it. Toronto has to deal with the Canadian dollar and they seem to be able to work things out. I don't see why Montreal can't do it as well. If there is someone in a high up position in Bell or Videotron that's reading my comment (which i doubt), what the heck are you waiting for? A hundred and sixty two games of content will make you a ton of money. There are companies in the city and in Toronto, New York and Boston for that matter that can make this work. The fans in all those cities would be really happy to have a rivalry with Montreal. Toronto alone has big companies that would love to invest in Montreal. As for not wanting half a team, the problem is not that I wouldn't go to 81 games in Montreal. The problem is that I don't feel like cheering for a Florida team the other half of the year. Montreal is a big league city, not a city for half a team. After growing up with a MLB team in Montreal, having half a team seems like an insult. I'm not insulting you though, Matthew. The explanation that you gave clarifies the situation in Montreal. Now, Bell or Videotron, are you finally going to be good corporate citizens and do what's right for the city of Montreal or are you just going to sit on your asses doing nothing. C'mon, let's go already. Chop chop.

I work for a competitor of bell. Its just a matter of time before i lose my job. I am just waiting on a package. I dont know whats worse losing my job or the pending doom
I'm sorry man.
All baseball fans living in Montreal that are able, should just move to Toronto or heck, even DC. Obviously MLB will not be back anytime soon in Montreal-- the city is boring and lifeless for the average sports fan. Matthew I respect your dedication to bringing MLB back to Montreal but the Montreal citizens & sports media (hint: RDS) who once turned their backs on the Expos, do not deserve it tbh.
This was the dumbest idea I've ever heard. What makes it worse is that all of you folks who thought that this was a great idea, failed to understand that the players union would have voted this down. It was never going to happen in a million years.
Not happening.
106,102 came to see the Red Sox play the Jays in 2 exhibition games, 96,545 against the Reds, 96,000 for the Mets. Had the SCAM-demic not hit, the games against the Yankees would have drawn even more. Even the 50,000 that showed up for the 2 games against Pirates are better numbers than the Rays are pulling in now. Olympic Stadium was never a deterrent as to whether I went to see a game from Albany, NY, it actually was an advantage since I knew there'd be no rain-outs and a quick ride on the Metro got me to the game. But because MLB and everyone else involved is demanding a new downtown stadium, that's the "Elephant in the room"!
I have no doubt that attendance would be good, just thinking of some friends and I that would be there many games a year!
Absolutely.
Theory doesn't make sense. With the split market increasing attendance and dual tv rights - the Ex-Ray would have become a "have" team and a contributor to revenue sharing, not a beneficiary. Moreover, with Sternberg selling a portion of the team, despite not generating money for other owners with an expansion fee, he would have been raising the price ceiling on the value of the team and consequently all teams and raising the price of the expansion fee. Team owners aren't interested in the operational profit of the teams they own, its all about the asset value. The economics of a full time team in Montreal isn't an issue either: we are a WAY bigger market than half the teams, there is still land in the bonaventure bassin or technoparc. The problem is that nobody from outside Montreal is willing to invest here because of the uniqueness of the market (and history) and the local elite actually don't have anywhere near enough money combined. Bronfman family is shell of itself, burned by sex scandals, Bell is run out of Toronto and not family run like Rogers, Alain Bouchard has no liquidity or he'd lose control of CoucheTard and the rest and just super rich not uber rich like the other team owners. The Rogers family net worth is nearly double the the Expos consortium combined.
Great to hear from you on RUclips, Matthew!
Thanks for the support
I think it has to do with the last cba. The owners kiboshed it because it was something else they didn't want on the table. Everything was a go the summer prior, but when the lockout happened, that was it. If the lockout didn't happen, I think there would've been mlb in Montreal last year
I think Peladeau brings a lot to the CFL. I think he can bring in a CFL team in Quebec City through his business connections to create a provincial rivalry. But remember Peladeau owns the team, not Quebecor, I don't think you will see Videotron ads on TSN/RDS telecasts of CFL games.. The CFL should assist Peladeau by providing football content on his TVA network by creating an arena football league since he can't televise games of the team he owes. The proposed arean league would be playing in a hub setting in his Videotron Centre in Quebec City until the TSN broadcast right expire in 2025. This arena league would be a development league for the CFL while creating tv content for TVA. A win- win situation
I think you absolutely will see Videotron and TVA Sports stuff all over.
I am still a firm believer that for the short term, Montreal will very likely not get a team. However, for the long term, Tampa still needs to replace the trop by 2028 or they will have to relocate. Plus, have you been paying attention to oakland? If vegas can’t a deal done, odds makers put Montreal as the most likely location to land the team after vegas.
Merci Matthew pour ce compte-rendu. I went from the totally pessimist when former Expo Warren Cromartie arrived in 2011 with his project to bring a MLB team back. To the "young baseball fan at heart", pumped up when I was reading Rays' fans being convinced their team would end up in Montréal, less than 2 years ago. (fall of 2021) And that even if I expected MLBPA to crush the sister-city project. I really thought that those influencial owners would let Stuart Stenberg try that project for at least 1-2 seasons. To see if the Rays could this way cost them less in revenue sharing. Before the MLBPA would step in and veto against and force Sternberg to fully stay in Tampa or fully relocate in Montréal. Yes, I was finally convinced at the end of 2021 and early 2022. I finally agreed with former mayor Coderre when he said 4-5 years earlier : "It's not a question of IF but WHEN." And after all, the powerful Yankees were supposed to come play those 2 games against the Blue Jays in March of 2020, that was another positive sign. I was still concerned about the chances of a MLB team to survive in Montréal on the long run this second time around. But I never expected the project to totally end up this way, as it did at the end of January of 2022. Honestly, I'm still in the mourning process, writing this in March of 2023. Still a little surprised we won't even get those 2 Jays games at the end of the month. (The Jays will finish their pre-season schedule with 2 games against the Phillies. That would have been interesting, even with Bryce Harper still on the injury's list.) And watching all those people wearing Expos' caps in the streets, even at Montreal Canadiens' games, is not helping me in that mourning period! Because during the last 3-4 last Expos' seasons (2001-2004), you would barely se someone with an Expos' cap as soon as you would get a little far from Olympic Stadium. Now I see a few of those pretty much every time I go to downtown Montréal...in 2023. I understand that nostalgia sells. But I'm sure that the strength of that project to bring back a team also helped to boost that pride of showing the Expos' gear. Almost 20 years after the team officially left. So just for that, a big thanx to the Cromarties, Bronfmans, Coderres and Perry Gees of this world. With you Matthew at Exposnation. The Expos will most likely remain dead and buried. But at least, that name put a smile these days on much more professionnal sports fans across the province of Québec.
Thanks for watching and for your passion.
Question, why would Montrealers support Major League Baseball? The league, along with Bud Selig, John Henry and Loria went out of their way to remove the team for their profit. All other owners voted to get rid of the Expos. In the 1979s up until the relocation. The Toronto Blue Jays prevented all but 6 Nationally televised games per year. The Commissioners all backed Toronto. Now years later, Montreal is used as leverage for potential expamsion, relocation and publicly funded stadiums. The cost of Montreal receiving a team is either through expansion or relocation 1) Expansion costs, expansion fee is now minimum 2 billion dollars ( US), plus new stadium 1 billion(US) , team line up minimum 60 million a year What is average cost to attend a game? To recap MLB removes thecteam, 20 years later Montreal spends over 3 billion US to get the team back? Non merci, suivant, next
It's clear the MLBPA wanted nothing to do with this idea. It's a pain in the ass for the players involved with extra costs and family disruption. The project officially died when they signed the last CBA and I bet the MLB had to get rid of it to get the deal done.
The PA doesn't have that much power to stop something like that. Nor would it bother them that much. It was posturing to get more of a stipend for the players of that split city team.
tbh, I never could bring myself to like the Jays after the Expos left. I was already watching Pedro's success with Boston and stayed a Boston fan after 2004. Part of me still thinks the Jays have a lot more to do with the Expos leaving than we might know/think.
Montreal is a welfare state run by French Nazis and unfortunately is no longer a Major League city. Enjoy your Lacrosse and minor league Basketball teams.
Why wouldn't Bell have considered being part of an ownership group (if not the majority owners) for Montreal, using the Rogers model of having built-in content on TSN and RDS?
Who said they weren't? They actually were. But they just didn't want to lead the effort.
Im pretty sure Toronto owners took a dump on it
Absolutely. They see their national TV numbers and want no part of dividing the national market with another Canadian team.
❤
Good luck and can't wait
Really looking forward to this. Love the cap
Thanks!
