In A Flash: How One Player Bested Magic's Most Ridiculous Tournament
Flash Hulk is a combo that strikes fear into the hearts of Magic players everywhere. Banned or restricted is just about every format it was playable in including Legacy, Vintage, Commander and cEDH this instant speed two card combo could threaten to win as early as turn two and in some versions of the build could even win in your OPPONENTS upkeep when pushed to its limit.
This is the story of the event that started it all and when young MTG pro Steve Sadin is given an offer he can't refuse to play in a Legacy event despite never having seen the deck before he just jams one of the most broken decks in the format's existence as the format has been sent into upheaval only a few weeks prior.

The Chalice Play That Broke an MTG Pro
Просмотров 136 тыс.2 месяца назад
This innocuous little artifact is one of the most powerful piece of cardboard ever printed. Welcome to a brief history of Chalice of the Void. Chalice changed the foundations of how Magic was played and thought about, particularly as the formats got older and filled with more powerful cards. Chalice has been a player in just about every format it's legal in and even ended up being restricted in...
Revisiting An Instant Classic: Nassif vs Chapin

In 2007, two incredible Magic players played a mirror match at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship. But what happens throughout the course of the series is so incredible and so unlikely that it has to be seen to be believed. Patrick Chapin and Gabriel Nassif are vying for a shot at becoming World Champion and both of them have had a hand in reviving an archetype that everyone thought wa...

Yeah this Pro Tour had it all, San Diego 2007 is one of the most unique events Magic that's ever been held and t...
The Surprising Genius of the Worst Deck to Win a Pro Tour
Просмотров 794 тыс.4 месяца назад
What's the worst deck to ever win a Pro Tour? While I'm pretty sure it's still this one I think Magic Pro Tour Legend Olle Rade doesn't get nearly enough credit for how innovative his deck really was. While sure, it's an absolute pile that no one would be caught with in 2024 back in 1996 for how much Olle was doing wrong there's a lot right about this deck. At the heart of the first win of one ...
Can you build Hugs, Grisly Guardian in Commander using only lands?
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Bloomburrow spoiler season is in FULL swing so I might be a bit behind on legends at this point but Hugs, Grisly Guardian was technically the 5th overall one spoiled from the set. When I saw this Commander I recognized how mana-intensive but powerful the ability was so I set myself the challenge of trying to jam as many lands as I could into this deck. The result is a super fun, Valakut fueled ...
The Worst Pro Tour Top 8 of All Time

You thought Nadu was bad? I have a Pro Tour Top 8 that's at least in contention if not the worst of all time. 2024 Magic has nothing on the 2000s and its less refined rules of the era. Turns out Pro Tour Rebels was pretty aptly named and Lin-Sivvi is remembered as the terror of Block Constructed for a reason. Turns out that legend design was something that took awhile to get to the same point w...

is this really such a crazy play? opening hand has 2 chalice the obvious target mana costs for blocking affinity are 0 and 1... I feel like this is just the play you should make and not some crazy Nassif brain play.... Nassif is an amazing player but this doesn't feel to me like such an amazing play. I would argue this is more a stark misplay than a nassif smart play

Man, you lost me like 10 times during this short video. You only briefly mentioned what the problem was and you kept jumping from one tournament to the next, to yet another one mentioning like 10 different things as you went. That might be fine for people already proficient in MtG but for newbies like me it was impossible to follow or understand what you were talking about. In videos like these I expect explanation of the issues being discussed in simple terms so that everyone can follow.

Blue got so much love in the early days of Magic. Blue has always been over powered. I'm glad the other colors have finally caught up power wise. I'm just salty and hate blue because they don't let you do anything and WOTC was really bad about making card to directly beat it.

Also I have to say that the PTQ where Jace/Gideon bird deck dominated is EASILY the worst ptq of all time, worst era of magic the gathering of all time (added infect introduction helped solidify that) and the only time where I wanted to flip the table and demand a refund it had something like a 78% winrate and the ONLY reason it wasnt as "popular" as other decks in the ptq is because the deck cost 100s of dollars and most players didnt want to or couldnt drop 400 bucks on a deck, even the prize for 1st place in the ptq was worth less than the cost of the deck if I remember rightly 100% pay to win deck, the most disgusting time in MTG history, hundreds of thousands of loyal players who had spent thousands on their collection over the years stopped playing the game altogether because of it wizards did absolutely jack sht to resolve it there was no fun whatsoever playing against it, if you didnt use gideon and jace you were playing gray ogres against replenish there was even a broken mechanic in the set, infect, that outraged many people because of the inability to remove poison counters, but this deck even with the perfect starting hand would stand no chance against the planeswalkers the other deck aside from janky precursor golem control was mono red koth which was very strong but again looked like a starter deck when facing jace gideon birds Lin Sivvi was so much friendlier

  • @cattycats4
    @cattycats4 4 дня назад

the legend rule where both copies would die was perfect, when they changed it to what it is nowadays it basically enabled people to use planeswalkers again and again on the same turn ruining the "drawback" of the legendary tag being able to remove a powerful legend from the board by casting its duplicate was a great dynamic, it gave the legendary tag an actual drawback as well as an extra use mercadian masques is when I discovered MTG and it was when the game was still nicely balanced concerning creatures, it was very accessible to learn and play and want to discover the rest of the MTG cardpool of past sets and future ones todays powercreeped version is utter garbage compared like a flash game that had been sold out to the chinese market

I can understand why you wouldn't want to say the Goblin player is Owen Turtenwald by name. I have no idea how you can tell this story without, at minimum, actually saying the Goblin player is any of a Hall of Famer, 2x Player of the Year, 5 PT Top 8, and 5 GP wins. It takes a lot away from what Sadin accomplished. Owen did some henious shit, but even WotC hasn't removed his accomplishment from the record books.

    • @HungryOnPlane

I'd say that both: a) Said heinous stuff was enough of a reason to leave him out. b) At THIS time in particular it IS impressive because he's a well-known Legacy specialist doing very well at this wild Legacy event but that alone didn't feel compelling enough to include him based on the first point. Always a judgement/creative call with stuff like this but for this video at least it didn't feel worth the trade off.

I love that philosophy of his sideboard, transforming from a scary combo deck into an okay tempo deck. If this situation were a fantasy medieval dual it's literally just: 1. Begin casting powerful spell 2. Enemy, who expected your powerful spell, begins casting powerful counterspell 3. Stop casting spell, grab sword 4. Stab stupid enemy for casting powerful spell.

Flash was uber broken and someone that had never even played the deck was even able to win with it. Yeah for some reason I thought the flash hulk combo line was kiki target karmic guide, sack karmic guide in response to kiki targeting guide too. Haven't played magic for quite a few years though so I forgot the ability could be countered for lack of a legal target on resolution. Body snatcher was there just in case you drew guide and/or kiki so it was the best insurance, even better than running 2 copies of guide and kiki since you could draw both copies of one hypothetically and they're straight bricks. Amusingly both being 5 cost could matter for countertop to stop a force of will from the opponent. I was shocked when I learned about gp flash though and most legacy players wrote to WotC begging them to ban flash after they removed the powerlevel errata on it since it is a truly stupid card. 1U, win the game not very balanced. They couldn't even run the future sight pact cards in the tournament to have more free countermagic to back up the combo and zero mana protean hulk tutors that could also be fetched with mystical tutor. Glad they got rid of powerlevel errata since it was dumb to do with stuff like time vault going through so many iterations before they just said eff it, skip a turn to untap it and you can untap it with voltaic key or anything else that untaps artifacts. Flash with powerlevel errata was unplayable trash since you got no enter the battlefield or die triggers/another card in the bulk bin to be forgotten if the errata wasn't removed.
