Delivering spontaneous lectures on pop culture isn't publicly accepted in most places, so now I do it on RUclips.
It's a Vlog #1: A Vlog? / Accordion FAQ
I'm trying to find some shorter things to post in between my long videos so I don't lose my mind and burn out working on large-scale projects, and ya'll wanted to see vlogs. So put this in your pipe and smoke it.
In this first installment, I ramble on for over twenty minutes about the accordion, chaotic cosplay, and the importance of trying new things. It's like Sesame Street, except nothing at all like that.
Give me vlog ideas, I have a lot of weird hobbies, interests, and experiences that I'd love to talk about!

The Weird Al Show: An Unnecessarily Deep Dive into a Forgotten Cult Classic - Video Essay
Просмотров 23 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Hey folks, and welcome to my first-ever video! I appreciate you stopping by! It seemed only fitting that my first video be the best representation of what you'll be seeing from me: retro media history, pop culture analysis, and a whole lot of Weird. Come along as we learn a whole lot of useless facts about a show no one remembers, while I try my best to focus on the camera. A CORRECTION: 20:47 ...
HI ABBY♡
@@DarxFairi HELLO
Very well-ly done! I don't know that I'll be sticking around, not too interested in this kind of thing normally, Weird Al is an obvious exception!
Learned a lot as a E6 fan and appreciate the tons of work you put into this video :)
Thanks again for another great episode, Abby! I really enjoyed learning about the accordion and your journey with it so far. Your cover of "You Don't Love Me Anymore" was such a nice listen, warts and all. I also wanted to say thank you for your honest thoughts on the need to do what we do for the passion of it, and to find joy in the process. That part really spoke to me, and I just know it's gonna help some people get out there and give it a go. You and this channel are pure magic, and I'd just like to thank you again for sharing that with all of us out here in RUclips Land. Have a great one, and I'm looking forward to the next one! P.S. To answer your "For the Algorithm" question, I'm learning puppetry. it's something I've enjoyed for awhile now, and the passion's there to learn more.
@@muttrogers6586 Aww, thanks. Puppetry is an awesome one!! I love puppets and I think it’s an art form that doesn’t get the respect it deserves.
@@enter_the_phantom I agree! Puppetry's so much fun, it's an extremely accessible art form, and there's so many ways to approach it. I love it when I see someone light up when they realize they've just brought a paper bag, their hand, or an old shoe to life.
Been an Electric Six fan for a long time.
Get into Bugs by Pearl Jam. It's a B flat accordion song I've been a musician basically my whole life and it's always awesome every time I see anyone get into an instrument, or anything music related, basically. It allows you to be able to do a little reverse engineering into how music actually works. I hit a wall with my instrument abilities long ago so I got into sound engineering, which is what I make my own videos about, but it's still great to pick up an instrument, even if it's just to see what new sounds I can make with the same part over and over. It's great that you're sticking with it and still have motivation to do it after a year!
Trust me, you don’t want me to attempt anything that uses the B flat on this particular instrument lmao. It sounds like it’s dying Yes to the reverse engineering, it’s like solving a puzzle!
I rarely watch such long videos on RUclips (I'm old), but I couldn't resist with that one. I remember when I saw the video for DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE! for the first time. It was late at night during a more alternative music centric show on the German music channel Viva. Turned out my best friend also saw it that night and the next day we had a "Duuuuude, I saw something awesome yesterday!" moment. Oddly enough that happened again when the clip for GAY BAR aired later. Still, I didn't buy FIRE until around 2005, when I randomly found it while browsing the shelves and thought "Hey, I remember them." I played the shit out of that CD and was super hyped for the release of SENOR SMOKE, but...apparently nobody talked about it. Turned out it wasn't released here in Germany until who knows when. In 2006 I was on vacation in Canada and one of my top spots on my to do list was "Look for SENOR SMOKE". Thankfully the very first small town music store had it. I was shocked to hear that critics hated it, because to me, it was at least as good as, maybe even better than FIRE. I've been a fan of the band ever since. Sadly for financial reasons not as hardcore as I wanted to (I would've loved to participate in all the Kickstarters), but for example I own all their studio albums on CD. The first time I saw them live was in Cologne in 2009 during the Jägermeister Rock Liga Tour, in which every evening three bands competed against each other until one of them won. The other two bands that night were Friska Viljor and one from Germany that I had never heard from again. Oddly enough, although most people seemed to be there E6, they didn't win that night. (Who got the loudest applause won and in that case it was Frisky Viljor.) I don't even think they won the tour. What annoys me to this day is that I didn't have enough money that night to buy SEXY TRASH from the merch table. Sadly (?) E6 fans are very loyal and it's extremely difficult to find any of their self-released albums on eBay or Discogs. BTW, one thing that Dick did apparently on every single concert was telling the crowd that they were recording a live album and they were all gonna be on it, but obviously they didn't actually do that until years later. Also during one guitar solo he pulled out some money out of his pocket and just started to count it, then did some push ups during another song. Next time I saw them life was in 2016 in Bochum. After the show Dick was hanging out at the merch table, talking to fans, taking photos and signing stuff. He is a really cool dude. I got my HUMAN ZOO album signed and also caught a guitar pick that night. Mine "just" had the E6 logo on it though. And yeah, the crowd was great! It's incredible how wild, yet polite and nice everybody was. During one song some dude in the first row pretended to give Dick a BJ and the whole audience started laughing, then Dick just bumped the guy (softly) on the head with his microphone and said: "Goofball". I wish they would be in my area more often, but they haven't even been in Germany in a while. BTW, I also was in the chat during their livestream concerts, so maybe we "met" a long time ago! The downloads of their concerts are still on one of my harddrives, so if nobody else sent the ones you have lost your way yet, send me a message! As long as they keep touring, I honestly doubt that TURQUOISE is gonna be their last album, but it would be a miracle if they go back to their "one album a year" schedule. Anyway, my point is: Great video! It's always nice to hear from fans of this incredibly underrated band who try to spread the gospel. Have a great day!
@@Psychofrakulator I read this whole comment and it made me so happy! They’re such a special band and I love hearing other peoples’ memories of them, especially from other parts of the world. It’s so cool that people in such vastly different places can have these shared memories and experiences. I’d love the livestream shows if you have them! I still have Live from Quarantine but the others were lost when that ancient laptop finally quit on me.
I have, in fact, heard of Electric Six, and they are pretty cool, you're right! :) now everybody down at McDonnelzz!
I love this band, they are just under Ween as one of my favourites!
that accordion is a really beautiful looking thing, very well put about the learning stuff too
"How do you end a vlog?" Could be your sign off. Then do something different each time. Future vlogs ideas: Cooking with Abby, 2024 a retrospective, Your editing process, Gardening with Abby, A deep dive into deep diving, Abby with Abby (A deeper dive). I learnt to do coin tricks a few years ago so I will try and practice the 3 fly before for your next vlog.
@@kennocha1598 I love that. All of these ideas are fantastic, I especially love Gardening bc I’m horribly allergic to pollen and I have a sun allergy, so it’ll just be me in my barren front yard sneezing repeatedly before passing out

@@vaniladragon thank god bc Sev stinks
I would love to learn to play accordion, just never took the plunge to buy one or had the spare cash 😅 Can definitely relate though, i taught myself guitar at 18, and I'm definitely still not a good guitar player now at 35 but it's so satisfying to be able to pick it up and make music and know that I'm constantly learning and improving every time i do.
@@talesfromiDEATH That’s awesome! I’m in awe of guitar players because I do not have that attention span or dexterity lmao
are you planning to go to any of windows95man's shows in america??
@@TuongNguyen-qv6im I desperately want to and I’m heartbroken I’m not able to. America is HUGE and he’s not performing anywhere near me.
1. The filming nook looks good. 2. Count me among the masses who are sad that you're retiring Raven. We can't allow My Immortal to slip from the public conscious! 3. Unlike the majority, I have an ACOUSTIC guitar that I am unable to play, but thanks to your very encouraging words I think I'll be taking it out of its case when I have some free time. 4. I was able to recognize "You Don't Love Me Anymore" immediately, so you're doing really well. 5. Thrusting a live animal at one's camera is objectively the best way to end a vlog.
@@shauno5888 1. Thank you! It’s comfy! 2. I’ll bring her back at some point, I want to do TikToks with my cosplays eventually and she’s one of my favorites. 3. Yay!! You’ll do great! 4. Thank you! 5. Sev is an attention seeker and agrees
Wish i could turn these subtitles off :c in the meantime i've taped a piece of paper over the lower third of my phone screen
@@gecafe Sorry! We like accessibility around here and RUclips’s subtitle system is a nightmare to work with. Still experimenting with subs and these were a little big lol
@ i didn't know yt's subtitle thing was so hard. Assumed it was a simple text file. Of course google has to make it harder than it needs to be...
as a fellow musician, your enthusiasm for your accordion(s) is heartwarming and you played with passion and that is always more inspiring than being perfect. I could feel these notes. never get rid of your first. you will only regret it later. ps - I am playing guitar and experimenting while typing all this.
@@riffsnoleads Aww thank you! It’s just fun to play! I was planning on selling my current to help pay for the new one but I don’t know that I can part with it just yet. ❤️
24:55 what in god’s name is the theme music doing there. What is going on. Why is everything on this channel so unbelievably cursed
25:09 10 out of 10 no notes
I just checked this timestamp and OH GOD WHAT IS THAT NOISE WHAT DO I HAVE TO EDIT NOW
They’re very popular actually in communities on the Mexican border (I’ve spent time in the Tucson area as well as three decades in the San Diego area) as accordion is an essential instrument in Norten^o music….Also prevalent in parts of the South where Zydeco is prevalent……oh, and I’ve also been a fanatical Weird Al fan since even before he broke through with RICKY in 1983 (I had a friend in summer camp in 1982 who’d always play his cassette tapes of stuff he’d record off of Dr Demento and this is where I first heard YODA and ANOTHER ONE RIDES THE BUS in 1981)…seen him in concert five different times, starting in 1986 when I saw him open for THE MONKEES, of all groups (it was a great concert…In 2016 I paid $260 for a VIP meet and greet with him on the Mandatory Fun tour and he was Genuinely amused by this!)
@@edvaira6891 I’m meeting the man himself in August, too! First Al concert, couldn’t be more excited (and ridiculously nervous). It’s weird, I’m from the South and we have a lot of Mexican and German influences in my area, you’d think it would be more common than it seems to be around here in the place I’m from. We have such a rich and diverse musical culture in Texas, but everyday folks are just weirdly amused by this thing and it’s impossible to find a place that sells them, let alone repairs/tuning and lessons. It’s annoying and baffling.
Hey Abby! No time to watch now, gonna watch over the weekend. But I hope you're feeling a bit better!

loved dinotopia as a kid and i've always felt like it was a shame that its mostly been forgotten in pop culture, so i'm glad somebody's finally talking about it. also, i'm a musician and play guitar and piano, but the couple times in my life that i've picked up an accordion it seemed too complicated for me (it doesn't help that i'm left handed so i can either do the keys with my dumb hand or play upside down) so kudos to you for sticking to it and managing to do something musical with it
@@alexharbin4124 I’m excited to talk about Dinotopia. Afraid it’ll be a bit of a wait, I’m still in the research phase and I’m reading *all* the books so I’ve got a mountain ahead of me lol
I like the new filming area. It looks comfy & fun!
Also, I am stupid excited about Dinotopia
@@MrDaveUsesWords It’s a lot more comfortable than sitting on the floor, that’s for sure
"John R Dequindre" is a Metro Detroit reference. John R Road and Dequindre Road both run parallel to each other about a mile apart in Oakland county
Thank you so much for making this video! It was amazing to learn so much about a band that is so important to me. Danger danger and gay bar are my earliest memories of music as well as Dick Valentines audiobook series being my favourite bit of lockdown as me and my dad listened to them together. So many in jokes between us have come from Chinatown reach around and the Glendale glory hole, there’s been many a time I’ve tried my hardest through laughter to describe the plot of them to others. I’m so happy to learn all this knowledge about the best worst band in the world
I, too, love Weird Al. Which is what dragged me here. As an Alfred Matthew Yankovic die-hard fan, i love this video. You did a great job explaining who Al is. Surprisingly, none of my friends know who he is, so, i will be using this as an explanation.
OHH my algorithm finally got me. I haven't heard Electric Six for years! Such a great reminder and a great video
E6 at the Double Door was a timeless tradition
Hey, really appreciate the video! I've been an E6 fan for a good while now, welcome! I actually got a digital copy of Electric Sixmas as I contributed to the kickstarter. If you would like a copy, we arrange this. Cheers,
@@arnolddowney9807 I love how many people have offered this to me, this fandom is the best. I got it a few weeks ago from someone and I was right, it is the greatest Christmas album of all time!
Fantastic video. I once read a description years ago of their style as “garage disco punk,” which is the best I’ve come across. It’s often an existential mockery of glitzy consumerism typically in a manic hyperactive and unfocused manner. The styles are so opposed that finding a center is the other side of a black hole. Also they’re just plain great.
My favorite live action kids TV shows that used to come on regular TV or 1. Richard Pryor's place 2. Pee-wee's playhouse 3. Beakman's world 4. Bill Nye the science Guy 5. Where in the world is Carmen sandiego the game show
literally bought their album at a clearance in aberdeen last year unfortunately the cd was involved in an Incident the day i got home
Never heard? They were EVERYWHERE at one point.
Awesome video! I love the editing style a lot.The Weird AL Show is also avaliable on RUclips for free with ads, which is how I watched some episodes. I found out about the show from someone's video looping the intro every time a word repeats, which got popular from someone doing it with the fan-made Albuquerque animation.
Weird. First heard about them around 2017. Thought they were a new band 😂
Dick, at least five times during a show in Baltimore: "My drummer is from Annapolis. No secrets between sailors."
a Highly underrated band , I have seen them a few times including their first time in Newcastle Upon Tyne ,still need to buy their last few albums. I always wondered what Hartlepool did to get a mention in unnatural beauty.
I cannot say the word voltage without the extra syllable because of them
That's how I feel about the word "devil".
