Uncultured Purls
Добавлен 9 авг 2013
I'm a weirdo from Richmond, Virginia who loves to knit and crochet. My crafting isn't perfect (in fact, nothing about me is perfect). But if you want to hang out and talk about yarn, please stick around! I'm also into books and craft beer, which may make an appearance on the channel. Variety is the spice of life, as the saying goes!

Uncultured Purls Episode 1: My Twists and Turns Shawl
Love to knit and crochet. Carpal tunnel gave me trouble. So diamond painting is my new place of peace.
I was thinking a half and half triangle wrap before you even said it. I’m on my third and love the process as much as the product.
Don't do it you will get hooked 😅😅😅😅😅 I love it I have done lots of diamond paintings from pics I have took and they have turned out amazing just on the finishing line of a pic I took in Denmark ..
Superb watch! I’ve been eating and crocheting for 30+ years and picked up diamond painting in June of this year and I am loving it. There are lots of tips and tricks that I’m sure you have learned by now and I hope you’re still having fun with it look forward to watching more of your channel.
Hello Lucy. I've been thinking about you as I work on Clue 1 of this year's MKAL. I was wondering if you decided to do it or not. It seems like you already have enough on your plate. The sweater you made for your neice is cute. My neice would say "barf" on the color- she hates green. But I like it. If you're not enjoying the herringbone project, rip it out and do something else. Our crafts are supposed to be fun and relaxing, not stressful. I've watched the movie Into The Wild several times, but I've never read the book. I'm sure it's better than the movie, as most books are.
I watched the movie many many years ago! After I finish the book, I’ll have to watch it again and compare. Have fun doing the MKAL!
Beautiful! Great job. Love it 🧶🤗💖 Good luck with that herringbone stitch blanket. I would probably give it up & look for something easier. I am with you. Love the cowl!
You’re so fun to watch! I’m a knitter/crocheter/water colorist and I’ve recently discovered diamond painting. My crafting adhd strikes again. Thanks so much for sharing.
I just found your channel and love your Penguono! Really, lovely colors!
Stunning sweater, Lucy! You deserve a round of applause!!!
Consider me one of the 5 who were eager to see the finished penguono. It fits you great, and is truly ooak. Seeing it made me realize that Stephen's mkal is right around the corner. I think I'm going to give it a go this year. I'm diggin' your short hair. It makes you look younger. I love the color of your hat, but that pattern bored me to tears. I gave up and frogged it out. I have a neice who just turned 5 in June. When I'm at her house and I pull out my wip, she gets a pencil or a marker and asks to help me "do my yarn". She's so cute. I told her as soon as she learns to read, I'll teach her how to crochet. That's when my grandma taught me. Crochet first, then knitting a couple years later. But my neice is a lefty, and I'm not, so it's going to be a challenge. I love the wild violet yarn. I'm holding off on buying any more yarn until the mkal. I have a few wips I really need to get working on.
Awww your niece sounds so cute! Mine wants to learn too. I think you’re right about crochet being a better place to start. Thankfully, my niece is a righty! Have fun with the MKAL! I haven’t decided yet if I’ll do it. I probably will. It’s hard to resist. 😁
Your Penguono is epic! I like the more fitted look you chose. Which size did you make?
Thanks! I made the small. I’m pretty sure I used size US 3 (3.25mm) needles. I should have written that down so I would remember 😭
@@unculturedpurls Thank you!
I haven't had covid or any cold in 4 years, knock on wood. Lol I'm sure I will get something soon. Hope not though! Great podcast, thanks for the update! I need to finish my pengouno Ugh! Lol
Four years with no colds is highly impressive!
I did it!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 and i danced to your video music. It was perfect😂😂😂
I used to draw, do adult coloring books, and crochet, but since I was introduced to diamond painting back in, I believe 2020, I was hooked. My first one was a horse, while my twin sister got the fox. Now, my twin sister is one of those who don't have the patience for it, so I remembered doing hers after I finished my first one. And it went on from there. The funny thing about diamond art is that once you start, if you have the patience for doing them, you aren't going to stop; it's addicting. One of my aunt's sons is doing one, to my knowledge, and he said it's addicting. I did give a few finished diamond art paintings away, with one of them being a wine diamond art painting for my aunt's birthday as a gift. And my mom requested me to do a baby fox for my aunt's daughter gender reveal party or the baby shower, I forgot which one, and her theme is baby woodlands creatures. So I can't wait to do that one and see the look on her and her husband's faces when they get it.
Great to see you again. Missed seeing your podcast. Glad your back to share your projects. I'm currently working on my first sweater. Making good progress and almost to the point of seaming. It has given the motivation to keep going with this endeavor of sweater making. It's been a fun process and that's what knitting is about for me. 😊
I like your sweater! It seems like it will be great in the fall for halloween!
Hi Lucy. I was thinking about you and hoping you are ok since we haven't heard from you in awhile.
Hi! I’m fine- just got busy with other things. Thanks for coming back and watching after my period of hibernation 😂
You’re so chill 😊 Love to see the tips and tricks you’re discovering as you go. I relate to so much of what you’re talking about.
So fun to see you discover things by just doing it instead of researching a bunch ahead of time like I did before starting in on the kit I bought. Also such a bold move to purchase two high-end expensive large kits for your first time doing it! I went cheap, small Amazon kit and it turned out great. Fun hobby!
Omg I’m so glad you mentioned the increase mistake on the Lumme. I just started the increase row and I was like what? Increase with the CC?! I think not. I went on a search to see if anyone else was puzzled by that and I’m glad I found you. Thanks!
I love knitting and crocheting too. I am also new to diamonds and art painting. I just finished my first one last week. It was a little thing from Amazon, but it was enough to make me fall in love with the craft. Now I have the next one started, 3 more kits that arrived yesterday, and 2 more I want to order tomorrow.💎♥️ For me, I definitely find it every bit as relaxing as knitting and crocheting. And it gives me that same feeling of satisfaction from watching something beautiful develop more and more under my hands .. But for me it takes more focus. Maybe it's because I'm new to it, but I can't watch TV at the same time. It takes my focus to make sure each dot is centered well and the right colour goes in the right place. But I definitely love it and as much as working with yarn.
Thank you for noticing that! I finished two rows with the pattern as written (CC1) and I just frogged it because I realized it must be a mistake! I searched online and found your video and appreciate the validation!
Love your Geogradient shawl, great job! Sweater looks great too! I would just thread some matching yarn to close up the little holes, the dark yarn also helps. I have issues with wrap turns on one side too.
Thank you! I’ll try closing up the holes and see how it looks.
So I only save one storage container worth of each color. The rest I make cute jars out of by mixing them all together and displaying on my bookshelf
Loved this video! So glad to have found your channel!
Keep going! The dip stitch is fun and it looks great. Your colors are fantastic. And your Clue 3 stitching is really good. So even, the V or (chevron-y) pattern really stands out in yours. My Clue 3 slipstitch pattern looks much less distinct - more like tree bark in my opinion : ) Have fun!
im on the second wing!
beautiful work love your colors.😊
I'm still on part 2 of last years Twist and Turns shall!😂
Hahaha that’s ok! 😂
I started diamond painting a couple months ago and I'm obsessed! Buckle up! Lol
I'm on section 11 of clue 3. I like it a lot but it's not going as fast as I expected. Also life and work keep interfering with my knitting time 😂 . Thank you for posting your progress, I like watching because I also don't have any knitting friends of family. Happy knitting!
Hey Lucy, wanted to thank you for the careful spoiler alerts. I'm still working on clue two and want to keep the surprise of clue three until I get there. I have used the " pick up floats method for weaving in end in my colorwork for years and never had a problem. Enjoy your videos!
I’m keeping up so far. I’m on the second section of clue 3.
Great job!
Your shawl is looking great! I just finished clue 2. Really enjoyed how relaxing of a knit it has been so far!
Hi Lucy: I too I am behind like you and still clue 2 Section 9 and forever wishing to catch up but I have limited knitting time. Always good fun. Onward
Your thoughts are just about where mine are on this whole situation. I didn’t really see the symbol but I thought, it’s just knitting, and this isn’t the hill I want to die on, so to speak. I’d rather start fresh with positivity

Hi Lucy: new to you and subscribed after hearing your take on the MKAL. Best take on the controversy I have encountered so far. The MKAL quitting adopted or entertained by some baffles me. Yes, let’s pivot. My square is at same stage as yours! Different colors. I purchased the PKU yellow gradient from S and P and it cost about same as yours + shipping. And Yes winding fancy yarn is stressful even with a swift and winder!!!
One lady put rows of yo’s in the stripes.
I’ve not yet tried any of his patterns. They are beautiful, but I have way too many sweaters, hats, and mittens to do.
Luckily I did not have my yarn before the original clue came out. I joined in with the redesign square, which I am loving! I too love to purl. Changed up the stripes a little, can't wait to see clue two.
Yes I agree don’t want to get foster just knit
I thought that you brought a positive and compassionate perspective to what is going on. I was on the fence as to participate this year due to time constraints but after watching Stephen’s new direction video, I am digging through my stash looking for yarn so that I can cast on in support of Stephen. Maybe a holiday inspired gradient because like you, I will be embracing my pace & probably won’t finish until Christmas. 🐢
The new clue also reminds me of a geode, which seems fitting given the name of the shawl. I've really appreciate the reaction he had to people's concerns and I'm excited about continuing on
I am stealing the colour combination for another project, it's perfect
Thank you for our positivity about this. I wish people wouldn’t be hurtful with their comments
I do understand where Stephen is coming from but it does make me sad that my modified clue 1 is not considered part of the MKAL bc I really do like how it is working up and have learned a lot of techniques. I feel like inclusion is touted but only if its the “correct” opinion. Like its all about love and inclusion but not if you decided to modify the original, then you’re excluded. It makes me a bit sad bc I really did love seeing everyone come together to create new versions (which people are still doing with the new one which is so cool) but yea….
Yeah, that part makes me sad as well. I’m sure your modification looks amazing! I guess Stephen wants to create a lot of distance between that original pattern and the final look of the MKAL.
I splurged on some luxurious merino/yak/silk blend yarn, which really didn't cost too much since I got it undyed then dyed the gradient myself. It felted a bit during the dye process, which caused tangling while winding. It was NOT ready by Thursday, which I'm glad for now, because I was hoping to start immediately. I see a pinwheel in the original pattern, but out of respect to Stephen and everyone who sees something else, I'm using the new pattern.
First time finding your podcast by doing a "Geogradient" search 💛, and so glad I did. You brought a very peaceful aspect to the past few days chaos and high emotions. This is my very first MKAL and my first SW pattern, so I was disheartened as the controversy became apparent and loud. Fortunately, I had not yet picked up my needles/yarn yet as I was planning to cast on Saturday, so I was able to sit back and be more of a spectator instead of emotionally and mentally invested. My concluded thoughts from past 4+ days is to also move forward respecting the designer and his good name, but I do empathize with those who had already moved forward with early alternate suggestions, modifying the original pattern to deflect from the unintended symbol, but not being able to share - my heart is torn between them and Stephen's wishes. I have not listened to SW latest podcast yet (New Directions) but intend to soon - and planning to officially cast on in next day or so, enjoying at my pace. Looking forward to hearing from you again soon 🧶🧶
Actually it is Columbus Day.
